Mark Harris

Yeah, good to see you back in action, Ted. We are in the final moments. Herman's given us a score, the sound design and mix are in the capable hands of Joe (conrad) Johnson, and we have a guy here working on some opening titles. We still have ADR tomorrow night, and Joe will get me the mix with that in it by Wed eve, then it's encoding and uploading! Right up to the wire.

TimurCivan
01-30-2007, 01:06 AM

Mark Harris
01-30-2007, 10:28 PM
well we did like three weeeks of Preproduction.

Yes I did. :)

Did Lindsey's and Godfrey's ADR tonight, and now am laying it in for Joe. Got the first sound mix and foley from Joe. Will send him some notes - many of which are: MAKE THAT GUNSHOT LOUDER!!! :)

But man, with Herman's music and the sound FX, it is soooo coming together. I am super excited.

Oh yeah, be sure to keep your eyes out for that very handsome fellow playing Casey. He's one to watch.

Mark Johnson
01-30-2007, 10:36 PM
friggin'-A, man.... love being in the trenches with everybody. Good luck with your sprint to the finish, Mark. ... Me, I'm gonna have another scotch and get back to fx.

I cant wait to hear the sound mix. ITs gonna be sooooo sweet. There is a reason why Mark is a director and i am not. He can orchestrate somethign liek this. He is a REAL director. His brilliance isnt just the writing, the acting, and the art of the film. He is VERY skilled in knowing where to find things we need, how to get them, and with whom to collaborate to get the piece finished(joe johnson, Herman, Peter, Monica etc.....), not only on time, but with maximum Efficiency and Quality.
I think people need to know that Although he and I collaborated in the past on Bloody Mary, and on this as partners, he really is the reason these films have that polished finished look. He wrangles everyone elses hard work into a beautiful, and coherent finihsed product.

Its an Honor to work with you man. Hopefully many more too.

Ted Arabian
01-31-2007, 07:49 AM
How is the last day going to be spent for you guys? Are you ready or are you scrambling?

Good luck! I seriously can't wait to see your film.

Mark Harris
01-31-2007, 08:00 AM
we are not scrambling, as this was the schedule we planned. Got the ADR all laid in last night and uploaded for Joe. He should be doing the last bits of the sound mix today. Also, I gave Peter instructions to please have the titles to me by about 5. So at about 5, I will put it all together, encode and upload. I've already tested the H.264 stuff from BM, so it should be fine.

Ted Arabian
01-31-2007, 08:10 AM
Sounds great, Mark! Lucky! (well, not "luck" as it sounds like you had a lot of great Pre-production here!)

Norm Sanders
02-01-2007, 02:46 AM
Wow, just read the write-up on your first page ... VERY informative, Timur, thanks!

While I think we've got a great story, I'm already in awe of the grabs I've seen here & imagine your film is absolutely going to rock! Looking forward to watching it very soon.

Mark Harris
02-01-2007, 02:53 AM
yeah Norm, if I ever get the damned thing encoded. Yeah, up all night...damned raw file was 53 gigs. Taking forEVER to get the QT done...

But thanks, we're very excited to show this to people.

Norm Sanders
02-01-2007, 03:40 AM
I feel your pain ... other than the fact that it's nearly 6am your time, and you're still up. It's pushing 3am here, and I'm calling it quits for a few so I can get some sleep.

Best to you on that encode ... I hate that trial & error process!

Mark Harris
02-01-2007, 03:50 AM
Yeah, I had the process down for SD, but HD is turning out to be a bigger beast than I thought, even though I'd done some tests and thought I had it...oh well...

Ted Arabian
02-01-2007, 06:10 AM
Hey Mark, you do seem to be the last pin standing! I think you win a prize or something for that!

I hope that you little green light turns off soon and you get some sleep!

Ted Arabian
02-01-2007, 08:07 AM
I see that your light is still green, Mark. Shut it down! Go to bed! You must be a zombie!

RomanJaquez
02-01-2007, 08:35 AM
Mark are you up yet?
These posts are addictive.... I can see how anyone can be up until 5:50 AM.

