Last night I watched the BTS from 'Collateral,' and Mann was on there bragging about the lights they used for the cab scenes...he said they were using material that they use in cell phones for backlights. Is this something that's made for the 'industry' or could a DIY'r make something similar?

You could make something similar maybe. I haven't seen the BTS for Collateral but,
it sounds like the diffuser film that Car3o is using for his adapter.

Diffuser...maybe that's it. Yeah, Mann was showing off the lights...the were like 4"x20" white sheets that they velcro'd to the ceiling of the cab, on the seats, etc.

Mikko, I think you're right...

I might have to give these a try and see what they can do for video. I know they don't radiate light like flo or element-based light, but for close-quarters they'd be perfect!

Were they EL sheets? Cool trick.

You can see some at www.ceelite.com (http://www.ceelite.com) They aren't very bright and they don't come in neutral white color but they are cheap and draw very little power.
