Yeah, all you mofos get to go to beddy bye while I have to sit here at work. My eyes burn, my ass burns, my feet burn... but it was worth it.
Thanks Mark! I can't wait for Sat. to do it all again.
I was running around so much yesterday I think I wore out a few years on my hips. They are grinding a little today. I burned my fingers a few times forgetting to put my gloves on too but its all "Gravy".
Sleep tight all snug in your bed
with visions of Katrina dancing in your heads.
PS. I have the BTS pics online. Just give the ok Mark and ill post a link.

That China ball was actually Timurs, there was 400 watts in there i think. It wasnt strong enough for the Katrina shots and I had to break out a softbox for her to give her that nice soft natural look. It was strong enough for the fill on the guys though. I dont think we turned it off for any shots either.
The close up of the cup i used light shot through some liquer bottles that were on the wall to get that streaky green and orangy light. I used that technique on only one other shot but its a nice change of color in the frame. I kind of wished there was more time to get some gels out and test but we were on overdrive and lighting on the fly without much of a plan and it got pushed to the side. There are some nice glowy shots of Katrina I cant wait to see, got her hair to illuminate from the back in one shot that looked amazing..

Cool. Thanks for that info.
I was enjoying that shot of the cup. The lighting really stood out for me. Nice.
As for the China Ball light, I know that Kevin (our DP) used some special temp lights that didn't have any subtle "flicker" or something like that. That's why I asked. I guess those bulbs are fairly pricey!
Thanks for the info. Great work... all of you!

Holy crap i just woke up....
Yea the lighting was the fun part. Aram and i worked up some diagrams, but as usualy things needed to be tweaked. i built a buncha lights for this projec tthat 450Watt china ball contraption was one of them, i also built a light gun, but it didint really work well, and we never used it. I conferred with aram, and we lit the set till we could reach an exposure at F2.8 on the 35mm lenses. this way as we switch back and forth between the lenses the exposure stays realtively the same. Aram the lighting ninja, took care of making it all happen on set, and kept everybody pretty.
EXCELLENT work aram. Excellent. He translated my vision into reality with dead accuracy.

I have to concur with you there, Mark (about being the director). It was so frickin' great to have Kevin, Blaine and Tim on board to take care of making the pictures pretty. Wow. So different than my horrorfest entry were I often forgot that I had to act as well!!!
Really exciting stuff here.
Keep up the great work!

yeah, it sounds terrible as a filmmaker, but I really am not that interested in lights and camera. I mean, I am very happy to have a really good DP and gaffer, so I can really just focus on actors and writing and getting the story across.
Ted Arabian
01-18-2007, 01:59 PM
I guess it may sound terrible, but that is what they do (and they love it!). And the more that you can focus on the actors and getting the story across the better.
I really, REALLY loved not having to worry about the camera and lights. And it is funny.... not too long ago, I thought that I wanted to be the one BEHIND the camera. I don't think so anymore. Not as long as you have someone who can acheive the vision.
I kinda feel like throwing my dvx up on the marketplace and never touching it again!!!

Exactly! That is how you gotta do it. Filmmaking is a team sport! And there are SO MANY players involved! It is why I was so excited and ready to fly across the country 3 times to make this film. I didn't want to do that one-man show again!!!
Mark Harris

Aram, pray tell what is the super-skilled technique for getting that green in there?

Beat Takeshi
01-18-2007, 02:50 PM
Did already, its a few pages back. I think it was a bottle of Pucker and a bottle of tequila with a 150 shooting through it with black wrap to make a snoot. I also did it in a close up of the collection dude. I threw some color on Godfried's arm in the foreground. The idea in my head was that since it was a close up of money I thought the green shafts kind of represented the power money has, it's almost godlike, hence the shafts of light. Thats just my own way of justifying the motivation for the light. I think if you went through every shot I can tell why something is there and what its doing even if its my own little inturpretation. For "Lake of Fire" there is a TON of these things planned out.
TimurCivan
01-18-2007, 02:59 PM
lol.... I love aram....
Beat Takeshi
01-18-2007, 04:15 PM
The funny thing is when I hear people talk about why they did things in depth and it starts to get weird I think its bs but I do the same damn thing and don't even realize it. Like in Lake of Fire, everything thats essential in the story happens in 3's and each is a beat and a half apart this symbolises the torment the hit man is going through also everything falls in 3's symbolising the demons in his mind coming to the surface and him falling away from reality. Also when this happens the cuts happen in 3's just to further push the idea. There are some other things in there that I don't want to mention until the film is done but they are even deeper than that.
TimurCivan
01-18-2007, 09:02 PM
well then i think people need to accept that as a work of art, there are intentional choices made, that reflect the final product. Good films, paintings, drawings, sculptures etc.... doent happen by accident you know??

