Another project I'm working on at the moment is a 30 minute film titled "The Corsairs" -- it is a project for class and is very character-driven. We are shooting on the DVX and using locations around campus (gotta love film school for THAT! - tons of great locations that are at our disposal!)
I'm trying to decide whether or not I should cut a snip out of this film and make it a 6 minute entry for drama-fest or if I should just go with my film the way I am now... still writing... =)
What say you all?

Kyle,
Here's recipe for sure success:
a) Cast lots of hot co-eds in your CORSAIRS project.
b) Cut 6 minute version with best of co-ed footage
c) Come to L.A. and help us make Thread The Needle and bring your co-ed outtakes
Can't miss with that approach!

I thought about that for another film we did but started having a hard time thinking of how to condense it but making it still make sense. Also the whole, "Eric" and "Erica" thing would have to be forced in there some where. Maybe somehow you could introduce another part to that some story line/mythos/world. Even possibly have a few cuts back and forth between old footage and new footage. At some point all the characters from one or the other could just meet for a second (assuming you can get the others actors back) and maybe they effect each other, but indirectly.
Kyle Stebbins
10-31-2006, 06:55 PM
i could definitely get the actors back, theyre my classmates so it works out well. - i gotta say i like mark's idea... now i just need to find some hot girls! =) not that the girls aren't hot in the CORSAIRS. anyways... maybe i can just churn something out like i did for horrorfest... i did that in two weeks, i have three months for this... on with the writing! (yes, i have some material now and it's starting to flow)
Ted - you definitely should be my spell check, screw the computer's =) i hope you dont get offended about that, lol... it's sort of an ongoing joke now! (sort of like your ladders!!!)

God that would be wonderful. I was born and raised here in Lincoln and am living out of my parents basement (i'm only a freshman) and it's cheap. the program here is really quite nice, actually. i made sure of it before i promised the university so much money... lol -- although i still am looking to transfer someday if the right school comes along and works with my budget.
lord knows i'd be closer to the connections i need...

11-02-2006, 12:04 AM
Film school is about about connections, really... If you could get into USC, that would be the best... very very hard to get into, but if you're in film school already, you might be able to transfer...
And besides, it doesn't snow here... well, it does up in the mountains!

I think they accept less than 50 people per year... I was seriously considering applying, but I went the 'make your movie' route with the short I did, Maliboo... Now I'm going to start work on my feature. I figure I've met some really cool people from here so at least now I know a few people in the industry. I've already got a DP lined up for the feature which is going to be filmed in Baja... :)

It's coming along... but I'm worred it will turn into Horrorfest where I only had two weeks! =) I decided to enter that one WAY late...
So, I have a lot more time, but I would like to use more of it more productively. Really, I need more time to focus on the script. School has got me really bogged down and my film courses have got projects of their own (The Corsairs) and I'm quite busy with that.
Thanks for the conern, Jason. Things will get back into place again. Hell, Herman Witkam is on board... THERE IN LIES MY BIGGEST MOTIVATION!

I'd say so man. I just checked out his website and he has some amazing stuff, I tested the audio system in a boardroom I was working in today by playing "Rekindled", everyone around me thought it was great.
If you need any help with hashing out any ideas for our script, PM me (that is if your cool with that, I promise I won't steal any of your ideas), sometimes it helps to just talk out loud about your ideas. I'm having a heck of a time shortening our script down. It's a hefty 10 pages which will probably translate to 8 minutes of footage:(

It's funny... if you remember from Developed, in the opening titles there is a tracking shot across some photos of a girl (who is actually my girlfriend!). That is a fun fact. On a similar note, I've always wanted to make a set of moves that had some kind of tie in with each other (like the French movies, Blue, White, and Red). You could get complicated with this or you could simply have one character in movie 1 drop a flower (like in your poster), then in movie two a different (unrelated) character picks up the said flower.

That's what I did in I.D.
Well, okay.... I did use ONE word.
I do think that it is a great approach and infact am reading a book and Hitchcock is quoted as saying once that it was a huge step backwards when the age of talkies was born. (are you boys old enough to know that term???)
Geoff_R
11-19-2006, 12:17 AM
But without talkies we'd miss so many great films. Imagine Lord of the Rings as a silent trilogy...and also, Woody Allen wouldn't have a job at all!