Ted Arabian
02-01-2007, 08:47 AM
Mark are you up yet?
HA HA! Mark hasn't gone to bed YET!

Mark Harris
02-01-2007, 09:30 AM
Okay, I got re-uploaded and caught a couple hours, and just moved the car for street cleaning.

but all that time up was worth it, because as soon ass screening begins, we will be announcing yet ANOTHER special treat for the viewers. And a different one than Timur was referring to yesterday.

Stay tuned.

There is still one line off - just like two words, but I think I fucked Joe up with a change to the cut that I'd forgotten about. But it's going into this contest that way. That's how you know we're keeping it real.

RomanJaquez
02-01-2007, 09:37 AM
Sweet! I am curious!

I wonder if I can re-upload; My file size was 26mb either that or 60mb... I couldn't nail an in between.

Anyways... how long did it take you to park? I know by experience is a pain in the #$$ and can take a loooonnnnG time to find a spot in NYC. At least in Manhattan.

Mark Harris
02-01-2007, 09:45 AM
nah, I just double park on my block during cleaning. Everyone does.

Ted Arabian
02-01-2007, 10:48 AM
Hey Mark, did I just read that your film is NC (non-competitive)?

Oh! And yea!!! I love surprises!!!

Mark Harris
02-01-2007, 11:21 AM
yeah, we decided not to worry about prizes and make a film that could not only go here but to other fests as well.

Ted Arabian
02-01-2007, 11:30 AM
Was it too much work to have two different cuts or do you just not like to work that way? (I know that I hate reproducing my work, though we will have 2 cuts of TTN.) And the prizes are worth a 6 minute cut! Not an HVX up on the block, but nice none the less!

Mark Harris
02-01-2007, 11:34 AM
there is no way in hell we could've had a 6 min cut. the movie is 13 min now and the script is cut to the bone. Cutting it to 6 min would have made it incomprehensible.

but when you see it, basically, this is the first 13 min of a Katrina feature. So that's what my real goal is, get some funding with this. Hopefully it will be interesting enough that people will want to see more.

We just have some different priorities. And not to put down the DVX Fests, but they are for peer review. I mean, I'm not going to go to Focus and brag about winning this fest. They would be like: Whaaaaaaa? So i think Jarred made the right decision to pull the prizes back to reality. The prize now is a nice perk, I think, but not something most of us would make a movie to get.

Anyway, I will just be thrilled to show everyone the film and see what people think, and especially on this site to show people what Timur got out of this camera. He really pushed it I think, and between him and Aram, I think the images we got are quite surprising for this camera.

Anyway, can't wait to start watching.

Ted Arabian
02-01-2007, 12:05 PM
I hear you.

Wow. I didn't realize that you had a 13 minute film... cut to the bone! Yes, that would be tough to put in a 6 min. cut.

Best to you. I am so stoked to see it. The grabs look so amazing. Flat out amazing.

TimurCivan
02-01-2007, 12:05 PM

there is no way in hell we could've had a 6 min cut. the movie is 13 min now and the script is cut to the bone. Cutting it to 6 min would have made it incomprehensible.

Yep, we learned that one the hard way with SPARROW ... trying to take a six minute cut out of a 23 minute film was just rediculous ... however, in hindsight, we could have cut the middle/main scene from the film, which really had a self contained story of its own, but didn't think about that until it was too late.

I must say, Mark & Timur ... I'm REALLY glad you guys are NC!! Your images just look too amazing to compete against.

TimurCivan
02-01-2007, 02:10 PM

Hey guys, since your film is NC, why are you submitting it in such a small resolution? Forget file size, etc., Upload the full 1080 or at least a 720P version! If you need server space, I've got a ton & would gladly set up a directory for your film to park on so others (including myself) can download it & watch in it's HD glory.

Kudos to all of you for keeping the drama in your films, and off the boards, for the most part

Mark Harris
02-02-2007, 11:22 PM
no VO in this one, though in the feature version there likely will be. But what's nice about this is it's not a film noir imitation, but film noir filtered through our sensibilities. It has the elements, but I think we put them together in our own way.

