Damn, now we have to find somebody named Eric to play the lead.
Kyle Stebbins
10-29-2006, 10:00 PM
well i believe the lead actor doesnt need to actually be named eric... but the character's name should be eric.
Mark Johnson
10-29-2006, 10:04 PM
We're purists. We insist on using actors with the same name as the part they play.
And no visual effects unless done by a guy named Eric.
Kyle Stebbins
10-29-2006, 10:09 PM
perhaps inexistence can help you... he's putting together a 12 sec. "stebbins digital" bit that i will use on my productions.
he's a great guy! plus, his name is eric! :)

10-30-2006, 05:46 AM
LOL, oh boy. Thats good... Unconveniant...but oh boy, thats good.
Oh well, there goes my crap laugh for the day. Maybe they based it on your name because they know how much it would spin you out. Or. Maybe they just love you SO SO SO, much that they want to show there affection by making everyone use your name. Aww, how sweet.

So, how are you guys planning on collaborating from opposite coasts? Movie made in one place, edited in the other, or will there actually be travel involved by one or both of you?
Jason
P.s. Best of luck to you both by the way. And everyone :) Ok, sappy moment over. Drama.

I have two trips to LA in the next 80 days. We're shooting there.
Thanks for the wishes.
Mark Johnson
10-30-2006, 12:23 PM
We've worked out a pre-production trip that involves Ted flying out here this week for 9 days. We're setting up actor auditions and will be doing some camera tests for some critical scenes. After Ted leaves we will be working on blocking and shot planning using FrameForge 3D, which is a very cool 3D storyboarding package. In theory, we should be able to put together a rough cut in 3D before Ted returns right after Christmas for the actual shoot. We hope this allows us to be comfortable with the film's pacing as well as getting some useable information on lighting/camera setups to make the shoot much more efficient.
Additionally, while Ted is back at his compound, I'll be shooting some specific technical shots. Both Ted and I are committed to making this a truly joint project with equal labor and responsibility.
We'll shoot early January and I'm delighted to announce that Kyle accepted my offer to come out and crew for us in exchange for me reciprocating on his production. After having him sign a blood oath, we revealed our synopsis and production outline and he's pumped and excited (or is a very good actor anyway). We're really excited to have his talent on board and I am hoping that other L.A.-area DVXers will come out, if even for a short day, during our shoot.
Ted Arabian
10-30-2006, 12:38 PM
Thanks Mark for elaborating on the process.
We are very, very excited about this project and this new union. I feel a lot of potential with Mark and I teaming up. (I never had to empty my PM box so many times before!) The communication between us has been intoxicating. (Hopefully when we finally meet each other in 2 days, we be just as happy.... or at least able to get intoxicated! :) Just kidding.)
And I am absolutely delighted to have Kyle Stebbins on board for this project and hope, as Mark has stated, other L.A.-area DVXers will visit during our shoot. There are many of you that I would love to meet!
Jason Ramsey
10-30-2006, 12:41 PM
Sounds awesome guys. Looking forward to it. And you alredy have like 300 views of this thread. Impressive.
Jason
Check that 200. Impressive none the less. :)
Mark Johnson
10-30-2006, 01:06 PM
There are advantages to shooting in L.A. One really BIG one is the fact that the DVX guru Brandon Rice lives at the top of the basin and it looks like he's going to help us crew too!!! Having worked with Brandon on his Smuggler's Ransom film I can't say enough how much I admire his work ethic and talent.
When I told Ted he said, "Wow, I bet Brandon has some really sophisticated ladders we can use." :)
Brandon Rice

Hey - I know a great basement you guys could shoot at in Brooklyn - it comes with it's own strawberry syrup soaked worktable from the 1930's. I think the table's name is Eric...c'mon Mark - come back to the east coast - the peoples of Brooklyn have been eagerly anticipating the return of their newest favorite creative/sentient being and are awaiting his foray into the dramatic arts, wishing him and his newest ally the best in their battle for our dramatic hearts.
break legs gentlemen!!

Jason,
I have spun tales at our campfires on Melrose, telling of the fetid squalor that we labored in and how your single-minded focus reminded me of a 16th Century Abecedarian rising above and beyond the miring filth. Would that you could transport yourself and your thespian talents here to appear in our humble opus. Alas, though, this city and its teeming masses of truculent pudenda would likely destroy your innocence. .... But what the hell, come on out and we'll do sushi on Manhattan Beach and say f*ck it all!

