Nice job, Nathan. Are you going to fill us in on what you did?

Besides the color correction, I'm guessing you blurred a layer... erased everything other than her skin... then played with opacity. Maybe some high-pass sharpening on the eyes/mouth, too? Whatever you did... it looks great. Her face even looks thinner for some reason.

Give us details! :)

Or you could put out a dvd tutorial and make a fortune... seriously it looks good. That girl has some real potential... if you're lucky she's more then a model. I could see some incredible shots coming from your cam + your skills + that girl.

I wouldn't call this an "extreme makeover" but never the less I will submit one of my recent headshots (pre and post tweek) for your viewing pleasure.

I did quite a bit to this picture, as you can probably see.

instead of trying to explain it all I just make "tips" out of some of the things I did here

1. make the background darker
< create a new layer.fill it with black. lower the opacity. with a soft eraser erase
the black on the subject. change the black layer to a "soft light" layer mode.

2. "use liquify"
> its under filters. screw around with this. you can make eyes bigger
hips smaller etc. you can usually drop 10 pounds off your subject

3. "Blur skin"
> only the skin. make the nose, eyes, lips and eye brows are not
blurred. we are talking only the the skin. not the features on the face.

4. "Scale it"
> under edit > transform you have the ability to screw with the size of
the picture (using SCALE), try garbing just a side of the picture and squeezing it together just a little bit. this will make the subject look a little thiner.

5. "red can be bad"
> the more i work with pics the more is see that red can give off a
amateur look. go to Image> adjustments > hue and saturation. on the
top of this window you will see the word "master" click on it. it will show
the names of a few colors. select red and turn down the Saturation about
15 or 20 percent

try some of these see what you think

thanks guys for the nice words

I'm impressed guys with your color corrections. Color Correction is a beast I really need to learn how to tackle. Its an art in itself...

Dug up this thread and thought I'd play around with it a little bit. Would love some comments on this:

Not so much comments on the CC (aside from getting rid of the blown out light I didn't do much CC), but really just some comments on the touch-ups on the model. I did some smoothing on her skin, liquefied her face and changed her eye color, among a few other things. Any thoughts, suggestions?

She looks completely different and loses all of her facial expression/features.

Not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing...

I agree, she does look very different; that was my intention. The question is: does she look better than before? I'm curious to hear what others think. If I totally botched this one, please let me know. Thanks a bunch.

it doesn't really seem portionable

she looks better but not the same person anymore. imo it looks like a totally seperate face was taken and inserted in her head. now her head looks smaller in proportion to her body.

You're right, the proportions are off. I'll see if that's fixable, and if I can do it I'll post some results.

You overprocessed her face with the blue. Make sure when you blur the skin to smooth it out that you don't go over the edges otherwise it won't look right.

Extremely blurry and looks alien now. Not an improvement over the original. It would need more work blending the photo as a whole.

Here's my take:

What do you guys think? I just started photoshop. Took me about 30 minutes.

Looking at it again I forgot to do a final sharpen on the right eye.

I changed her face with liquify, did a ton of color correcting to certain spots, made teeth brighter, whites of eyes brighter, changed eye color, smoothed skin, raised eyebrow.

I actually made her facial features look slightly Elisha Cuthbert-esque, IMO. Actually I think its just the eyebrow. Also face is slightly oversatured compared to the neck.
