Sound Problems help!

I'm a new user to the camera. I bought a teaching DVD for the camera..seen it 10 times, still can't figure out the deal with hooking up a shotgun mic. I shot my first TV commercial, reviewed the tape, and it sounded like the sound was a coombination of the onboard mic AND the shotgun. How do I disable the onboard mic so only the shotgun mic is heard? Can anyone also instruct me on the differeent sound settings? HELP!

On the side of the cam, under the LCD there's switches that say

CH 1 Select CH 2 Select
INT(L) INT (R)
Input 1 Input 2
Input 2

INT means the internal mic, the input selections correspond with the XLR inputs on the the front of the cam. You need to switch to whatever input you have your mic going in to.

I suggest putting it in Input 2, and running both channels off it.
