View Full Version : Playstation3 is a Steal?

Maybe I'm going crazy...
The PS3 is $500-600, right? Ridiculous price for a game console.
BUT, it plays Blu-ray Discs, no? The cheapest Blu-ray player I can find is still around $1000. So, does that not make the new PS3 a heck of a deal?

It's only a bargain because if you can get one at $600 tomorrow you can flip it on Ebay for $1900. Insane, but if you can score 2-3 of them... well then.
Then again, I don't play video games

It'd be a bargain only if you were gung-ho to torch $1,000 on a blu-ray player. If you were the first guy on the block to buy a LaserDisc, then this might seem like a great deal.
Apparently you can buy the $200 HD-DVD add-on for the XBOX 360 and adapt it to run on a Windows PC and have a fully-functional high-def player, so $600 for a PS3? Buy it for what it is, if that's what you want...
Regular DVD players are down to $30. blu-ray players for $1000? Don't count on 'em sticking at that price point for very long! I think it's pretty doubtful that many consumers will look at it and say "why yes, I'd like to spend 33x as much".

Especially when you consider that the format might not catch on and you could be stuck with the BetaMax of the 21st century.:)

I would say if you want it, it's a good deal... I am going for the 360 eventually myself...

My Atari 2600 with Sega Genesis controllers would get lonely if I bought one of these.

You have a 2600 with Genesis controllers? So, what do you do with the extra 5 buttons!?

They all do the same thing. It's great because 2600 controllers can be hard to come by these days.

Latest news is that the PS3 isn't fully backwards compatible; some existing games won't play at all on it, some only work partially, some sort of work and then lock up. Sony really, really needs to get this one right, and it ain't looking like any sort of slam dunk. On the plus side, the Japanese customers have been snatching it up, so maybe they'll pull the rabbit out of the hat after all.

Sony is selling the PS3 at a loss. It's reported that it costs them more than $800 us to make largely due to the extremely expensive third-party Blue Ray player. So yes, if you're buying the PS3 for it's Blue Ray capabilities it is a steal because you get sponsorship from the Big Wigs over at Sony.
remains to be seen if the format will stick tho. As far as I know the onlo people who still use Laser Disc are asian Karaoke enthusiasts.

Looks like the geeks over at Gizmodo.com agree with me. Here's a complete rundown of the production cost of the PS3 and proof that Sony is indeed selling the machines at a substantial loss:
"The premium model costs $840.35 to make (Which sells at a loss for $600.)"
The whole story (http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/home-entertainment/ps3-a-bargain-worth-840-powerful-as-a-supercomputer-215203.php)

I just went over to Best Buy to pick up some CD-Rs. There were 12 tents parked in front of the store. At first I thought, 'What a bunch of losers.' But seeing as how many of them are going to be listing their new PS3 on eBay and making a few hundred bucks off of it, made me kind of wish I had nothing better to do tonight.

Yes this may be true, but I think Sony is not thinking about short term basis, think about how long Sony PS3 Will be around, in that time, initially they will sell at a loss, BUT as time increases these 3rd party componets will drop in price eventually it turns the other way round, NEXT a console is not much good with out games, so even if you are selling at a loss, the games revenue can bridge that gap. The Games industry is Huge.
Its like printers, the manufactures make more on the consumables than the actual price of the printer (thats why they are so damn cheap these days) and they have contracts with major outlets stopping them from stocking 3rd party Ink!
Anyway Its Sonys Headache.
If you are a gamer the price is irrelivant. There are not that many options. You are either going to buy it or not. Price is after.
And is it a real surprise to anyone that this thing will have problems? They're rushing it out. It's a serious piece of tech to generate HD graphics in real time.
The gamers have been camped out for days in toronto.

Forget PS3 for now. There's nothing on it that looks interesting as far as gaming goes. And I'm definitely not hung up on Blu-Ray.
Next year, when Final Fantsay 13, Silent Hill, and the new Resident Evil hits? I'll have one.