WORKFLOW:
Here is some information on the workflow we are using to shoot Katrina. First off we are using the HVX / SGproREV2/ Serious magic HD rack software combination. we are shooting 720/24P over 60P with a 2:3 pull down. The reason for this is that the HDrack software cannot capture 24pN.
Footage logging: While theoretically we can shoot without Cards, i opted to keep the camera with a P2 card inside. the reasoning is this. If the Fire wire cable should be disconnected for any reason, and the HD rack capture be interrupted, the P2 card will be capturing the shot and the take is not wasted. since its flash, who cares if it gets full. When it fills, i reformat after the end of the take, and continue recording. HD rack is a GREAt piece of software, and its full res 720P Monitor while sharp, has a 1/2 second lag, and doesnt display the full framerate, leading to the image being jerky. This was a major problem for me while operating the camera as i couldnt frame up while the actors moved, because of the lag. However, i had a lowresolution, 16:9 DVD player with me for framing purposes, and this quickly solved the problem. The HD rack monitor is SUPERB for Focusing however, its Razor sharp.
Camera/SGpro: The HVX is truly an EXCELLENT camera. we utilized The Variable framerates, the natural, rich lush look it provides and in combination with its high dynamic range, and great highlight handling it provided a very film like latitude with great definiton. Aram, Alex Depew, Steve Bowling and I lit the set very carefully. I made a plan to light the set until we could reach a proper exposure at F2.8 on my 35mm Canon FD lenses. The reason i settled on F2.8 is this. i have 5 primes. the slowest of the bunch are two lenses, both F2.8, probably closer to T3.0 - T3.5. My theory is as follows, if you can light until your darkest (slowest) lens gets proper exposure to the camera, then you can interchange freely among the different lenses, without a disparity of wide ranging exposures in the footage. On Bloody Mary, some of the footage was VERY dark in comparison to the different setups in the same scene, because i used a slower F4 Wideangle lens as a wide shot to closeups shot with a 55mm F1.2. the CU's were about 3 stops brighter, and matching up the footage in post was difficult. ( thank you Zoe White (future ASC member for sure) for helping me realise this) Now if we had lit the scene to a point where the F4 lens had proper exposure, we could always close down the F1.2 lens, to compensate for added brightness ( or stop down the dvx iris to maintins the F1.2 super SHDOF instead). Also the added benefit is that the lenses get alot sharper when you stop down a bit, this is espacially evident in HD.
The SGpro Rev2 adapter is a hidden secret among 35 adapters. ITs the best 35 adapter that noone knows about. WAyne kinney, whom i have had an ongoing email conversation with for over a year, has kept me updated to all the advancements, and refinements hes been making in his design. Esssentially it breaks down like this. its a Spinning GG adapter, like the M2. Unlike the M2, it exhibits almost no vingetting, and because of a professionally designed, custom Achromatic Diopeter, it exhibits ZERO chroma Aberation, and No resolution loss on the edges of the frame. Also Waynes Secret weapon, the "magic GG" as he calls it. he wont tell me what he does to it. And quite frankly i dont care so long as it keeps putting out the image quality that it does. Pay attention to the quality of the Bokeh. it most closely resemebles 35mm Film, out of all the 35 adapters, including the Mini35. Its rich and solid, and doesnt allow the residual image to Ghost though creating a low quality look. This great piece of equiptment in combination with Great Canon FD lenses, provided us with a superb and fully controlabe camera setup. Because all my lenses are FD SSC lenses, and are spherical in build, they exhibit that distict charachteristic, found in most cinema lenses, the round disc of out of focus light. The fact that we matched the lenses in apeture helped meld the different charachteristics of the lenses together, and created in essence a "matched" set of Primes.
I am using:
Zesnar 16mm F2.8 Semi Fisheye
Canon FD 24mm F2.8
CAnon FD 35mm F2.0 SSC
Canon FD 50mm F1.4 SSC
Canon FD 55mm F1.2 SSC
Canon FD 125mm F2.5 SSC
Zesnar 200mm F 3.5 (su
Now you may be askin why do i have a 50mm and a 55mm??? The reason is the two lenses have different looks, the 55mm has a bit of barrel distortion at full wide when focusd up close, this creates a very unique effect that i put to good use. also, since closing down to F1.4 is a possibility, the lens instantly gets much sharper, and still retains almost no light loss. Also, the Zesnar lenses are Russian made lenses, based on german designs. They are relativly inexpensive, but perform very well.
AS far as the look goes, i was interested in crating a Dark smoky look. Incase you hadn't notices based on the poster. :D.
I conferred with aram, that i wanted mostly hard back lighting, with Semi Hard Keylights, and Soft fills. I was influenced by the looks of films like "Cape Fear" "Out Of Sight" "The Underneath" and "The Black Dalia". My art references were, Edward hoppers drab, lonely worlds, Cindy Sherman's nostalgic sarcasm, and some of my own tricks ;) . While i didnt exactly copy any of these looks, i was very interested in incorporating my own art photographs into this. The hard, bright lights, and gels, to reference a kind of superreal that only works in Photgraphs, Theatre and Film. Its increadible how much disparity from reality the eye will tolerate so long as its beautiful. I hope the photographs i have taken you will all find beautiful. But you have to look fast, cause they flash by 24 times a second.......