Blaine

Now that the fest is open, in addition to the smaller version on the mirrors, we are also offering a couple of different 720 versions of KATRINA:

Each of these 3 is about 200 megs, has some artifacting from compression, but is a decent compromise between quality and size.

http://www.desperatecomfort.com/katrina/katrina_h264_HD.mov

Thanks to Norm for helping us host these larger versions!

The smaller one has a couple of lines with sound sync issues, so the larger ones were encoded after the deadline with those things fixed.

Just to emphasize, the only reason we are doing this is we are NON-COMPETITION!!!! We don't count in the voting anyway. So we will not have any advantage over those of you who DO count in the voting.

Story & Acting
Wow! Ok, I haven’t had as much fun watching a film, since I saw “Once Upon A Time in Mexico” in the theatres. Now I am NOT saying your film is at all like that film, other than the enjoyability factor for me. If you were in competition with this one, it’d go straight to the top for me! Wow! The writing was FANTASTIC! Witty, almost lighthearted dialogue, that just flowed amazingly well. Great looking cast, and great performances as well. This is head and shoulders above everyone.

It's easy to see why you guys went Non-Comp on this. I don't see how you could have gotten a 6 minute cut out of it.

I thought the sound was well done, except at the 00:01:53 point where the dialogue lagged the lip movement by at least a full second or more. Visually, you put together a very nice picture. My only quibbles would be the choice you made of having Jack/Eric's face completely in shadow during such a large portion of his dialogue with Katrina in the alley. The other one was the dramatic color change in the bedroom. At first, I thought it was to show a passage of time but then you went back to it.

I really liked the story and the dialogue seemed well written and delivered. The only part I didn't like was the opening dialogue for almost a full minute over a black screen. It just felt like I was being 'fed' backstory.

Acting was good nearly across the board. Eric, Katrina and Casey all sold their roles. If there was a weak point it would have been the Tony Harris character which I didn't really buy and found more amusing than menacing.

Good job. If this had qualified for the competition it may very well have won it.

Timur, I watched the HD (1.13GB) version and I've got to say that it is striking. I see how you "fixed" that dialogue problem and I like that angle better, too. I noticed something that felt a little odd when I watched and had to go back to the other to verify it. It's when the Tony character offers Eric a cigarette then lights one himself. There is a somewhat jarring closeup cut then back to the two shot. The continuity feels a little off in it. These are all just minor problems in what is an excellent effort. It's not perfect yet, but it's damned good. All things being equal (if you could have had a good 6 minute version) I believe you'd have walked away with the prize.

holy hell.

This one and Eighteen Seconds are the two best shot films by far. That HVX+35adapter is one killer combination! Looked incredible. So sharp and filmic, it made me tear up wishing I had something like that!

The lighting choices were perfect and the dialogue was great. Very flowing. There were some spots near the end where the dialogue got a bit over-the-top, but that comes with the genre you were trying to achieve I'm guessing.

Acting was great. Editing was great. Cinematography was incredible. Story was great. Beautiful work! This would've been my top 2 for sure if you were in competition.

Thank you Lloyd!

This project had alot of scale. Mark made sure we would Building the Hotel set, securing the nightime outdoor shoot, secure the bar location, Steve, dressed the set, found the furniture, and MArtina found the costumes. Mark worked very very hard to make sure we got all of that so the Cinematography would have the texture neccesary to shine. PLus i had a lighting ninja on set to make sure the lighting was on point.

Some of the things you mention are the result of the thing not being polished. The opening will come with more opening titles and we just did not have time to get them done. But eventually, that will be an actual scene that we shoot, kicking the movie off with the bank robbery.

And if you got that Tony is not menacing, you got it RIGHT!!!! He's a small-fry dude, who wants to get into a big man's game. Even when the costumer bought a hat for him one size too small, I told her to keep it to help his dork-factor. The moment when I want him to start to seem like something more is near the end when he reveals that he knows Jack's real name.

as for the 6 min cut, yeah, I really wanted to keep practicing pacing in scenes, and let scenes play at what they would in a feature length, so I did not want to try to cram it down to 6 min.

