View Full Version : P2 Store Major Problem (Mac)
I just went on a shoot and did 9 different card dumps to the P2 store. The problem is I just can see 7 of those drives. One user, in a different thread, posted that the solution was to manually mount the drives in disk utility. Unfortunatelly, Disk utility doesn't let me mount them The disks appear on disk utility, unmounted, and say they contain information. Any solution to this problem? Is my P2 store deffective? Any help wouldd be much appreciated.

I ran into a similar situation once. I shut everything down and restarted...this includes the P2 store. After that all was good. Give it a try it might help.

Jim, unfortunatelly, that didn't seem to work. Maybe if I connect to a windows PC it will recognize?

The P2 Store has two operating modes, one for the PC and one for the Mac. It needs to be in the appropriate mode to work properly.
To switch modes, connect the P2 Store using the USB cable, and hold down the Cancel Button, Batter Level Indicator, and Hard Drive Capacity Indicator for five seconds. The USB LED will indicate the current mode, Green is for the PC, and Orange for the Mac.

THoff, the P2 store was already in Mac mode. I've been working with the P2 store for 3 months now. This is, however, the first time I come with these type of problems- I sincerely hope I haven't lost my footage- This is something that really frightens me about the P2 workflow...

I wrote that for when you try to connect it to a PC.
Jan, or Barry, any solution to this? Did this ever happen to anyone else? (Disk utility not mounting the extra drives?)

I don't use the Mac, so I don't know. This doesn't happen on the PC, this has always been reported as a Mac-only issue, so I haven't run into it.

SPZ,
Sorry I don't have a better answer for you. I did the restart thing and everything was fine and haven't run into it again. I'll ask around and see if anyone else has any helpful suggestions.
Jim
Thanks guys. I'll try to connect the store to a pc to see what happens.

I wonder if this works under BootCamp?
Just checked the P2 store with a PC. All drives mounted. There's definetly a problem on the Mac side of things...

Here's the solution. In OSX, go to:
/Applications/Utilites/Disk Utility
make sure the P2 Store is on and at least some of the partitions are mounted.
when you boot Disk Utility, you should see the P2 Store show up in the left side column. It should have 16 partitions. The first one is for the P2 Store's OS, but the next 15 are where your footage is potentially stored. Some will say "No Name" and some won't have a name. Click on the unnamed partitions and then click the 'Mount' button at the top of the window. If you do this on all 15 partitions, you'll make sure that every partition that has footage on it will be mounted.

I'm on the war path (literally, I'm Cherokee, and I'm pissed) with my beloved Apple now. The bugs in Macs trying to handle P2 data is just getting ridiculous.
PLEASE if you use FCP go to the above URL and let Apple know how bad it is and how very upset we are, ASAP! It is the most sure fire way to get Apple to move their ass!
IMHO, from trying to trouble shoot this with others, and now having the problem myself, I'm convinced it's the P2 Driver for the Mac.
Bear in mind a huge chunk of the HVX200 market are FCP users, and the overwhelming majority of FS-100 market are FCP users. Make a noise!!!!!!

It does happen to me once in a while when I connect my camera to my mac. only one disck shows up (i have two p2's). What i do is turn the camera off and on again, switch to pc connect again and Ithen my 2 disk show up. Maybe turn your p2 store on and off and see if it works.
It's much simpler, go to the Computer icon at the top left of a Finder window. It'll have the name you gave your Computer. Once you select it, you should see both P2 cards show up. Works for me every time, faster than rebooting your camera.

Ben... That is a good route. I just sent them a note. I'd say that more than half of the HVX people are Mac. Personally I don't know a friend here locally who is on the PC using the HVX....
Glad you found your footage. It happened to me one time. I know it was because while I was dumping P2 I had a couple of errors on that and had to start the dumps again because of a client who was banging on the table while we were offloading. It was corrected though when I turned on and off the P2store. I can understand your pain though.. I went through a bit of hell until they all mounted on the Mac...
Steve Jobs... here our plight!

well, i did that, Kenn, but when I pressed the mount button, my mac said "disk couldn't be mounted." Funny thing is, on the 2 unmounted disks, they had different type of format on the description: one was fat 16, and other linux. and I did nothing for this to happen.
This is a common problem with the P2 Store and I wish Panasonic would resolve it.

It's only a problem on the Mac side. This never happens on the PC. So it's either Panasonic's or Apple's responsibility to fix it. I wish they would get together in a room and vow to not leave until the problem is solved.
I strongly suspect it's the P2 driver for the Mac. So, who wrote that code, Apple or Panasonic? I know a Panny rep who said don't ever expect a single code of Apple software to be written by Panasonic, they just don't touch Apple code. So did Apple write the P2 driver?

I'm not disagreeing with you Ben, just observing. My guess is that the Panny rep doesn't know the high level decisions made about drivers.
In any case, if this is as a big an issue as the posts indicate, it's time that the companies collaborate on a solution.
After all, didn't Panasonic and Apple do the whole marketing thing back around the first of the year on FCP and the HVX200?
And aren't the disproportionate users of the HVX200 Mac-based in contrast to the general computer user base?
Lack of good support for Mac users of the HVX200 by Panasonic also has to be addressed and soon.
No Intel support for p2 store manager.
No Mac p2 reader.
p2 Store defaults to PC mode.
No p2 card Mac firmware updater.
It's getting, or has gotten, a little preposterous.
