View Full Version : Film gear in real life

So I'd like to hear everyone's stories of where their filmmaking gear has helped them in some area of life totally outside of filmmaking (excluding the obvious non-filmmaking uses of cameras and computers). I've got two such stories, both involving my pregnant wife :-).

This summer it was really, really hot and we didn't have air conditioning and my wife wanted the small box fan to blow on her face all night. So...I got out a c-stand, mafer clamp and sand bag and gripped the box fan with the mafer and then using the c-stand positioned it so the fan perfectly kept her cool all night (suddenly the cost of that c-stand seemed much more reasonable to her).

My wife is now in the final stages of pregnancy and is finding it difficult to stand next to counters. Couple this with the fact that she's under 5'2" and it just makes things difficult. So I mentioned to her she could use my apple box set and brought it out to the living room for her. She now regularly picks from the full set as the need suits her (she uses the full apple in the kitchen and the 1/2 apple in the bathroom).

She now loves c-stands and apple box sets :-)

LOL! Great stories.

I presume Gaffer's tape doesn't count huh? I use that for everything.

Well, now, see, it's too late for the gaffer's tape. She's already pregnant.

I used some film stuff in real life once. Sorry, I can't talk about it.

This past summer I used a c-stand to hold a flag over the grill so I wouldn't get so hot while cooking up the burgers... but it just seemed like a normal thing to do (until other people saw the setup)!

I have a few t-shirts hanging from a c-stand in my office right now. When will normal people learn of the greatness that is the c-stand?

Rumour has it that C-47s can be used for attaching damp clothes to lines for drying them out... Amazing! Who would have thought?

Sometimes, when I go rock climbing, I use XLR cables when I run out of rope. I figure I increase my chances of someone hearing me if for some reason I have to call out for help.

The black wrap was closer than the aluminum foil so I used it to speed up the BBQing of some chicken.

Me bored on a Large set (i wish i still had the pictures) but i had a Applebox bench with room for 4 to sit, it was professional.
