Can I edit XH A1 PAL HDV 1080 25f material on Avid Xpress?
Which project settings would I use (50i or 25p)?

Can I edit interlaced 1080 HDV PAL material on Avid Xpress?

I don't have the answer. I sort of have the same question. Which NLEs can handle 25F and with what project settings should it be handled?

I didn't see any specific support of 25F on their website. You can always edit 25F in a 1080 50i timeline, but what you want is progressive handling of the footage when anything has to be rendered.

FCP, Vegas and Premiere Pro support 25F.

So it's just like editing 25P then?

With the footage, yes, but when you perform any kind of render that involves movement across the frame (motion graphics, filters etc.) it will show interlace artifacts, unless the timeline can be set to progressive rendering.

When I worked with 25P footage from the DVX100 I always set the field options in the project settings to No Fields (progressive) and that seemed to work just fine. I hope it's no more difficult to handle 25F. It doesn't seem to be any trouble at all capturing these F-modes with Vegas however. I believe Shannon tested this and wrote about it over at xlcinema.
