Now I know that the V1U slow motion setting is only about half-resolution, but I was wondering -- is there any way to get decent slow mo like an HVX by some other means?
What are my best options?

Here's a sample clip of what the V1U's "slow mo" function looks like.

If that's what its "smooth slow rec" function looks like, it's a completely useless gimmick.
If you want slow-mo from a camcorder other than the HVX, you've pretty much got to do what we used to do on the DVX: shoot 60i, then in post slow it to 40% speed to turn each field into its own frame. But even then you'll only be simulating the motion of 60p at lower res, and you won't have any capability to simulate 32, 36, 40, 44, 48, 52, etc.

There are cameras that can do that, certainly. Jarred was playing with one at www.purposelabs.com (http://www.purposelabs.com) (the footage of which is where his avatar comes from). They've got some example movies on there shot at 2200fps!

i slowed that clip down 40% in the 24p timeline. its sooooo nice and slow. but looks like utter garbage.

Your best option would probably be shooting 1080i60, deinterlacing to create 1080p60 and slowing it down 40% to 24p.

Smooth slow rec is useless for intercutting with HD material, but I wouldn't call it a "completely useless gimmick." The resolution is probably fine for SD material. Sony has examples of it on their V1U promo DVD and it looks pretty good to me at SD resolution. For the 3 sec mode, the resolution is 640 x 360 and for the 6 or 12 sec modes, it's 512 x 320.
Clearly, the main reason for Smooth Slow Rec is motion analysis work like golf swings, baseball bat swings and tennis swings since it captures at 240 fields/sec for a very limited duration. For this purpose, I could see it being very useful. Sure, you might never need to do any motion analysis work but at least the feature is there if you need it. I don't think we should rag on a manufacturer for at least trying to add new features.