Circuit city here in nyc was selling 160 units and raffling 100.
I camped out for 2 1/2 days to buy a system (with the intentions of ebaying it)
And ended up being of the 100 raffle winners.
And they gave me the option to buy a system also. so i did. and im keeping one.
AND my friend camped with me so in total we have 3 systems (2 for ebay)
Crazy thing was, when the 100 winners we called and escorted into the store, we were told 2 things.
1-If you were under 18 you cant accept your prize without a parent
2-You still have to pay tax on the system (about $40)
If you didn’t meet any of the above-mentioned things you had 5min to get it.
So many people panicked trying to get there parents and/or begging people in the streets for money. A lot of people camped out just for the raffle and didn’t bring money.
lol. it was insane.

Well just because it sold for 15k$ doesn't mean that money changes hands. Check eBay for closed auctions on PS3 systems, then re-sort them to show highest price first, and you'll see that most high dollar PS3 auctions had their high bidder be de-registered by eBay.
Sellers and buyers beware!
Looks like this PS3 launch is drawing out [someof] the worst in humanity, so for the honest sellers/buyers there's definitely an increased risk.

I was planning on camping out to get one. I could have used the profits to get an M2 and some lenses hah. But I have barely used eBay and they've got really strict policies specifically for selling the PS3. You've got to have sold enough merchandize and hold a certain feedback rating.

I've been in bed recovering from 21/2 days of an endurance test lol.
Make sure i dont get sick.
My bro just left to buy some games. The system only came with a blu-ray copy of Taladaga nights (sp?)
I really didnt do any research on this thing at all, other than how much i can get on ebay. Dont even know what games are out yet.
Im waiting for the Wii :)

I just heard some guy in Tennessee got shot and killed waiting in line for a PS3... apparently, somebody decided to hold up the line with a gun and when this guy refused to hand over his money, he was shot. Anyone else hear of this?

Well after playing a friend's PS3 and Xbox 360 together this weekend, I have to admit that you are getting what you pay for. The graphics potential is much better on the PS3, although a few games I saw haven't pulled out all of the stops yet. Two of the best examples are the Call of Duty 3 comparison and the upcoming Muhammad Ali game. The Ali screenshots are night-and-day different, with the PS3 as the obvious winner.
Personally, I prefer PC games for the quality, resolution, controller possibilities and modding capability. However, the PS3 is impressive. Blu-Ray is nice, but if I can't master my stuff to the format yet I don't want it. Sheesh, I don't even have an HDTV yet.
The forthcoming PS3 game called Assassins looks incredible, and as a huge fan of the similar Thief series, this should be a good game.
If you prefer thumb controller-based systems, then this is definitely the best looking of the bunch. I heard that the 360 has 1080i as a spec, but the current output port only supports 720p? Does that mean that Microsoft will be selling some crazy adapter to make more money? I'm not sure since I'm no HD expert.

I heard this exact same thing but in Connecticut. It was a guy from Massachusetts that took the short drive down to wait in line and the line got robbed, the guy said no and a kid shot him in the chest. There were two guys holding up the line, one had a shot gun and the other just a hand gun.
I will eventually get a PS3, it won't be any time soon but will most likely favor that over the 360. If PS3 doesn't really have any good exclusive games, I may go w/ the 360. I think that the ps3 is really more so a next generation gaming system, more than the 360.

Hmm, word is PS3 has some kind of scaling bug because its meant to do 720P, if you have as set that does not do 720P and only 1080i then it forces and spits out 480P BUT it should be fixed in a software update (unless this is old news and its already been done)
So for now if your HDTV is 1080i only then get a 720P to see how PS3 really looks like

You would think that they would have tested everything time and time again and made sure it worked every way before releasing it. I know they wanted to get it out before 'the holiday season' but they should have had everything fixed first instead of having to download updates, which i don't want to do when I get one, which'll be in a long time.
Anhar Miah
11-25-2006, 06:12 PM
well its not a major problem, Just that if you have a HDTV that ONLY supports 1080i input only then does it get 480P.
But sony have said that the update will fix it.