Hitchcock is quoted as saying once that it was a huge step backwards when the age of talkies was born. (are you boys old enough to know that term???)
Well, yeah... but remember that was about 50 years ago that he made those comments... movies have come a LONG way since then!
Herman Witkam

I do think that it is a great approach and infact am reading a book and Hitchcock is quoted as saying once that it was a huge step backwards when the age of talkies was born. (are you boys old enough to know that term???)
To quote Hitchcock again, he also once said that actors should be treated like cattle, and he (under studio executive pressure) replaced Bernard Herrmann as the composer on his film Torn Curtain, his music being 'not upbeat enough', while he was probably one of the biggest innovators of film music in Hollywood at the time!
I think a lot of depth has been added to the world of film when sound came in. Facial expressions are very important, but not everything can be made clear without dialogue. The value of music to film was proven long before 'talkies' appeared, with musicians accompanying the films in theaters. Maybe I'm just saying this because I'm a sound guy :D
Tom Marshall
11-19-2006, 03:55 PM
Sound is JUST as important as video... without good sound and music, there's a lot that wouldn't be as impactful. And music always heightens the mood in a dramatic scene. And when music is tastefully NOT added, it has a very strong impact as well.

A little bit, but it feels like a real location (Probably is). The couch shot could have been framed a little tighter to avoid some of the "clutter" the other shots (and even the couch one) might not even be noticeable when your watching the actions.

Hi Kyle, finally got through your thread - dude, shot #3 is great. I love it when the background blows out behind a nicely lit subject, just something I dig on an artistic level. Like it's not supposed to work, but does. I also wanted to mention that I like your hammering on a screenplay before going into production; I've met a handful of film-makers who somehow have come to think that the screenplay is almost unneccesary. Bizarre. I'm looking forward to your flick, your actor seems to have a nice screen presence.

Was it challenging trying to get right exposure with all of that bright snow???
Kyle Stebbins

the dvx's auto iris really helped me adjust the exposure. i would set it to auto, let it adjust itself, and then revert it back to manual so i wouldnt get any curves or jumps in the exposure.

Hey Kyle,
I'm too lazy to go back through your whole thread. Did you talk about shooting in the cemetery? If not, tell me about getting permission to shoot there.
Kyle Stebbins
01-29-2007, 09:56 PM
Yes, our lead actress (val j.) gave us the name of a cemetary where her family owned a plot. We had permission from the landowner as WELL as the owner of the plot (her family) -- in short, we had all the permission we needed and had no problem whatsoever shooting in the cemetary (save the poor sound quality, the wind was viscious) -- needless to say, we ADR'd everything for that shoot. MOS style, babay!!
actually just got finished with the FINAL CUT of the film except for Herman's score. i can't tell you how often i've been checking my inbox for herman's work. i also can tell you enough how BAD i feel for getting it to him in such late notice. when you mix together college, TTN, and my OWN movie... time is VERY prescious and scarce! i might get nailed for spelling on that one... anyways, i'm very much loving the film in it's current state.
stay tuned for more updates. this film is almost in it's complete form!!
thanks everyone! i'm sorry i havent been around the boards much in everyone else's user film threads. i've been so wrapped up in everything listed above. gonna be a rockin fest, that's for sure!!

I am impressed that the auto iris gave a correct exposure. I know with my photography I have to "cheat" the sensors when shooting in snow or around large bodies of water.

Updates: Herman sent me the first cut of his score and I found it darn near perfect. I have since recut the film to 5 minutes and 46 seconds. I don't think I could do it again if I tried (It's a good thing I had premiere set to auto-save every 1 minute). I am currently re-rendering and then will output to h.264, upload, and wait patiently for Herman to work his magic. I'm not doing anything until 6:30pm -- it's rare!! I'm spending it doing what I love most. Making movies... but more specifically... editing!

So, I just saw a final cut of Another Day without music, and let me tell you... Kyle Stebbins.com knows his sh*t. As Mark would say, "it's no Corsairs," but it's fantastic nonetheless.

Kyle, I enjoyed watching your movie. I liked the washed out look you came up with. You need to minimize the bright windows you shoot against so as not to blow out your scene. In this type of piece, you really need to give me someone to like. I'm not sure I liked anyone in the piece. The kid was a decent actor but somehow, the mother didn't quite come off as real. I would have liked to know how the father died, since you set us up for that. I would have also liked to seen the kid actually talking the dialogue that was voiced over at the cemetery. It's okay for the VO before and after the cemetery but I'd have liked to see him talking to his father when we saw him.
All in all, you did a good job on this and I'll look forward to future projects you do.