Oh and Blaine, when I feed you backstory, shut up and eat it. It's good for you. :)

Well, this is one of those cases where you try something and it might work, and it might not work. I still like the edit choice there, but if ten people come up and say it bothered them like you did, I'm not married to it. It just felt right in that moment to me.

Thanks Lloyd, and you are right about the dialog. That's what made this project so fun and soooo challenging, was figuring out how far I could push that dialog before it got silly. And I agree with you, there are a couple of times where we just stepped over the edge with it. But live and learn. Even the Maltese Falcon has some lines that make me go: "Whoa! thanks for checking us out, Mark. I am making my way around to TTN today. Last night I was out in NJ at a murder mystery party, so am playing catch-up today.

the finished movie is even better than expected!! it looks like a frikkin feature and i could even imagine it as one. the main actor was amazing. the bedroom scene was edited very well and i especially like it when the cowboy came in. when the pace quickens and the music kicks in, i melted.

as a whole the film made me want to know more about the characters. why was the main actor getting into this in the first place? how he got out? That i think is the biggest success in a movie. compelling characters that capture the viewer.

some thoughts:
the girl actress wasn't as good as the others and she made some of the dialogue sound a bit clunky or unnatural. one part that stood out for me was when she said "now that we know where eachother stands, by a girl a drink..."

everything else has been covered really.

Thanks Alex! I am indeed writing a feature of this and this short - with a few minor additions, is basically the first 15 min of the feature right there. It sets up all of the players nicely and gives you as much as you need to know to get going with them. I am hoping that anyone I can go to for money will feel the way you do and in this opening, want to see and know more about the characters.

One thing about what you said about Lindsey's acting. She did exactly what I had her do. But this stuff is VERY hard to pull off with a straight face. This silly language, I mean. So I am not surprised that some of it might have stiffened up. But it was a fun exercise in writing and in the acting, and I learned a lot from directing the actors into how to try and play this stuff.

Yeah, I was TOTALLY into the scene with the heavy leaning on the guy for his money. What the hell is that back story???? Not to mention the whole outcome of the bank robbery and Katrina etc. etc. etc. ... In a sense, this is one friggin' hell of a trailer!!!

hahaha!!! What a damn great film! I loved it!

This film looks so f'n pro!

The acting is unbelievable!!! (I mean that in a good way!) The guy who played Jack/Eric is awesome! And the rest of your actors are just as good. (Except the big cowboy dude! Less screen time, the better for him! ) Kidding. Mark, you were awesome!

The cinematography is gorgeous. Just gorgeous. I can't say enough about what Timur has acheived here. And Aram's lighting is beautiful. WOW! Great job.

The story is complex and interesting. I got a little lost but I will watch it again to see what happened. One thing, I was very confused at her "character turn" while on the bed but I think that it is because there is the knock at the door. (Did a sfx get lost here?) Overall, I loved the story. You care for what happens to Jack.

Speaking of sound, there is one line off but I am sure that you know that. BUT your gun shots are great!!! Anyone using gunshots in their films (and there are many here in dramafest), refer to the folks here to find out how they pull off a good sounding gun shot.

Your ADR work is amazing. If you tell me that this entire film is ADR'd, I am going to fall over in amazement. It is flawless.

The opening VO sequences needs some kind of visual. Something. I was thinking that the video was bad on the link or something. I wanted to watch something. Even a waft of smoke or something. Maybe that is just me.

YOUR OPENING TITLE KICKS BUTT!!!!!!!!!

Wow! Hat's off to the Katrina Crew!!!!

GREAT JOB!!!

Thanks Ted, we are planning a much more detailed title sequence to go over the radio broadcast in the beginning, but I still liked that it kicked the film off with more of a bang, so included it in this cut. Personally, I like it as a little radio play at the start, but a lot of people seem lost with no visual there.

Watch a 720 version.

The gunshots were all Joe. I just kept giving him the note: "MAKE THE GUNSHOTS LOUDER"

Also, like in your film, Herman did an amazing job here on very little time. I only really said three words to him: "Mingus and Miles," and his head just took off. Kudos, Herman.

