(ps... If I can't help in the scoring, I've got a TON of composer friends that are all for the challenge.
(they just don't know it yet)) (of course if Sid, Herman, and Leo aren't busy scoring films )

Sweet! Just checked out your site. I like your style. I'm in. I'm going to be entering the fest with something. Have no idea what yet, but would love to have a composer with DVXUser fest experience along for the ride.

Hey Edgen,

Sweet stuff. I definitely want to work with you in the future and I hope we can get you to come over to the next L.A. DVXUser gathering to be held at Chili's.

Great banner. Gotta hand it to you, as you are a class act.

Ey Edgen,

How are you doing? Good luck with the scoring/work on your Dramafest films! :-)

Cheers,

There's a DVXuser gathering here in Laugh Land and I didn't even know about it? :) Damn. I must be out of the loop. Ya, whenever there's another meeting, I'd like to come out. (as long as it's not during rush hour or in compton. Whichever comes first)

Thanks Sid! I'm sure you'll have your hands full from the fest too.

Hey Stud, how many total are you looking to score!?!

Oh, BTW, when I said you'd have 2-3 weeks ... oops! We're going to be shooting January 13/14, and will hopefully have a locked edit within 3-4 days after that. So you should have at least a solid week, but probably not much more.

Still though, knowing it's going to be MOSTLY longer notes, etc. it should be easier than the 2-3 days you had with the more technically challenging HorrorFest.

Going to listen to your other mp3, while I surf DVXuser ... just cuz I love 'em so much.

BTW, you read the script yet for WHERE SILENCE FALLS?

Norm Sanders

Norm, I'm thinking I can probably take on at least 4 or so. It really totally depends on when everyone gets me their final film. If it was anything like the last round I'm planning on being a hermit again for the month of Jan. I had absolutely no social life and but was loving every bit of it.

Thanks guys for the wonderful comments. Heck, if you think someone will be using those tracks, it doesn't hurt to ask to score a custom project. I'm thinking I can do 1 short in one day and have two days for final revisions. Now.. making all the OST sound unique and on their own will be the biggest challenge. Not to mention cross breeding the sounds. (working on one project and having the same chordline overlap to another)

cheers and thanks again!

J/K ... I actually all those mp3 links he's got up, saved 'em to my desktop, and have been playing them all on a continuous loop for the past 2 hours in my office. Just need a warm blanky now & a glass of milk ... oh, and some fresh baked cookies would be nice. :)

Yup! Thanks for finding me Geoff :)

Norm... if you want to feel all cozy inside.. i'm making a christmas album and finished the first track last night. SOOOo... maybe I'll get it done before the big day. (specially at the rate I'm going so far)

http://edgen.hostpaw.com/edgen_christmas_what_child_is_this.mp3

Ya.. it's gonna be an "Edgen Christmas" :) (what can I say... I love some of those tunes) "Little Drummer Boy" is going to be friggin' epic!!

GMT - 09:25 Saturday Morning = Sux

I loved the first one of your xmas songs the most. And I love the way they sort of .. kicked into Epic Mode, if you know what i mean.

And I also listen to his music when im writing or designing a storyboard. Its something bout it that just gets you in the mood or helps you visualize.

Anyway, keep knocking them out. I'll sure be one to listen to them.

Norm Sanders

hi edgen, loved your music demos on your site. what software do you use to create it? do you know a good source where i can get some great loops or cinematic sounds from? i'm using soundtrack pro.

filmboy... Thanks man! I use gigastudio (along with lots of samples) and SONAR as my midi sequencer.

One place that I've always referred to is: www.soundsonline.com they've got some great sound libraries at really good prices.

Norm.. changes.. Ya, you know the part when the FBI agent asks who killed the guy and the blonde girl is about to reveal that she's actually the killer, ya.. I thought that was a little cliche.... Ya know?

OOh.. OOOPS!!!!! heheheh wrong script. sorry. ;)

(seriously, nope, I think you guys got it nailed down pretty good. Perhaps add one last twist at the end)

Cool, that'd be awesome. You're picking some serious winners to score.

O Holy Night is definitely lots of folks' favorte, just because if for no other reason than the sheer passion & raw energy that can go into it for the lead vocal. :)

That's true Norm, it is a great piece to sing. I found a nice arrangement of it and sang at our church a couple years ago, now it gets requested every year. :) It has a nice range to it and definitely lot's of passion.

