I'm using a friend's xl2 and while reviewing footage, discovered what appear to be "spots" that show up when background colors are dark.

These spots appear to be originating from the 20x lens. I've cleaned it, but to no avail.

Is it possible that this is a manufacturing flaw in the glass? Is there any way to get rid of it? The camera is still under warranty.

Here are some grabs indicating the spots.

Appreciate your thoughts.

Spoke with my friend, he wanted me to add:
"They behave like flares, only appearing with light at a certain angle. I've tried removing the UV filter, but that didn't do anything. Is this common?"

I've also seen these in the very first footage I shot with my new XL2 but put it down to some type of lens flare because I was shooting outside on a bright day. The weird thing is that since that initial footage I've not seen it reapear. However, I'd also be interested if anyone has an explanation for this one.

Well, I know this section doesn't get the same amount of traffic as the rest of the board, but i'm hoping that we can get an answer from someone.

Glad to hear your experience was isolated. Incidentally, there was no sunlight at all when it occured to me - it was overcast and misty/rainy.

I had a good look at my footage last night and I really doubt that it is lens flare because the spots do not move from their position as I was doing a wide pan. (BTW the footage was shot through the 20X lens.)

Do not laugh. It may be mold inside the lens elements. Not uncommon if cameras are used in a damp climate or are exposed to rapid humidity changes. A professional cleaning by Canon will resolve this situation.

Otherwise, it may be a smudge. Does not look like a dead pixel situation.

That definitely looks like dust. I am not familiar with the canon, but since it has a detachable lense, could it be dirty on the camera end?

When I work with broadcast cameras, we check "the gate" so to speak. Sometimes dust gets on the element where the lense attaches to the camera.
