i just got my DVX about 4 days ago, i have shot about 30 mins of tape so far, but my hour meter is already at 4 hours? i thought the meter only measured time that the head were recording or playing back? i'm using my old camera for capturing the footage so its not from playback. i checked the manual but it didn’t really help me at all. anyone want to explain the hour meter in more detail?

It counts when the heads are engaged, not when they are in use. There was a thread about this not too long ago. Try searching for it.

yes, I ran a few tests on the DVX re the hour meter:
the meter "ticks" whenever a tape is engaged in the
mechanism or when a drive function is active (rew, ff)
i.e. even when your camera is in pause mode, the hour
meter advances (which is ok, as the tape is engaged, the
head is spinning and taking some wear and tear.
Solutions? Not many, one might be to rather switch off the
camera when not shooting than let it go into pause.

Joachim,

What about standby. I have mine set to go into standby, as opposed to pause, and I don't think my hour meter runs then. If so, I believe i would have many more hours.

right, when in standby, the meter doesn't run
