I have a Pelican 1550 for my 100A and Senn shotgun, but I don't think it's going to fit under the seat or in overhead bin of airplane. What should I do:
Check the case as baggage? (Horrors!)
Pack the camera in a carry-on bag with plenty of clothes to cushion it?
FedEx it ahead of me?
Buy it a seat of its own? (Joke)

Powerdog,
I was in the same situation about two months ago (didnt have the 1550 but a large case nontheless) I ended up getting the Pelican 1510. It worked perfect as its created specifically for the airline carryon specs and it fit under the seat no problem...
I decided to spend the money on this "travel case" because:
1. I just couldnt see checking it as baggage (good thing too cause on the way back Laguardia sent my luggage 2 days after they sent me back home to detroit)
2. I was so worried about it getting knocked around or kicked in a soft bag
3. Rush from EVS recomended it for my situation and of course gave me the dvxuser discount!

Looks like the Pelican 1510 is a great case. Vinnie03, did you get yours with the padded dividers, or the foam (and then cut out appropriate areas for the cam, etc)?

Not on EVS website. Skips from 1500 to 1520.

check the case as baggage - but not with your camera in it.
carry it on. keep a batt on it so that you fire it up at security - they'll want to look through it
i've bought a seat for cameras in the past. it was always fun to buy tickets under the name of Ike Gami.

Invader_J,
I got mine with the foam then I made the appropriate cutouts. I know I have a photo around here somewhere of how I did my case, I'll try to find it later and post it. But it worked out really nice. Now I do have some tearing going on in the thin areas I cut out, but a little glue will take care of that, just haven't had the time!
powerdog,
Yeah I know they dont have it listed and I'm not sure why, but just give them a call and ask for it, they sold it to me, so I'm sure they still sell them. I have also found that for anything I buy from EVS now, I like to call, the knowledge and advice is worth it!

I have a Pelican 1520 with the soft bag insert which works great. Meets airlines size requirements but I haven't flown with it yet.

Most airports want camcorders taken out of their bags/cases before they go into the X-Ray machine these days. Not just for laptops anymore.

I've never had to open up my camera case or power it up, but recently they haver been checking it for bomb residue on all the handles or latches.
I've been flying with as many as 36 cases over the last 20 years. Usually about 6 to 10 cases on a trip. Betacam or Arriflex cameras. Not one damaged piece of equipment yet, knock on wood. One delay of about 4 hours. No lost bags. I never hand carry my camera, big pain. On smaller planes they will take your hand carry bag and check it anyway. No troubles yet. Lost bags and damaged bags do happen but it is VERY infrequent. Flight cancellations are the bigger concern these days when on a schedule. The airlines have gotten stingy about flying with a light load.

I have flown with my dvx-100a a bunch of times, I use a hardig stormcase and I live near the hardig factory so for around $20 they custom cut the solid foam for me.
I wouldn't check my camera.
Goto the airline websites and see the sizes for carryon and find a hard case like the hardig stormcase or the pelican.
I have used my porta brace soft bag but i was a bit worried.
Fwiw, it did seem that the people at the airport did recognize the portabrace bag and it was no problem at all getting through their checkpoint.

Pack the camera in a carry-on bag with plenty of clothes to cushion it?
That's what I did. :) A semi-stiff Samsonite carry-on with foam rubber on the bottom and a rolled t-shirt on each side of the camera.
No probs.

Invader_J,
Here's the photos I promised a while back of my setup. While it is limited on how much you can fit in there, I managed to get a lot in I think! :)

I've flown with mine a few times, just put it in the overhead bin in the panasonic stiff bag (orange and black one). Was never a huge fan of the bag, but I'm stuck with it now, and so far so good (it's gone to LA twice and Australia once).
No one has asked me to take it out for xray

Since we are on the subject airlines I thought I would throw this out.... Southwest will let you pre-board if you have camera equipment as your carry on. I'm assuming other airlines would let you do the same...?

how are the tapes stuck there?

It looks like a velcro strip.

Yep, it's a velcro strip! I was really in a bind needing to carry about 20 tapes but only able to carry my case around with me. So, I had to improvise. I have about 25 plastic cases with velcro on them that I refil with new tapes. It really works out great.

I flew for many many hours with my Kata Panda backpack. It fits right underneath the seat in front. A little uncomfortable, but, I know for a fact no one is tampering with my gear while I am asleep.

Hey Folks
I have the Kata Shell-03 camera case. It is a soft exoskelton like case. Not too big, but that it why I like it so much. I can hold 4 bats, five tapes, charger, some filters, wireless mic, lens pen, and I am good to go. Everything else I need is in other cases, but I can carry this and another carry on no problem. I find it size great for always keeping the camera near me. And the shell is hard enough to protect it from swinging into things, or small clunks.
