Hey all, I want all y'alls opinions on this please.
I heard that you guys (or at least some of you) recommend using a low-end consumer camcorder as a "deck" to play footage recorded on the DVX so as to not wear down the heads of the DVX.
So I purchased a little Panasonic PV-GS9 to utilize as I capture my tapes to my Macintosh (go apple!) computer.
Here's what I want to know:
*Will there be any problems playing back 24P or 24PA footage in the camcorder? (Or any problems with playing back any of those other frame rates or features from the DVX)
*Are the battery and A/C charger compatible with the DVX batteries and A/C charger?
I would greatly appreciate any suggestions, comments, corrections, mockings, whatever things you need to say to me!
Thanks all!
There will be no problems playing it back. It's on the mini dv tape, it'll play the same on any mini dv device.
Don't know about the battery issue. Post your findings though, I'm using an old sony as my deck, but I was looking at getting this one to use instead.
Get it at B&H? You definitely can't beat that price.

I'm using one now as a deck. No problems with different types of footage. The included battery charger doesn't seem to work as well as the DVX included charger. I have had no luck using it as a back up charger for the DVXuser batteries. But I haven't tried to figure out why they don't seem to charge in it. It may just be extremely slow. The charger unit uses a plug to power the camera instead of sliding a battery plate into the battery holder. The video out is delicate - requiring a three conductor mini jack to RCA type adapter - no S-video out so that may affect your decision about using its signal to drive your monitor.
All that being said, I've been using it for several months now with satisfactory results. I think it is a good investment in saving the heads on my DVX.

Others have gotten this camera to work but the one I bought never provided timecode for my editing software so I returned it. As also mentioned it doesn't have s-video support so quality is a bit lower when using it as video out converter to TV or monitor.

I got it at Wal-mart for $350.
Is the timecode thing a bit issue?

Time code is useful if you want to log your dailies and selectively capture using a batch capture part of your program. You can also easily re-capture your footage. if you do a cpature now then you'll have to capture most of the tape or watch it as it goes.

I think that NTSC cameras generaly are DV in/out but PAL cameras, the lower end ones, are sometimes just DV out . . . just a note for those PAL guys out there meaning to make the same move . . . I had to upgrade to a GS15 to get DV in/out as all the more basic models didnt have it!

Well I'll try it and hopefully it won't be too much trouble.
bilgami,
Are you talking about Final Cut Express?
If you are, I'll just let you know that I have it and the JVC camcorder that I used to use worked fine with it. I think I might have used a Canon with it also.
It should work well with anything.

I've been thinking of doing this too--good to have as a backup camera as well. Shall we stick with Panasonic or go to a Sony, is my question?

I'd assume that a Panny Camcorder would work the best with the DVX but I have nothing to back that up or to say that a Sony camcorder wouldn't do just as good of a job.

Is it just dv out or is it both ways.
I would think that it would be both in and out.
Do you like Avid xpress pretty well?
Have you ever tried final cut for Mac?
What is your most favoritest editing software?

I have been through numerous cameras and brands trying to find one that would allow timecode and post to a monitor for output to VHS. Panasonic pro division did not know which cameras are compatible.
Just tried my 4th camera from Circuit City, it is a panasonic pv gs15. the timecode worked on the demo model at the store but the one I brought home new did not run the timecode. Apparently the differenent models read different lines on the tape and now it seems it varies by camera.
If any one is using a mini DV camera that will display timecode I would love to know about it. Also tried the panasonic 120 model as well as sony and canon.

But for simply doing a "capture now" or "capture clip", it will work just fine right?

What about printing to video? Is using a cheap cam as a deck not the way to go if you want to print to video?

You should be able to print to video fine since it's a digital copy and not using most of the camera for the copy.

Well glad to hear it!
My friend and I are editing a film between our two Avids. He is trying to use a Panasonic PV-GS9 as a deck for his Avid Xpress Pro HD. The 24PA footage play out via Firewire but does not show timecode. I know there is timecode on the tape but it will not read it.
As an experiment, I tried recording some standard (30i) footage on one of the tapes and the camera created timecode no problem. Also, that timecode was readable with Avid.
So does anybody know of any tricks to get this camera to display the previously recorded 24PA timecode? Perhaps an update to the camera's firmware?
Thanks,

as a genral rule. i dont think that any of the panasonic GS series of cameras will read the DVX timecode. you can have the cameras display timecode by changing the menu settings for display , they will generate their own timecode, but will not read it from a tape recorded in the DVX. for this reason , when it was still available alot of people buoght the pani PV-DV103 or other PV-DV series cams.. they all seem to work fine with the DVX timecode and also have a compatable battery and charger.. as should all pannies casue they use the same battery type. anyway.. im not sure whats available now, but just lettibng you know that I believe its the entire GS series that will not work with DVX timecode.

I had no luck with the GS-9. DVX tiemcode doesn't come through so even though you can capture without timecode it wasn't worth it. Sony TRV cameras seem to work fine reading the DVX timecode.
