save to hd

I have canon XL2. I have seen external hd in B&H catalog. Is there any brand I can use to save my footage to HD instead of to tapes. Or Do I need any video mixer and the output will go to external hd.

A Firestore will probably be the best your going to get. They are expensive though IMO, but in the long run worth it if your someone who buys high quality tapes. It will pay for itself in a year or two.

Are you saying if I use Firestore I can capture my footage to it insted of tape. Where is in the menu I can tell to save to Firestore instead of to tape. I don't remember I have seen any. Maybe I don't know what I am talking about.

Firestore is a device you have to purchase. it hooks to your Camera via Firewire and records in w/e format you choose. AVI, .mov, etc.

Its about 750 for the 40GB device. Its expensive but its as cheap as it gets for recording to a device. I think at 750 this thing could pay for itself in less then a year. I pay about $5 per tape because I try and buy top of the line for my XL2 so at 750 it will pay for itself quickly. Although for backups you'll have to resort to tapes anyways while using the firestore just in case, or backup your files onto DVD-R's.

Do you have Firestore? Where in the XL2 menu says capture to HD or to Firewire or automatically found it ?
Do you have experience with other brandname? Like Lorex L164-81 or Bosch DVR1A1081 or other brands?
Let me know.
I know some other cameras support Firestore mostly HDV camera.

The device records automatically, there is no option in the camera. you just plug it in and it works when you record lol. Nothing in the menu is needed. No I dont own one but either way they are expensive. firestore is the most well known and widely used. Its your best bet.