Jason,
are you talking about the Richard Greenberg play "The Author's Voice"?
always wondered who'd play that role in a production...and if their friends actually thought it was typecasting...
Mark,
truculent pudenda, huh? wow. i've never read something that required me to open a dictionary, and the end result still being me on the floor laughing!! you havent lost the knack - though i hope you're getting more sleep and better nourishment these days.

We sure anticipate to see your movie... :)
Jason Ramsey
10-31-2006, 09:33 AM
Smiles,
Yes, that is exactly the play I was referring to. "The Author's Voice" Mahmoud is that character. In real life, in any life. Due to his very odd & sheltered upbringing, he had a very unique outlook on things, and wrote some wild stuff as a result. Plus, like I said, he had sisters who were the mother of some of his other sisters from his father.... Yeah. That's Alabama for ya. It's not just in the movies. Except in this case it's not your typical "Redneck" He was the son of a Schizophrenic Muslim Father, and a Christian Nurse Mother.
Yeah. And my name is no longer Jason. It is Nosaj. There. Now I don't have to feel like an idiot anymore.
Thanks,
Nosaj
Mark Johnson
10-31-2006, 06:13 PM
I'm loving some of the stuff on this thread already. You guys rock. Ah, Nosaj. I like that too. I used to go by Nosnhoj, myself.
Well, Mr. Arabian arrives in Los Angeles tomorrow morning and we're hitting it hard with pre-production. We're going to be doing some technical shots and will be completely immersed with acting auditions. I am always reminded how lucky we are to have the teeming masses making their way to La La land like Lemings. We hope to snag a few of the more talented members of the pool before their dreams are crushed and they return to the QuickTrip in Des Moines.
We do have some interesting roles to cast and I'm grateful to have Ted's considerable acting experience at the table for these readings. Hopefully, by the end of next week we can have some announcements as to casting.

Yeah, its a bit of a challenge. I am working to secure the locations in as few of municipalities as possible, otherwise the permitting costs are gonna kill me. This one has a cutting pace comparable to a commercial so its gonna have one hell of a shot list. Blaine emailed me the element and scene reports this afternoon, it does look a bit daunting right now.

10-31-2006, 10:37 PM
You know, this time around why don't we organize a little party in L.A. when the films are in the can. There's got to be a ton of DVXUSERs in the basin. Being relatively new, I'm not aware if you guys have organized or gathered before. It seems like a great idea from this side anyway.

thanks for the kind words re: rekindled, I'm glad I got to paticipate, and meet wolf-man Jack and the genial Mark Johnson (who I hope will be as entertaining when you get to meet and work with him), and get into this whole DVX world - It's an awesome way for me to procrastinate, and avoid all the plays I've told myself to read...
good luck sifting thru the masses of us actors out there - hope you find ytour gems - wish I was in the greater LA area so i could throw my hat in the ring, but alas, I am quite content here in NY, basking in the glow still emanating from Mr. Stanley's general direction.

Well... it's not mine so I can't say. BUT, we do need someone to use my Nikon D70 and take BTS shots! (I know, I know... not an HVX... not even close.)
You should have seen us trying to get you guys a BTS shot. My luggage was still at the airport because my luggage went to ONT and I went to LAX (long story)... anyway, I finally said, "Hey! I've got a camera phone!" I took a couple of shots though I know that they must suck. Luckily, this guy Chris (awesome dude) had a camera. So, you guys get hot and fresh BTS shots.
And yes, I do have my luggage now!
(psssst.... Brandon, I let you touch the HVX when Mark is out looking for his sunglasses!)

Ok, here's a little report from today. Ted arrived at LAX about 10 a.m. but his luggage decided it didn't want to get off and continued flying to Ontario. Ted and I drove to our shooting location where I introduced him as a "big time director" from Boston (only a half-truth. He isn't really from Boston). We had lunch and then hit the ground running and actually got a couple key shots using the pickup and crane before ascending a rooftop to finish up the day's footage. We made the trek to Ontario and got Ted's luggage.
Tomorrow we begin auditions at 9 a.m. We take a break and shoot some quick background plates in Chino for a forensic case and then return to auditions, which go late into the evening.
The next day (Friday) we continue auditions in the morning before packing up and hitting the road for some very special footage over the weekend (Brandon is coming with us, by the way... Hey Brandon, we scored some 'sponsor' tickets so we need to coordinate with you).
I also have inside information that VARIETY is coming out with some new NEEDLE scoops soon!

