im gonna be getting a gs 180 in the mail with a rode video mic, is it possible to make some kinda of boom stick out of pvc or cheap metal?? has anyone done this?? get back to me with any ideas or suggestions

When I made one, I went down to Home Depot, and picked up a $7 paint pole. Rather ghetto, but it got the job done.

invest the $100+ that will get you even the basic professional boom pole. Less shake and flex will be better for your overall sound quality.

For around $10-$15, you can buy an adapter on ebay that will mount your shock mount to a painter's pole. Ace hardware has foam rubber tubes for .99, that will fit the pole and insulate it some from handling noise.

I made a boom pool out of a cheap fishing rod.
Its cheap and durable -AND its light.

i just made one out of a old mic stand, i went all the way and even routed the mic cable on the inside of the pole. just waiting for my shock mount now.
