Well, Brandon. Best of luck to you on this one then.
Will Larry be inking this one for you as well, or will he be focusing on "featuring-out" Checkmate?
Bring on the details. Looking forward to it.

Thanks to all, and I just wanted to put this from the Checkmate thread, in case people were wondering what the heck happened...
Here is the BIG announcement... Larry, and I as well as my producer Daniel feel that Checkmate is viable material for a longer film, possibly a feature. Therefore we are going to be working on another film for this dramafest. This announcement comes as a first to everyone, including the cast and crew. I apologize, but I had to keep it under wraps... But check out the thread for our NEW entry... "Broken Shadows"!

Instead of updating the thread through posts... I'll be modifying the first page with updates, etc. during the process. I am quite excited about this film. A synopsis and tagline should be up tomorrow. I will also be looking at some locations and getting some ideas on cast as well. Thanks.

coolio brandon. I think that's how a lot of features are made. developed stories that in no way could fit within 6 minutes.
good luck!

Thanks Justin... yeah, Checkmate was just too much for 6 min. We are striving to make Broken Shadows fit just right into the time alotted :)
Larry Rutledge
11-14-2006, 09:24 AM
It wasn't easy to turn loose of CHECKMATE after having spent so many hours with the script, but in the end I had to agree with Brandon that we were trying to cram too much story into too little time. I'm excited about the future of that project, could turn out pretty cool.
But now, back to BROKEN SHADOWS. I am very excited about this project as it is a story idea I have toyed with for almost a year now, but didn't have the motivation to sit down and write it. Now I have that motivation and I'm anxious to see how it turns out :)
Peace,
Larry
jeremytuttle
11-14-2006, 10:21 AM
Yeah, I agree that if it works as something longer then why hack at it into something that might not work or at least won't work as well (did you guys consider still making it but just not competing?). I love the new title, good luck with the new project.
Larry Rutledge
11-14-2006, 10:24 AM
Yea, we did consider making a longer, non-compete form of CHECKMATE. The problem is because I was trying to condense as I wrote it would need to be expanded for a longer form.
We are already at 15 pages, and it would easily expand to 30 for a decent short. So we are currently playing with the idea of turning it into a feature.
Ki-Ki
11-14-2006, 10:42 AM
So are you guys getting a new cast, crew, etc? Staying the same. Need more. What about the old cast or crew?
Brandon Rice
11-14-2006, 10:48 AM
Lots of our crew remains the same, as well as much of our cast... David is still in a lead role in the film, and we've approached Melissa Pollard (from Smuggler's Ransom) for a part in the film.
Charli
11-14-2006, 10:48 AM
Larry - embrace brevity - lol.
Brandon Rice
11-14-2006, 10:49 AM
Yes, listen to the wise words.... :)
Larry Rutledge
11-14-2006, 11:03 AM
HA HA...yea Charli...I hear ya. And I agree, in film brevity is the word of life. However, brevity is somewhat subjective, depending on how much story is being told (if that makes sense).
The problem we had with CHECKMATE is the concept/idea we came up with contained too many parts to fit within the time restraints. To cut it down would mean removing elements of the story which would change the dynamic of the story, and would require extensive re-writes to accomplish. The reason I say it should be longer is that there is enough story elements to carry a longer piece and so shouldn't be crammed into a shorter form.
Though this idea was originally born as a feature idea, I am starting out by cutting it down to a small core story/concept/idea that I can write into a shorter form...I think :)
Hope I made some sense in there somewhere

Well, the original story idea was something I had intended to make into a feature. But it got pushed to the backburner and nothing has been done with it. I felt I could pull a nice, 6 minute core story out of the longer idea...I hope I was right about that :)
very interested to see how you put this into a 6minute short :) I'm sure Brandon is interested to see how I put this into a 6 min. short, as well :) Actually, now that I think about it...I'm interested to see how I put this into a 6 min. short :)

Thanks, for me taglines, loglines, and synopsis' are harder to come up with than the actual script. So I try to make myself work them out first, before working on the script. Primarily because it forces me to flesh out what the core story element/theme is which, hopefully, will drive the script to follow that theme.
Glad you liked it...hope you like the story too :)

Me too, I pound my head trying to some up a story in a slick, thought provoking synopsis and tagline. Usually it ends up no better then, "its about this person that does some stuff and then it gets crazy". I like your method, I think I'll try that next time.

Just finished draft 1 and sent it off to Brandon. Not sure what I think of it yet (it usually takes a day or two before I can objectively critique my own stuff). Hopefully B-Dawg will like it, but we'll have to wait and see.
Now, I better get started on the outline for Jason's script...gotta get something to him tomorrow (when it rains it pours...anyone else want a script?) :)
Forgot to mention...only 4 pages http://www.nrestudios.com/images/smilies/emote_woo.gif, so definitely room to grow. Also, only two locations and 4 actors (a zero-budget director's dream :) ... if you don't count the extras it calls for)
Larry Rutledge
11-15-2006, 03:30 PM
Ok, just read it...I don't know if I like it. :undecided Hopefully it's just too soon for me to be reading it...come on Brandon, my insecurities need a little re-assurance that I'm at least on the right track.
In reading it again (I know, I shouldn't be doing this to myself), I think I may have been TOO conscious of the time limit. Perhaps I cover too much ground in too little time. Fortunately, I am only at 4 pages now so I'll be able to increase it quite a bit.