Awl... are you not talking to me anymore??? :(
Mark Johnson
11-01-2006, 06:51 PM
Actually, we're broke as hell, Conrad. Seriously. However, I put Ted on as assistant for a forensic case in Chino to underwrite the trip. We'll go down there and do driver POV plates for a re-enactment of a collision and basically use the proceeds to fund Ted's trip. Most of my forensic cases actually require an assistant so it's a cool way to be able to travel using the client's dime.

11-01-2006, 06:53 PM
I know, The joke was that Lingo and I just got back from New York to see a dvx screening, that's all...It was stupid.
Mark Johnson
11-01-2006, 07:06 PM
Hey man, tell me about the screening. Seriously. Was this that selection of HorrorFest entries? Was yours included? Spill the deets Contrad!
conrad_johnson
11-01-2006, 07:13 PM
The screening was fantastic, All of the entries were slammin' good on the big screen. Dear Jane was one of the films screened as the screening was the top ten dvx films, and we were 7th. Mark Harris put it on, and did an outstanding job, that dude is full of charisma. He was also kind enough to let us crash at his place a couple of nights and show us around a little. all in all, it was a great success. I also got to meet a bunch of dvxusers in the flesh, very cool. No Ted Arabian though, quite a dissapointment.
Mark Johnson
11-01-2006, 07:27 PM
Man, that rocks. Congrats to you, dude. It's pretty amazing to just have the experience of seeing YOUR work on a big screen in the apple. Whoa!
That's so friggin' cool.
Ted is everything you'd expect him to be. Enthusiastic, articulate and funny. Oh, and one of the endearing things is the way he stays in touch with his wife, Diane. They have such a great relationship and he speaks so highly of her. ( I sure know a lot of guys who either trash their significant others or simply act as though they don't exist).

Hi guys...I'm writing this on my Treo'. Ted and I are at a pretty incredibly cool event that we won't divulge other than to say it is related to the Needle story. We're going to shoot some B-roll tomorrow and look forward to B-man arriving in the morning. We'll post more tonight when we get to our hotel.

OMG! I LOVE SoCal!!!
Mark and I have had a fantastic bout of auditions in Upland and are now in Thermal for another day of shooting.
Upon our arrival, we were greeted by a pair of golf carts that drove us to a celebration party! We were fed incredible food, entertained by live music and offered free beer and wine!!!
(Wow! Do ALL film-makers get this treatment???)
Tomorrow, we shoot again but this time we are joined by Brandon Rice!!!
Woo-Hoo!!!
We're living the dream!!!
Ted
PS - I know that this may not be appropriate.... but I have the BEST audition story to share. (I am sure that MANY of you will enjoy this!) It is going to take me a little time to prepare this but it is worth the wait!!! :)

Okay, okay... this is great. I wish that I had this "audition bit" ready for you all but It is too late and is requiring 3 programs to pull this all together.
But I am telling you it is funny.
Let's just say, I am calling it, "The 'F' Bomb!"
(some of you may remember a little film I did before I changed my name and came to California that featured the classic "f bomb..." well, here is another!
But you are going to have to wait until I get back to the hotel tomorrow.
Sorry! :(
Ted
Good night to my wife... 3000 miles away but closer than ever! :love4:

Thanks Kevin,
We've got pics and a number of technical questions that we'll get to you tonight. By the time we got back to the hotel last night I wasn't able to keep my eyes open (though Ted seems to have a prodigous ability to keep rolling even though he's the one on East Coast time). So, whenever we're back here tonight I'll shoot you some stuff via e-mail.
We're gonna find out what kind of freebie breakfast one can get at the luxurious Holiday Inn Express.
If you're reading the thread, Diane, .... HI! Your husband is behaving himself and working hard. Thanks for lending him to the project!

Congratuations, Ted. Looks like we were even able to provide you with an earthquake or two while you were out here.
EDIT: It was tiny, though...3.5 at Mt. Baldy. If you look north from Cable Airport, you'll basically be looking at Mt. Baldy. It's pretty close.

Wait... no... I've never gotten that kind of treatment. I usually wind up at Jack in the Box thumbing through 1 dollar bills to see if I have enough to upgrade my combo to curly fries...
Seriously though, sounds like you guys are having a great time!!
And Ted, you really should move here... now just to convince your wife that it's the right thing to do!

Tom,
Glad you asked. Those shirts and other fine garments will be for sale at the Threading The Needle store, which will be opening soon in Beverly Hills, Palos Verdes, and Barstow.
Blaine,
Brandon said that he wasn't ready to take that step just yet. :) Not really. We had the HVX on a tripod and Brandon shot statics and some good shoulder-mount tests using his DVX, which he brought with him today.