Thanks Justin...I'm starting to get into the holiday spirit, and that's always a good thing :)

Norm,

no way! You don't have to get off your duff. Just enjoy the streaming music and when you hit your multimillion dollar film and you need a composer... Keep me in at least your top 3 picks. :)

I'm Looking to grow with all you guys. Not only me as a composer, but as a team of composers with everyone here. I want to get to a point if I cannot do a project, I'll know enough people to point a director to and say... "Dude.. this is your Dude." :)

So ya, Till then, enjoy. OOH, funn lil info. I gave a CD with some of my new christmas tunes to my boss today, (which, I work for x-raydogmusic.com ) and he's said that some clients were actually looking for christmas music, so who knows... maybe you'll hear one of these tunes in an upcoming Holiday Trailer :)

Heylo everyone! Just wanted to touch base with you guys on your dramafest films and wanted to see who all still needs me for their project. I know some of you dropped out because you wanted the film to longer, or time constraints. I probably have a slot or two open if anyone else still needs a composer for their project. :)

5 as of now. 3 solids. possibility of 6. and/or give or take a few stragglers that come pleading for last minute help. :)

the key is to make all of them sound different. Holy Smokes here comes the reverbage!!! For this fest, I'm going to try out a few variations of my strings and horns and see if that does some justice. Panning the instruments will possibly help too.

/j

Brandon Rice
01-17-2007, 01:57 PM
Hopefully your comp. will not have problems too ;)

Actually, I meant to ask, what do you use for your scoring, MAC, PC, what programs?

Hope some of these Q's are helpful to everyone else here as well.

Edgen
01-17-2007, 02:04 PM
well, the problem with the crash with your score was that I had soooooo much going on at once and it couldn't handle the load. I highly doubt we'll have an Epic Drama of epic proportions on this round. I'd imagine everything to be pretty minimal. Easy for my computer to pump out.

software.. I use Gigastudio3 (Orchestra) as my sampler house. Then, I use Cakewalk's Sonar to activate all the lil' on/offs of the MIDI notes to play the instrument libraries that are loaded within gigastudio. Currently, i'm running a 1.8 mhz winXP PC machine with 2 gigs of RAM. Audiophile 24/96 and sheer luck.
I can't afford a new machine at the moment, so you guys hurry up and get some decent budgets for your films!!! heheheheh :)

/j

Brandon Rice
01-17-2007, 02:06 PM
Got it. Yeah, an upgrade is definitely in order for you! I'm working on getting a DECENT budget my friend :) working on it ;)

So Justin, do I understand that you won't be entering this time for Dramafest?

Didn't you have two for horrorfest? I guess if you did, then that gives you a pass, in addition to all of the scores you're composing for everybody else! Ha!

Love your stuff. Keep up the great work!

Robert,

Ha! yUp. I had two films in the horror fest. But.. you never know. I've still got two weeks to go and I've got access to a DVX. You never know what I'll pull out of the wood work on this one. It all Depends if my friend comes up from Sand Diego to LA to visit. I told her if she did, I would put her in a short film. More Specifically... "A DramaFest Short Film" :)

I'm ready to start watching these things.

Thanks for the kind words!

Yeah, Justin's got raw emotion to his music. Some of it I can listen to & nearly brings tears in some spots ... then again, I'm just a big 'ol pansie anyway, lol.

For those who don't know it, the first two cues in the BTS video for our short (which Justin will be scoring) are from his submission when I asked composers to basically audition for our SPARROW short. I know it's almost pretentious to ask folks to audition for something they wouldn't get paid for, but we knew we were going to do more than just a 6 minute HeroFest entry.

Anywaaaaay.... we ended up going with another composer for that one, because Justin was looking to be BUSY with that festival, and I was concerned about availability, etc. blah, blah, blah.

BUT ... I LOVED his submissions, and especially the longer one was one that just stuck in my head ... it had a theme, and a BEAUTIFUL one at that. So I was extremely pleased to test those cues out for the BTS and they worked wonderfully for it.

And above all, thanks Justin for letting me use those three songs/cues for the BTS video ... without it, it would just be a stupid talking head video with some random clips thrown in.

thank you norm! Ya, I gave it my valiant effort I suppose for sparrow. The current score for that film is amazing so you definitely won in those regards.

I've still got a LOT to learn in scoring films but I know i'm learning something new with each and every one of them. Hopefully after these next set of films I'll venture off into the ska world. uuuhhe. no.

HA!!! Justin, I LOVE the new banner of yours ... VERY cool! You & your graphics, music, etc. U just rock, dude. Thanks for the phenomenal score for WHERE SILENCE FALLS.

Oh, and I'm at PDX airport right now, but I'm going to QUICKLY download these scores. I'll tell you a little secret; I leave my laptop on all night long in the hotel & let your music loop over & over. I'll stop at that & not go into how it's like you're right there in the room with me, cuz that would sound uber gay, lol!!!

Anyway, looking forward to listening to all these scores throughout the week!!
