Hello,
I am a documentary filmmaker and do not always have the luxury of "ideal lighting." I have been shooting with the DVX100 for the past year and love the 24p mode. i am about to start a new project and thinking of trading in my older 100 for the 100A JUST for the ability to use the gain in 24p mode.

I am curious if anyone has had poor results with the gain adjust in 24p mode before I spend the cash and time.

I appreciate any education you can throw my way!!

peter,

You can use gain in progressive modes with the DVX100A, it adds noise, but it does work. The DVX100A also adds other features that I find useful such as the peaking feature, one of the reasons I upgraded to the A.

The peaking feature basically makes the viewfinder image much sharper and what is in focus will stand out as being the sharpest of everything else in the frame. It is a focussing aid and I would be lost without it. This peaking does not change what is being recorded, just enhances the display.

I don't recommend you use the gain in 24p unless you are going for an ultra-grungy look and don't care about the quality for the shots you'll be using it.

I used it myself a few days ago for the first time and, although the subject is quite visible, the shot is unusable for me.

Try adjusting the shutter to a lower speed instead of adjusting the gain.

But again, I'd upgrade just for the peaking feature alone.
