can anyone direct me into how I would go about making a white matte/bars to replace the current black bars in the wide screen mode?
Thanks!

You should be able to change the color directly in the filter... which filter are you using?

I used the widescreen filter is there another filter I can use, I'm using final cut hd 5.1.2
The Widescreen filter does let you change the color of the bars.

Can you point it out, the only thing I see is that it let's you change the border but not the acutal bar?

Hmmm... you are correct. Been a while since I was there... maybe it changed?
For now... you can create two white solids and move them up and down to mask the mask... else you can create a nice matte in Photoshop, but I don't know the exact numbers you'd need to create it.
Maybe there's another 3rd party filter that I used to use... I'll keep digging.
Sorry for the confusion on my part.

If you are using the widescreen filter just drop a sug under the video and use the "invert" filter (video filters->channel) to turn the slug white.
