I have to shoot some footage with a small consumer camera and then deinterlace it later. * Would it make a real difference to use PAL because even after the resolution loss of deinterlacing the footage would still be much better than NTSC after deinterlacing?

NTSC has 525 horizontal lines vs PAL 625 horizontal lines.
So overall PAL has better horizontal resolution.

Haven't had the chance to work with PAL, but it should be the same as for NTSC, when you deinterlace you either drop half of horizontal lines or do some kind of interpolation. Both result in lower image quality.

So I guess the effects on image quality are proportionately the same on either format. But yes, you will end up with more lines of resolution with PAL.

And if you want to make a 24p version PAL will give better quality. NTSC must make a pulldown.