Well, I didn't get the "Woah" or "I really like/love this" that I was getting with CHECKMATE, so I think my instincts were right. This isn't there yet.
Welp, back to the drawing board...at least there is something on the drawing board to work with now.

Ok, got a second draft to Brandon last night. This one was 6 pages and I think is closer to where we want to go, but I'm still not happy with it yet. We're getting there, though (I think).
This morning I'll be working on Jason's script, hope to get a nice draft to him by mid-day, then I'll return to BROKEN SHADOWS while I wait for Jason's notes :) This should prove to be pretty interesting, switching from one story to the next, might be what the mind needs to get fresh perspective on one project while working on the "other" project.

The last couple days my muse has been in a coma or something :Drogar-BlackEye(DBG The couple drafts I have done for BROKEN SHADOWS so far have been mediocre at best. I think I found the story ok, but I'm not telling it well enough. It is still lacking some great visual elements.
Yesterday afternoon, however, I forced myself to work on draft 1 of RE-BIRTH. The beginning was very hard, but after a few pages I started getting into a flow, I think the muse was waking. So, hopefully today I can find those visuals and get a strong draft of BROKEN SHADOWS done.
The real challenge is that I know the story I want to tell, and I have a lot of ideas on how I want to tell it, but the six-minute time limit affects how I do that...and I'm glad. I like being forced to tell a complete story in such a small amount of time, because it teaches me to not waste time on a longer project. Just because a feature has 100-120 minutes of screentime doesn't mean I can be lazy with the storytelling, instead it should have 100-120 awesome minutes of visual storytelling, peppered with accenting dialog.
Anyway, that's the update for this morning. The plan is to have a solid draft done before the end of the day.

Hey Larry, go find a nice park or something and get a change of pace. That might help! I was watching Jay Leno last night and his guest was Emilio Esteves, who's been working on a script for about 6 years. It's about the assasination of JFK. Anyway, he said his brother, Charlie Sheen, told him to just drive to get away - that might help him overcome his writer's block (which had been going on for about a year). So he drove about 150 miles and stopped at a random hotel. When he stopped at that hotel, the front desk lady had actually been at the same Ambassador hotel, right where JFK got shot. Cool story I though... :)
Larry Rutledge
11-17-2006, 11:14 AM
Thanks tommy...good suggestion. I do try to "get away" somewhere peaceful when I'm trying to think out a story/plot idea, it definitely helps.
Driving is not a good solution for me because I already spend 4 hours a day on the road commuting for work. So it increases stress, rather than reduces it, for me :) But for those that don't deal with long, traffic filled, commutes driving can prove to be a way to relax and think.

11-17-2006, 04:48 PM
Well, the plans changed slightly. Since I knew Brandon was busy all weekend shooting Captain Fundraiser, I used the time today to get a solid draft to Jason for RE-BIRTH...and I think, other than a few tweaks here and there, we are nearly there.
Now this weekend, while Brandon's shooting, I'll get back to BROKEN SHADOWS. Brandon had a nice idea for the opening visual and I've started implementing that...I think it adds that "something" that was missing from the first two drafts. Also inspires me for the rest...I think this next draft will be pretty solid (I can feel it in my bones...now if it would just come out of my fingers  )

I'm glad to hear that your progress is looking up with Broken Shadows Larry.
I just finished reading and reviewing the 2nd draft for Re-Birth. I am very pleased on the whole. Larry is great. I think another small revision and it is going to be there. Of course, it could never be finished and one could always go on revising and revising, but I feel like Larry is giving me some good stuff, that I couldn't have done on my own, and that I will really be able to take and run with. Then it is up to me to turn it in to a piece of crap :)
Sorry, I think I kinda jacked your thread there for a minute Brandon. I was just trying to give some props to Larry

I'm not sure if you want feedback or not, but here it goes...
I liked the premise, but a few things bothered me:
1. The entire script was four people talking, that's it. Just talking. So, nothing really happened.
2. There was no ending.
3. I didn't feel anything for the characters, probably because the only development was through the dialogue of the four characters.
Like I said, I liked the premise, but on the other hand, I didn't totally know what was going on. Just my two cents.
Larry Rutledge
12-05-2006, 11:15 AM
Yea, which is one of the reasons why we aren't shooting it. I was preparing to do a page 1 re-write when Brandon got inspired to do the Christmas film.
Thanks for the comments...I agree with them. I think I was again trying to put too much story in too little time. I had some alternate ideas for the next draft that I think may have resolved some of the issues, but it's all a moot point now :)
But thanks for the feedback, as I still intend to take the full story and make a longer project out of it (hopefully with a few more locations, less talking heads, and more action/drama :) )
Peace,
Larry
