Ok.. I have a HVX202EN (Pal) and 2 x 8 gig cards....
Now I've been dumping the P2 cards in the field with a 17" PowerBook.. (already broke I screen) which I transfer to a G5 for editing...

I've got a 5 bay P2 Memory Card Reader which is causing me issues on the G5 but not on my PC... now seeing how easy the PC seems to be handling the whole USB issues (the PowerBook is hopeless as it only allows a max of 5 watts) I'm thinking of switching to a PC for the field...

Now I guess the question is how do you guys handel DVCPRO 100 on the PC.. as far as I can tell there's no support for it...

I've been eyeing up the smallest notebooks I can find that still have a full size PCIMA card (that's going to be a whole other issue in the future) and I guess I can live with previewing on a laptop in the field (I've got Avid XPro also but there's just been too many issues with Avid and I kinda prefer FCP now ...which I then send to After Effects back on the PC)..

The ease of the PC over the Mac seems a winner as usb 120gb bus powered portable drives are cheap.. but sometimes it would be great to dump footage in AE in the field...

Thanks...

I'm not quite sure what you're asking, but many people use a cheap ($500) pc laptop as a p2 store in the field, or for live capture. You might need a bit more for live capture though. I'm not sure. Can you clarify what you are asking, please?

Define "no support".

If you are referring to QuickTime then you are correct, Apple does not include the DVCPro codecs with the PC version.

However, there are solutions that will work on the PC, including Canopus Edius, Matrox Axio, Avid Liquid, Raylight, Cineform, and Serious Magic's DVCPro Decoder. But if you are using a PC only to acquire, it's irrelevant anyway.

Yes.. probably will end up using just for in the field capture... and the yes support is referring to QuickTime.. which would make converting footage in the field useable on the Mac's.... without re-capturing...

If I go away on a 4 day shoot I alwyas start importing the footage... so I guess we kinda still need the PowerBook anyhow...

Ok.. I've updated my XPro to version 5.6.2.. Now Xpro works with native MXF files so my idea is that I'll use a PC Laptop in the field.. transfer to 120GB bus powered laptop drive (USB)...

Then transfer the MXF files to a powered firewire drive for preview and rough edits... will be interesting if FCP will see the same file names and replace the footage to DVCPRO HD Quicktime when imported to FCP on the G5 back in the studio...

The other way I guess is to get Auto Duck to convert from Avid to FCP...

Now the 17" Powerbook could stay at home....

Thanks...

Cheers
