i'm new to video editing but i am using FCP 5.1.2 and recorded some footage on my HVX200 in 720/24pn and when i imported it into FCP i am able to preview it at normal speed but when i drag it into the timeline there is an orange line over top of the timeline and it plays back slow. before i started to edit i went into easy setup and selected DVCPRO HD-24p. am i doing something wrong???

Your settings are off somewhere. Right click the "sequnce" in your browser> scroll down to "settings"> what does it say your editing timebase is??

it says it's in 29.97....how did this happen? i set it as 720p/24 in the easy setup before i started...how do i select what time base i want to work in? i've been used to editing SD from tape i'm not aware of this.

If you selected DVCPro 720p 24 as your Easy Setup then you should be fine. However, if you say opened your project, had an un-named Sequence 1 in it, and your previous settings were for 29.97, then Sequence 1 would be for 29.97. Even after applying the Easy Setup, only NEW sequences will take on the DVCPro preset, old ones would be unaffected. So try creating new sequences AFTER applying the Easy Setup.
Additionally, if for whatever reason that seems to be on the fritz, empty the sequence (no clips on it), then open up the Sequence properties/settings and it should give you a button that says Load Preset. Click on that button and you'll get the presets list infront of you. So at that point try selecting the DVCPro 720p 24 preset. Good luck.

after changing the timebase it still is making me render the file when i play it back...what's up with that? is there a major difference between a 24 timebase and a timebase of 23.98? it makes me render when using either one.

Same thing. Think of 29.97 for video. It is quite often refered to as 30 fps. Same deal here. 23.98 is often just refered to as 24 fps. So sounds like something else might be up. Now just simply changing the timebase yourself doesn't always do the trick I find. I often need to go back and use the Easy Setup or Load Sequence Preset. Simply manually adjusting it to what it should be, for the one value, I often find doesn't do the trick.
cheers.