yeah, I will write more about the concept later, but in general, I gave Timur several Soderberg films to watch, like the Limey, Out of Site, The Underneath, and told him just to filter those into his head. I then told him and the costumer, the set designer, that I wanted to indicate noir, without copying noir. I wanted noir to filtering through our sensibilities. the dialog also has a lot of noir tones, and a couple of outright corny lines. I've been working with the actors and telling them that the only way this stuff works is if they are 100% committed to it. And they are.
So my job is to make sure the performances are real and true and spontaneous and exciting, so all f this gorgeous lighting doesn't just become pretty - but boring - pictures.
I also told the set designer and costumer that I wanted to hint at 50s. It's not set in the 50s, but I wanted that as their influence.
I've also started giving Herman ideas on the music I want, and he agrees. We're looking at undertones of Mingus and Miles, again not imitating, but Herman's taking those influences and working them into his head. Then layer over something along the lines of Morcheeba, or even portishead, which to me represents the Cindy Sherman aesthetic timur mentioned, modern takes on classic things. Anyway, I know whatever Herman does will come out entirely his own as well.
A quick addition to workflow. I am capturing to a USB2 external enclosure with a 300gig SATA drive inside, then backing up to an identical drive at regular intervals. I was going to go with this whole RAID thing, but honestly, I've put enough money into this damned thing already and put the RAID off for another day.

My favorite BTS shot of the night:

(JimTheJib... Err... Can I be arrested for that?)
And my second fave:
http://puffinfilms.com/Katrina%20Shoot/DSC00338.JPG
The characteristically intense Steve2Bees, who came up with one of the lighting saves of the night when he set up an outside light through the front windows and gave some much-needed depth and shadow to the background. You'd have to ask someone else for details, but I can tell you it made a huge difference.

Hi Timur,
Wow, your poster image and design are fantastic. The lighting (as seen in the still frames) is equally fantastic. I simply can't wait to watch it. Did you have any follow focus issues when utilizing the Canon lenses due to them not having distance markers on the barrel, and if so, how did you overcome them? Great technical details on the lighting mechanics of shooting with multiple lenses, as well! Rock on.

thank you, the lighting is also the responsibility of the Lighting ninja Aram Bauman.
All CAnon FD lenses have distance markers on the lens barrel. With a properly tuned SGpro/M2/Brevis, they are accurate to the inch. Pulling focus was difficult, only because we did not have a decent monitor. My next purchase is a Onboard flipping monitor. Preferably the highest resolution i can find. As well as a Follow focus. thats vital, i was pulling focus by hand, and it shakes the camera.

