Hi,

I am about to purchase a 35mm adapter (either the Brevis or Sgpro, probably with Nikon lenses) to shoot a tv movie in Malaysia, probably on the DVX102 PAL which i own.

After weeks of reseach, I still cannot tell which adapter has the "best focus"- is sharpest. This is a very important issue. I have rented the mini35 for music videos and informercials and honestly find them to be occasionally soft, no matter what. The mini is too expensive to buy in my country and I don't want to rent.

I have read that these more affordable adapters have focus and breathing problems. I have little experience using 35mm still lenses except in film school, so would appreciate it if someone on this forum who has experience with these adapters can help me shed some light. Is the quality broadcastable, or merely for indie work?

So, which adapter should I get? Also which lenses has less "breathing" problems?

Thank you in advance,
Ming

Hello Ming,

I have just updated the example footage section on the SGpro website. All the DVX100 footage is with Revision 1 of the SGpro, revision 2 is much sharper. The FX1 and HVX200 footage is with Revision 2.

I hope that helps.

Breathing issues are typical when using still photo lenses. All lenses are compromises between many factors, such as distoriton, CA, and breating, etc. With still lenses breating is irrelevent, so the still lens designers don't worry about it and focus on other factors.

Cine lenses are designed to avoid breathing as much as possible. To avoid breathing issues, you would want to get a 35mm adapter with a PL mount. Unfortunately that means $$$ for lenses.

I've been working with the Brevis using LOMO cinema lenses and an OCT19 mount. You can pick up these lenses from ebay (sometimes full sets) for relatively cheap. The 28, 50 and 85mm LOMO's I have here (35mm format) are old, but very nice. Our PL and OCT19 interchangeable mount kits are now available.

That sounds like a great option...
