okay so its a must that i go to college because of parents. im interning in burbank this summer for evolution film and tape inc., i met them because they shot a reality show for jet blue that my family was on (you mightve seen it if youve taken a jet blue flight this year). i always talked tech with the people working there and got offerend an internship. the thing is, i know a lot more than i think is expected of freshman film schoolers and am wondering the place for me. i was considering uc santa cruz and also the academy of art san francisco. has anybody had experience with either colleges? i know i dont need it, but my parents think its what you need to be successful. theyre very ignorant. so any help? i am trying to decide. or maybe i can persuade my parents to let me go without college, i pretty much just have to line up a constant workflow in the business, which is nearly impossible i know because most is freelance. but thats the only way i can convince them. and i can always film weddings for easy bank if worst comes to worst.

Well, it's like Mark Twain said - 'Before I went to school I was amazed by how ignorant my father was...and after I got back, I was amazed by how much the old man had learned.'

USC an option...?

PS--why NOT go to college? Its a great time! Youll probably meet more of the people you'll be working with later on down the road...

I would go back to school in a heartbeat.....I miss college as it is. If I had the chance to go back or stay for more years than I did, I would-

Dont be in such a rush to start working. College will offer you much more oppurtunity to do creative things than working at a place....

Well I'm In College right now. But really, the main reason I'm there is because:

1/ I have access to all video equiptment like DVX's for £5 deposit. Or something like that..
2/ There's a girl there. [Amazing, since there normally arent. >_>]

But. I guess, since I don't exactly understand 60% of your post. You just have to go with what you really want inside. YOUR the person who wants to do film. Not your parents. So go with YOUR gut feelings. It's your career path your going to be planning. And you probably know more about film than your "mom + pa" right? Basically. If it was me. And someone was sort of telling me/forcing me to do something I wouldn't do. I'd either.

1/ Wack them about with a rubber duckie.
or
2/ If they were a family member. I'd kindly tell then to bugger off.

It's your life. Do what You want. Not what your Family wants. [Yet again I probably read the first post all wrong.]

College will probably bum you out, since most insist on the use of capital letters and the occasional apostrophe.

I think some two-year colleges offer apostrophe-free Associate Programs...

OK, don't rip on the kid too much.

But I will say this: it's not a wise person who eschews education, especially when it's because he thinks he already knows. The most startling discovery that most college freshmen experience is the sheer enormity of what they don't know.

I agree with all of this. I'm currently a film student at Emerson College in Boston, and just being here has given me more opportunities and connections than I could have possibly imagined.

Also---

When I was in school I routinly questioned the ciricumlum that they assigned to us...such as the calc classes and social science etc.

Truth be told---the best filmmakers I have met are very well rounded people, they know about politics, arts, culture, music, color, fabrics...you name it, they have some form of knowledge in it.
Unless you just want to be a techie---or a grip or something, then you should just get an apprenticeship somewhere and learn your trade and that will be that.

If your looking to do directorial work, or maybe be a DP or something like that, you need to know EVERYTHING you can...it will only help you in the long run.

As for as useless college classes that I took, that help me achieve my goals today are the pysch 101-102-103's and the social science, and the criminalogy etc. It helps to know why people and characters do the things they do etc. etc.

And if that isnt enough.....
Theres lots of girls....lots and lots of girls.

That's true. Good hunting, on campus.
