Hi there,
I shot a bunch of stuff at a Bonfire festival over the weekend and my tech friend screwed up transferring my first rolls of P2 footage by only copying the files from the video folder on the p2 drive. Is there any way to still convert these to qt without the metadata?
Many thanks,

Firstly find yourself a new tech friend or at least one that understands the workflow.
Next if you have .XML files they are not the actual video files, they are only the clip files.
The video files have a .MXF extension.
To import any of this into FCP and create QT files you need the complete contents folder from the P2 card so you better hope your tech friend kept a copy of the CONTENTS folder somewhere.

Beg your pardon I meant the .MXF files were the only ones saved. Nothing else.

I think you are S.O.L.
FCP and QT need all the info in the contents folder to put it all together and add the QT wrapper.

Ok, thanks for your help.....most of the footage on those disks was mostly NG anyway, just wanted to check if they could be saved.....

The Serious Magic DVCProHD Decoder (http://www.seriousmagic.com/products/dvcPro/) comes with a Batch Converter that will take MXF files and spit out AVI or QT files encoded using DVCProHD. Borrow a PC (or install Bootcamp), and then try the trial version to see if it works it's magic (no pun intended).

hi,
thx for help with serious magic software, but I can only convert the mxf to AVI, the quicktimes come out white on the pc, and crash quicktime on my mac. Do I need an additional codec to play the qts on my mac for FCP?
many thanks (at least I can see the footage in some form now!)

They come out white on the PC because Apple doesn't include DVCProHD support in the Windows version of QuickTime, it's only part of the Mac version.
I'm not sure why the Mac would crash, though. The Batch Converter doesn't do any conversion other than put a different wrapper (a QuickTime wrapper in your case) around the material.
Do you have any luck opening the AVI files on the Mac?

I tried to open the AVI's on the mac thru qt which didn't work, then I tired VLC player which crashed. Seems I can currently only view them as AVI files on the PC. Perhaps there is a way I can convert them into qt from the PC?
thx again for help mate

I would have expected the QT files from the Serious Magic Batch Converter to be useable on the Mac. As I said, the video doesn't get re-encoded, it is simply wrapped in a QT container.
What version of QT and FCP are you running on the Mac?
Try to get a hold of Avid XPro which see's native MXF files then convert to QuickTime... cheers

I'm running version 7 of qt and 5.04 of FCP. I tried to import the AVIs into FCP but they came up blank as per qt. Maybe Avid is the answer but I can only get to an Andrenline...not sure if they're compatable.....
