I did this live shoot last year.

With a DVX (on a lock-off) along side some betakit, it worked fine.

This year it will be 1xDVX, 2XHVX + 2xlong lens DSR cameras.

The show is an evening stage peformace, very intensily lit, but with audience shots required.

I found that HIGH GAMMA worked well to flatten things out a little, boosting the darkend and allowing iris down so there aren't too many highlight blowouts.

Would this be the best GAMMA curve for this kind of show (horrendously contrasty)?

For "horrendously contrasty" you would probably be better served with Cinelike-D, but high does help you control highlights a bit better than some of the other gammas.

Hmm ... never really considered using cinelike-D in an interlace mode.

Is there any difference between highligh protection with clikeD and High?

thanks, barry - just ordered the book and DVD - looking forward to it.

There is no knee protection for controlling highlights in cine-d, but there is in high mode even though cine-d boosts the dynamic range. You just have to be more careful about overexposure when you use cine-d.