Yeah, last night was a lot of fun and very smooth. I am going to send a note to Paul Sorvino to thank him again for being so generous. They were a multi-million dollar feature and we were teeny tiny and they just treated us with as much respect as they would've another full on feature. I am pretty convinced they even took a long lunch to give us more time to get our money shots before they set up gear that would've been in our way.
And though it was cold, the crew of course pereformed like a machine. You guys are going to spoil me, and then when I go work with another crew, I'll expect this same level of magic.
I'll write more later to thank everyone, but real quick, this film would absolutely not been possible with Steve and Aram. As good as Timur is at shooting, you add in Aram and as they say in Brooklyn, fuggettaboutit. Steve was responsible for much of our production design. He gave his characteristic 200%. MsManhattan was vital as well, keeping me sane and doing a lot of unsung work so that I did not have to think about it. I really hope to work with all of them again.
Depew really whipped it out too. Man, he was like a movie monkey, just all over the set, lights here, boom there, move this, make the money, boom boom boom, done done done. Nice work, Alex.
More later, about to go take the set back to Jersey.
I like this grab from last night. Can't wait to see the others.

the night scne was fun. i had aram running around with a 40 pound 2K, a 90 pound generator, a 650W and a 300watter. lighting up that whole street. he was skeptical that it would show... but once he saw the LCD.... he was all over thoes lights like white on rice. i forgot how bright a 2k was......
lemme tell yous guys a quick tip on lighting an exterior at night. your brightest light should be your backlight. and point it from very far away, almost into the lens of the camera. this amkes the pavement and buildings come alive. plus it is very efficent as it only uses one light. Dont front light. there has to be shadows on the faces to read as a night time shot. we exaggerate this but under normal circumstancces try not to use too much fill.

Quick question, is there a reason why that green is there on the 4th still from the pictures above? Is it coming from a sign on the window or something? Just curious.

Yeah the green was on purpose. I talked about it before so heres a quote. "The close up of the cup i used light shot through some liquer bottles that were on the wall to get that streaky green and orangy light. I used that technique on only one other shot but its a nice change of color in the frame. I kind of wished there was more time to get some gels out and test but we were on overdrive and lighting on the fly without much of a plan and it got pushed to the side. There are some nice glowy shots of Katrina I cant wait to see, got her hair to illuminate from the back in one shot that looked amazing."
Beat Takeshi
01-22-2007, 12:13 PM
Here is the second part of that after Mark asked me to explain that shot.
"I think it was a bottle of Pucker and a bottle of tequila with a 150 shooting through it with black wrap to make a snoot. I also did it in a close up of the collection dude. I threw some color on Godfried's arm in the foreground. The idea in my head was that since it was a close up of money I thought the green shafts kind of represented the power money has, it's almost godlike, hence the shafts of light. Thats just my own way of justifying the motivation for the light."

TimurCivan
01-22-2007, 04:34 PM
i think thebrevis and the sg are about equal. the sg is a bit more flexible. as you can shoot with high shutter speeds, but the brevis with the special low light screen is a tad faster. However for brigghter scenes you need to change GG screens. I would hate to have to keep changing screens. The Sgpro, is just more flexibile, thats why i liek it. Plus the image quality is equally astounding.

Dude, you're getting locked in a cage next to Timur's cage. I only let you out to light from now on.
Mark Harris
01-22-2007, 05:21 PM
Yeah, this was a place where Aram saw the opportunity to add to the shot. I hadn't thought of that. But later on, in Sat's shoot, I had another part where I had Aram watch the scene and creatively adjust a light as the tension in the scene built. We were on the same track of thinking with that, and I want to keep doing more of that stuff as we go on.
Here is the second part of that after Mark asked me to explain that shot.

Yea, color harmony is something Aram is VERY good at. Mark and i were discussing it today, while striking the set, color is something we want to pay attention to in future projects. Its something I experimented with in ManHole: IV, in the opening scenes based on an idea in his earlier episodes. But now that i have a much stronger grasp on how to control the light, i think working with aram on color in the future will lead to interesting effects. I look forward to it.

mark was just telling me where to put the camera..... at gun point.
MsManhattan
01-23-2007, 08:49 PM
Yeah, but what you cant see in that pic is me off-camera aiming the elephant gun at Mark's head.
That was the easiest AD job ever -- Mark put a great team together and cultivates an environment where you just want to do the best job you can. The shoots were challenging -- long shot lists and long hours -- but they flowed so well and moved along at such a good clip that they never felt as challenging in the execution as they looked like they would be on paper. He thought out everything so well in advance, picked such focused, flexible actors, and leveraged each individual crew member's best talents so well that everything on-set just clicked. And everyone had a good time along the way.
Thanks, Mark -- it was a pleasure to be able to make a contribution.