REVIEW: ANOTHER DAY
Had a good message, timeless. Pretty good visuals, sense o'direction.
I think that there wasn't time spent in developing an actual story as opposed to a snippet of life of the family right after death. I also think that the characters suffered from the lack of motivation. Where was this six minutes going? I honestly thought that I would see some kind of problem arise between mother and child, and then see that resolved by the end. Even something so cliche as over-the-father's-grave would've been satisfying.
I just needed something to go along with the strong sense of direction. Speaking of which, you got-a lot-a good shots going on, Stebbins. I liked the camera pan at the kitchen table. What happened right after made my eyes cross, and not because I'm a tech nerd or anything, but because it felt off and I didn't realize WHY until the second watch. You walked right across the line and put the mother on the wrong side of the table. It felt awkward after that.
And I know that it was your choice in framing, it felt kind of weird when the mother's head was kind of cut off during the band-aid exposition. I was kind of scared, and wanted to push the frame down a little so I'd feel better.
Serious subject, the death thing. I know I write alot about death, so it makes me feel better than I'm not the only writer worried about such a thing.
Thanks for showing, Stebbins. By the way, you had decent sound going on!

Kyle and friends:
STEBS!!!! Hey man, good job on finishing a film. I must admit that after looking at some of your screen grabs, I thought the film might have problems with the actor over-acting. I was glad when I saw that the acting was actually pretty decent. I DO think that the film was losing my interest near the end you must remember that windows are your worst enemy.
There was also a point where you crossed the line pretty hardcore, when the guy is sitting down talking with his mom in the kitchen.
I know you guys are going to get better so hurry up and get your asses out here.

Kyle! Well, I gave the honor of the first film I watched to YOU!
Nice job!
I really like the concept and story that you have. I found it moving. I especially like when the son "talking" to his father when he is going off to his new job.
The relationship between the son and mother is strong. I can feel the tension there.
I am curious if this story is about the fact that the son can't cry. I felt that it was but I didn't feel that it delivered there. I really would have liked to see the son breakdown and cry at the end. I felt that he needed to. I felt it in the scene but I didn't see it in the scene. I was left wondering if he ever did cry for his father.
I do feel that this is a story about how the son "deals" with the loss of his father. I like the way that you handle this story. Another observation that I would like to share is that I would like to have the first scene (after the titles) be a shot of the son looking over some sentimental object of his father and then the explosion between the mom and son. That's just my thought.
And speaking of the tiltes, I thought that they were clever. And I especially loved the "Another Day" reveal. I would like to just point out that as "neat" it is to have the titles on the headstone, I felt that it diminished some of the power of the headstone. To me, the headstone is a "main character" here and not just a bill board. But that is just my opinion. More inportantly with the opening shots, I felt that the mother at the stone need more headroom. ESPECIALLY when she looks up to see her son. What I would have loved here is a CU on her with tears down her face and then a CU on the son with his "dry eyes."
I thought that the actors did a nice job.
Great job, Kyle. Your film has a nice pacing and kept my attention.

I appreciate all the critiques!!
Ted - you really gave me something to think about with the headstone. the more i think about it, the more i realize you are so right. the headstone WAS a major character... and it was wrong of me to put the titles on it. i guess i just so badly wanted to give my titles an edge that i completely overlooked that. thanks for pointing that out. i also appreciate being your first watch ;)
The framing was off because at the last minute I wanted to branch out of the full-size ratio and come as close to 2.35:1 that i could. needless to say, i chopped too much off and when alex came into the room, minutes before the deadline, he pointed it out to me. by that time it was too late! :(
The blown out window was merely the product of adjusting the exposure for the actors. I found it to be particularly beautiful, however, it's a subjective topic. The natural light that flooded in from the window really cast a wonderful, soft, luminance on my subjects and I couldn't resist from keeping it all in the scene. Comments duly noted, however, as it was distraction and, i won't lie, it looked like they were in the middle of a raging blizzard. so thanks for pointing that out blaine! =)
As for crossing the line at the dinner table. I shot the scene with a dolly movement up to the table and ended up cutting that portion of the clip in post. I originally did not want to show the mother speaking in that take but it just felt so natural. After that I jumped ahead to the next shot and, without alex (my a.d.) by my side, made the decision to shoot over the wrong shoulder. We quickly became aware of this but had little time to reshoot. I'm really glad that you noticed it though. It's what makes all of us better filmmakers.
Thanks for the critiques everyone... please keep them coming.