I still haven't watched this, yet. I DL'd the 720p version and it's sitting nextdoor waiting to be viewed on me HDTV.

I will get to it today! The freaking Fest download stopped on me about halfway for some reason and it won't play beyond that.

It may not look that great on an HDTV. Remember even the 1 gig version is still compressed. The raw is 53 gigs.

But I would be curious to hear how it works out on a tv with even that version.

Um, you're dead wrong about that, fella.

I checked the file out last night to make sure it worked. It looks mother fuxing fantastic on an HD CRT, dude.

No noise and glossy. It looks comparable to some other HD movies I've watched recently.

Yeah, probably tonight after I get through all of the shorts. Still got a few left but giving my eyes a break.

And, I'm only honest and I sure as hell am not the end all of reviews.

However, I gotta say, from what I've seen I'm very happy that you, as a writer, have a grasp of practical and believable dialogue dude. I know that the dialogue itself is genre specific, and yet it's still tailored to something that's engaging and realistic.

Thanks man, I commented a long time ago that i knew Aram and Timur were going to light it like Ninjas, I was worried that the writing was going to be stupid. And at moments, it brushes up against the noir-goofiness, but overall I worked on this script full time for about two months. And had had the idea and outline for a year before that. So I'm glad if it seems like all that work is coming through in the script.

And you know that's what I like to hear. A year in outline form, 2 months for thirteen minutes? Sounds like you actually GAVE A DAMN about what you were going to be putting on screen.

FUN! I like the story, and the film is very well shot- nice use of the Brevis! The whole film comes together well as a whole – and the noir feel really adds to the piece. This one is definitely towards the top of my list. Great work.

Wow, I am just a lurker here, but Katrina is worth a post. I set the hi-rez version to download before I left for work this morning and just watched it now (1hr 14min to dl and well worth it).

Very good technically and story wise. Lighting, camera and sound are all fantastic. Story and characters are developed enough that I want to know more about them. I would see this if it became a feature.

Mark, my girlfriend said you were great.

Timur, I hope I have half your skill someday.

Thanks for the 720 guys. I watched it on my 24" HD monitor and it looks amazing.

Most everything about this film, just felt right. Mark, you seem really good at keeping things at a more natural pace. Your restraint shows a ton of maturity.

I do have to say that when your cowboy character showed up it upset the balance of the story just a bit. I still liked the character, so don't get me wrong, but something made it standout a bit. I think it might be because everybody else had such subdued interaction and few words, with most emotion and you come in "guns blazing". Of course, I have no concept of how I would have done it any better. :) Of course, I was laughing at the "sweet cheeks" line (thought that was pretty funny), so maybe that was what threw it off for me.

Again, that's not enough to ruin it for me. I figured you, Timur and the crew would pull off something nice, so my expectation where high. You guys actually surpassed what I was hoping for.

I haven't been able to read all 75 pages :) , but I'm sure others have mentioned the wonderful tone, color pallet as well as clean dialogue, great cinematic feel, shot selection, etc. .

That's my opinion anyway.

Great job folks.

No, you are way right about the tone change. It may throw some people off, but it's intentional. Him being a cowboy is another sort of icon of Americana in here.

Tony, the credit dude, is all about one aspect of America, the whole thing about living beyond your means with credit cards, and how credit card companies will bleed you dry like the mob, if they have their way.

Jack is you and me, just trying to get by and there is no way we can afford the American dream without debt.

Katrina is the easy way to money, the crooked way, which is mighty seductive, but also might get you killed.

The Cowboy sort off represents the American attitude of "Fuck you, I'm doing it my way."

So even though the choices might hit some people oddly, at least you know there is some intent behind them and the themes I want to keep playing with in the story...

Well, as long as the chicks dig me...

No, thanks very much for watching and for taking the time to DL the 720. We honestly believe the movie is better large, and gives you so much more of the great work Timur, Aram, the Set and costume designers did, as well as more of the subtleties of the performances.