Guys, the grabs look excellent. Aram, great job on the lighting too :-) Timur, Wayne is lucky to have such an enthusiastic supporter, and based on my experience, I can guarantee you're providing him with lots of inspiration on the flip side.

Hey Mark, Timur, Aram and the rest.... I just had to write and say again how wonderful your project looks. I keep seeing those grabs in my head and am just dying to shot something with this style of lighting and directing. It really looks fantastic! I absolutley LOVE the lighting.
Great job, guys. Really looking forward to your film.

Thanks Dennis and Ted! Timur did an awsome job with Wayne's adapter and I hope to do the same with the new Brevis on my next joint. :)
Ted Arabian
01-24-2007, 07:58 AM
Yeah, that adapter really does a nice job. I really want to have one of those! I have been keeping the M2 in the back of my head as a future buy but I don't know.
Timur, do you have access to the M2? I would love to see some side-by-side comparisons. (Not now, obviously..... but down the road.)

thanks ted, I am in the heat of editing now, and I hope to GOD this thing flies. It's a tough genre to pull off, but it's looking like a ton of fun right now. I hope it is for the viewers.

Mark, when you have time, I would love to know what you mean about the genre being tough to pull off. (the time setting, the props, the "feeling") Seriously, I am so enamored with your grabs that I want to go out and create a film of this genre... I would love to know how and why it is tough to pull off. (maybe it is the CCing of the period.)
Anyway, good luck. I can't wait to see this!!!

not to diminish what timur and aram and the crew did, but the lighting is like the easiest part. mainly because with guys that talented, you can just do it. they know what they're doing and just move in and make it happen. same with the costumes, set etc. Its all a lot of work, but with good people, they just go get the stuff and it's done.
I will detail more late, but what's hard is selling the writing. this thing is written very much like a film noir, which is what it is, and whats tough is having the actors sell the lines without them sounding stupid. It's working out, but I was pretty nervous last night. :)
Ted Arabian
01-24-2007, 09:20 AM
I see. That makes sense. Is this your first attempt at film noir?
Mark Harris
01-24-2007, 09:32 AM
yep. I mean, the lights will look good whether the movie is stupid or not. Just don't be surprised if I save it for ComedyFest :)

Are you really nervous? I think Godfrey,Brandon and Linsdey Knocked it out of the park. ESPECIALLY godfrey on the third night of shooting.... HE was AWESOME.
Mark Harris
01-24-2007, 12:13 PM
yeah, well looking at the raw footage, I was like: "this is silly." But it's cutting nicely. Even I'm pretty good! We missed some nuances of Lindsey's performance that she had in rehearsal. I think just nerves, but I should have stayed on top of her more...er, well...that came out wrong. Anyway, when i bring her in to ADR, I am going to adjust some line reads to bring those nuances back into the performance.
But it's cutting pretty nicely. I am about done with sc 3, and about to do the last scene for this cut.

I hope that you can snap a few bts shots during ADR. Do you use a special room? I was checking out Ryan's (235 Studio) and Norm's (Envision) set-up. Would like to gather some ideas here for future work.

We've all worked togethr in this configuraton twice. Once on a Music Video in the summer, and on KAtrina. I ahve worked with Aram, on a commercial, and with mark and steve on 5 different projects. They are all fantastic, and instrumental to the final product. Ilve noticed the more of us work on these projects, the better they turn out.

Yo but you guys who have never had Herman do your score really dont understand how talented he is. he makes music from scratch, plays all the instruments, and composes it, in DIFFERENT GENRES as if he only played that Genre his WHOLE LIFE!!!!!
I am in Awe..... THank you again Herman.

i just watched the final edit ( contest version). WOW. And there isnt even a soiund mix. Conrad Johnson is doing that for us as we speak. Herman, is also CRANKIN on the final touches on the scrore.
The score is on my ipod and i listen to it all the time. the music is SOOOOOOOOO good. (think Bladerunner soundtrack, meets Charles Mingus)
