A colleague of mine has a half dozen MiniDV tapes of HD footage that he shot with his Sony HD Handycam.

Is there a way for the HVX200 to down-convert this footage through the MiniDV deck? I'm unable to playback the video normally and am wondering if there is a setting I need to change of if its impossible to do in the first place. Thanks in advance for your help!

The HVX will not play back HDV tapes. In fact most HDV tapes have to be played back on the same manufacturers tape deck. i.e. tapes recorded on a sony camera need to be played back on a sony HDV tape deck.

As per a post by Barry in another recent thread. It is referencing dv cam's but same answer, I think:

You cannot capture HD footage from a DV camcorder. Just because the tape fits in the camera doesn't mean it can play it. It's like putting a Macintosh floppy into a PC drive -- just 'cause it fits doesn't mean it'll work.

You must have a Canon HDV camcorder in order to play back a Canon 24F/25F/30F HDV tape. You'd need a Canon or Sony HDV camcorder (or deck) to play back Canon 1080/50i or 1080/60i HDV tapes. Nothing else will work.
