View Full Version : P2 Genie or P2 Log or Both for the Mac G4PB?
I'm looking for help with using the P2 Store with my Mac G4PB. Do I go with P2 Genie or P2 Log for Mac or some people have said they use both?
While I have been downloading P2 direct to FCP and off to two drives, I do have access to a P2 Store and there are times when this option would be preferable to booting up my laptop in the field. Thanks all, Cheers, Ray

The P2 Genie for Mac should be able to work with the P2 Store but you should also know that there are some severe problems with either Mac OSX or the Panasonic drivers that can cause it to not always mount all partitions, which could cause lost data if you don't make sure that all partitions have been copied over. I would definately recommend using the P2 Genie in manual mode for offloading the P2 Store.
FCP 5.1.2 has a new P2 Import window that will do what you need, no more Genie or Log. And it fixes the all the bugs with P2 data.

Ray, as you probably know, the P2 Store is USB based. Thus it's not suitable for playback/previewing of clips. So you'll still be copying the "NO NAME" volumes off to a disk regardless of the software application.
P2 Genie is geared for file management (no previewing), though I'm not sure what they do with the myraid of same name volumes P2 Store allows.
P2Log is primarily a viewer and works solidly with all formats, low overhead allows it to run on any OSX Mac. It's also often used to import "corrupt" clips that FCP will not.
The new FCP import is slick, which you obviously know already. Downsides include some difficulties with PAL formats and occassional timecode issues.
PS: Bjorn will soon be correcting the Adamski page which incorrectly states incompatibilities with P2Log and FCP 5.1.2. Imagine's Pass Through codec and files created with it peacefully co-exist with all versions of FCP supporting DVCProHD (should you be working with PAL formats).

Don't you still need P2 genie to transfer P2 store to selected harddrive? I know that the FCP update takes the place of HD log, but the genie seems to work great for offloading P2 store.

FCP is hardly a replacement for a logger. There are *many* differences in features, and HDLog is much more than a simple P2 viewer. Likewise, HDLog is not a NLE. As for Genie, it's a pretty low risk venture. I suspect you are right that it's a great workflow tool for copying and file management.
