(REPOST CHANGE)
Okay, i'm reposting this and this is why...
the original problem was not being able to get the 'no name' to show up on my desktop when
trying to upload my p2 footage.

thanks to everyone's help i was able to do so... with one small glitch.
only one no name will show up the first time. (i'm using two 4gig p2 cards)
if i want them both to appear,
then i've got to eject the no name, and turn off my cam (even though it says its still connected)
and then turn it back on, go thru the process again, (see below, David S's post right after this one)..
so yeah, its great to at least get both of the no names to show up,
but i'd love to get this all to run faster & smoother, rather than limping along.
thanks all _

alright so i've got 2 4gig p2 cards, a new rocstor 160g fw400 harddrive, & a macbook pro, without fcp or anything. but i'd like to upload these 5 one minute clips from the p2 cards & on to my external rocstor drive or to the macbook pro hdd for that matter. When i try to upload to the rocstor this is what i do:

1) go to other functions & click onto 1394 HOST
2) get out of that menu
3) click from mcr lamp to PC mode

the blue screen & wham "CANNOT RECOGNIZE HDD"

btw, i'm being very careful in what order i plug and unplug things, so that's probably not the problem & if it is i'm really lost....

meanwhile i've been reading all the forums i can trying to figure this out. this led me to believe that maybe i was just missing a new driver so i tried putting the p2 driver from here: onto the rocstor

https://eww.pavc.panasonic.co.jp/pro-av/support/cs/csregistp2m/ep2main/pcdriver_e.htm

now mind you, i'm using firewire, & have a new powerbook, not one with a p2 slot.

well the driver didn't help.

alright, so that's the rocstor side. as far as downloading straight to the powerbook ,
i go through steps 1-3
& then get to where you can either 'copy to hdd/format hdd/property or setup'.

that's great except only 'setup' lights up (is accesible), & that just says yes or no, and neither of
them do anything it seems.

what am i doing wrong???

please help.

on a happy note, i've got a friend who works at an indy theater in town & got to
watch the scenes we did yesterday up on the big screen, they looked great,
though i can't help thinking they'd look even better burnt to a dvd, rather than
the dv tape i eventually ended up dubbing to.

thanks -

Switch the cam to Firewire Connect mode.

Make certain you've installed the driver on the MBP.

Turn of the cam, attach the 4 to 6 pin FW cable.

Turn on the cam.

Switch to MCR mode by pusing the MCR Button once.

Then hold it down for about five seconds until FW connect appears.

In about ten seconds the p2 card mount.

Roscor??????

Never heard of it.

There are no drivers involved if you are connecting a Firewire drive directly to the HVX200 in IEEE HOST mode. You must, however, have a SBP2-compatible hard drive.

Chances are the hard drive is not formatted using FAT32.

The good news is that the camera can format the drive for you -- the details are in the manual.

Thanks David and THoff -

the details may be in the manual, but that's not helping much, so i appreciate your help! as far as putting the camera into "connect firewire" mode - is this called something different? i can't find it anywhere, or in the manual.

how do i put it into "connect firewire mode"

I am doing the other things you mentioned david,
with the responses noted...

and i have checked, and the firewire itself is working.

oh, and the hdd is called a Rocstor, not a Rocsor.

thanks again.

Please download the manual from

ftp://ftp.panasonic.com/pub/Panasonic/Drivers/PBTS/manuals/OM_AG-HVX200.pdf

and check out the instructions on page 84 and 85 -- everything you need is on those two pages.

and i've been pouring over page 84 and 85 for 2 days now. following the instructions down to the letter. i'm completely stumped.

Turn on HVX200
Menu
Choice 9 - Enter
Other function
PC Mode
1394 Device
Hit MCR Button
At New Screen Hold MCR Button down until 1394 Connect appears

If you are connect to Mac desktop via firewire cable "NO NAME" should appear on the desktop in about 10 second.

Option drag to create copy.

Wait until copied.

Then drag the original NO NAME volume to the trash.

Once the icon disappears, turn off cam.

Remember, drag the original NO NAME mounted volume to the trash, not the copied one.

This is really covered extensively in these forums and the manual

and i've been pouring over page 84 and 85 for 2 days now. following the instructions down to the letter. i'm completely stumped. Are you trying to connect the external drive directly to the HVX? If so, is the drive SBP2 compatible? Is it formatted using the FAT32 file system? If it isn't formatted using FAT32, then the drive cannot be used as-is. On those same pages in the manual are instructions on how the camera can format the drive.

TH:

I think the OP is trying to either transfer to the HD directly from cam, or copy to the Mac desktop.

I know, that's what the "CANNOT RECOGNIZE HDD" message from the camera is about. Pages 84 and 85 provide all the answers, but if the drive is not SBP2-compatible and formatted using FAT32, the camera won't recognize it.

I'd be surprised if there are still non-SBP2 drives out there, so I don't think that's the problem. More likely the drive is formatted using HFS, and if amber followed the instructions on how to format it using the camera, I think this whole thing would go away.

in the end the #2 post by david s. was the thing that
solved the problem
(firewire connect)
fired right up you might say...
so what exactly was i doing wrong? the instructions
on 84 and 85 say to put it in 1394 HOST mode,
not 1394 DEVICE,
like david said to do,
which solved the problem.
obviously i'm missing something, but what exactly?

thanks again.

HOST mode is for offloading material directly from the camera to a hard drive.

DEVICE mode is for connecting the camera to a computer.

I made the initial mistake of being in firewire host mode
It formatted two of my hardrives which had LOTS of personal files I very much wanted to keep including photos, past projects, and my music collection. Do not use host mode unless it is a p2 only harddrive with nothing on it.

I am still kicking myself in the ass.

Even when in HOST mode the camera won't format a drive unless you tell it to, and confirm your intention.
