I realize that this is going to at first seem like a crazy question, but I need to know the best method to revert 24PA back to 60i and yet get the very best final product in 60i.

My problem: Several months ago, I did an interview that I shot in 24PA with an Anamorphic Lens. The footage looks great. But now I want to complete the project, and the cutaway shots, and the rest of the wedding is going to be shot in 60i.

I know that I don't have a problem when shooting in 24P to use 60i since the pulldown is 29.97 but because I shot this footage that will need a 2:3:3:2 pulldown for 23.98, what is the best method to get back to 60i?

One of my thoughts was to capture the 24PA footage using the advanced pulldown, then dump it back out to tape then recapture the same footage, but this time using the standard pulldown and 60i.

Does this make any sense, or should I just capture the 24PA footage and treat it as 60i right from the get-go?

thanks for any help on this,

eric

Yes.

Besides, you don't capture with any specific pulldown. Pulldown is removed later, on the 24p timeline.

Hi David:

In FCP, you do indeed set your pulldown prior to capture.

If I have this straight-

If you have not edited any of the 24p stuff yet, I would just capture the 24p material as 60i and it will intercut just fine with the other (non-24p footage). The 24p already has pulldown inserted on tape by the cam and is for all intents and purposes already 29.97 (same as other non 24p material).

If you already EDITED the 24p footage (edited in 23.98 timeline from 24PA footage with 2:3:3:2 pulldown removed) then you do need to figure out a way to convert that into a 29.97/60i format to edit with the new stuff.

It seems like you should be able to play the 24p edited clips back out to the DVX in 29.97 mode (which would then record it as 29.97) then recapture- but I've never tried it. Give it a whirl and see what happens.

Or you could use something like "Magic Bullet" to convert your 60i footage to match your 24p footage.

Good Luck,
Jon

i would remove the pulldown, and edit the 24pa as true 24p.. then output it in a finished file/s with inserting a 2:3 pulldown instead for smoother playback. then just take those file, and put the into your 60i timeline.
