for those who may be interested in plonking down some plastic, i received word from christine at ZGC that my A1 is shipping tomorrow, wednesday, so it'll be in my hands on thursday. apparently they have a few more units past the preorders available, so i'll give them a little plug. zgc is, and has always been, a top notch outfit.

Thanks for the info. got mine from Travis today, he knows his stuff. He said that Final Cut Pro 5.12 is the best model compatibity wise for mac users that want to achieve 24p with out installing plug-ins. The simplier the better for me. It is supposed to overnight, so I'll have it Friday! HOORAY!!!

The HDV 24F support in FCP 5.1.2 is excellent. With a fast G5 it is surprisingly snappy, and you can actually print 24F to tape too. (true HD 24p edits recorded to tape with no bandwidth wasting pulldown needed. )

I love it. :)

Excuse the threadjack...but Elton could you shed a little light on the 24f workflow. Is it similiar to working with 24p from the dvx? I'm just curious about mixing 24f and 60i in the same timeline. Any insight into this would be great.

Yeah, it's like capturing and editing 24pA from the DVX, only in HD.

You can mix 24F in a 1080i timeline by adding pulldown to the 24F material in the 1080i timeline. I use a Nattress plug-in to do it. (standards conversion) www.nattress.com

Quick questions: How difficult is it to figure out Final Cut Pro 5.12, where is the cheapest place to get it and is there any good books or tutorials for it? One last question, on your post above are you saying you can take the 24f footage back to mini-dv using final cut pro... will this play on one of those mini-dv players at a festival if you downsize the format to like 480 lines? from the 1080i

I may be wrong, but I think Apple's prices are the same for FCP anywhere you go. Unless you are a student, the price is what's listed on their site. Good books or tutorials can be found in various places from Amazon to local/large bookstores.

If you're familiar with any of the other major NLE programs, it shouldn't be too much trouble. Price? Google it. Most of the time it's the same price wherever you go.

Tutorials: Again, Google it and find a gazillion freebies. There are lots of good books too.

What I was saying is that you can record Canon HDV 24F back to Mini DV tape from the computer. (in HD) Even better, you can use the A1 to downconvert via firewire to DV and capture that for an SD master. This way you can conveniently have two versions:

--an HD edit recorded to affordable DV tape.
--an SD version in the DV format

The SD version should play from a miniDV deck with no issues. The HDV 24F version would need to be played from a Canon cam.

I'm considering moving from the FX1 to the A1. Only thing is that I have some HDV stuff shot on the FX1 and I was wondering if the A1 would be able to read the tapes from the FX1. Can anyone tell me?

Yes, it's compatible with Sony HDV.
