I was wondering what zoom setting on the hvx would be equivalent to a standard 50mm 35 lens

anyone know?

Panasonic HVX Zoom range = 4.2mm to 55mm

35mm equivalent is = 32.5mm to 423 mm

That 423mm focal length 35mm equivalent is calibrated by Panasonic
for still lenses. Not sure why or why 35 isn't 35 but I asked this question
a while back and got that answer from Panasonic.

I have had a 300mm lens on an Arriflex BL4 and that was a heck of a lot
longer than the long end of the HVX-200.

I still love this camera though!

The "standard" lens for any format, whether super 8 or video or even 10x8 plate is simply that lens whose focal length is equal to the diagonal of the format.
Thus for 35mm stills, it is actualy 42.5mm, 50 is slightly "long" and is an historical accident.
For 1/3", I would think somwhere around 5.5 mm would be right, the 50mm eq being a bit longer, say 6.5mm(?).
