How do you use the Reels Function in a FireStore?

I just dont quite get it so hope someone has some experience with using 'Reels' that they can pass onto me.

I like to think that they are there to help organise and manage clips in a logical manner during the shoot.

You sort of have it correct. I use the FS-100 all the time, and just haven't found a real need for the reels fuction. It is only an organization function. If I were shooting maybe three different TV commercials in one day, I may organize the clips into reels, just for playback purposes. But, who does that? My advice, ignore it...

I had some advice on the Creative Cow Firestore forum that told me how to work the reels function. Basically it is in the Organise command and accessed by Function Keys.

I probably will use it on occassion. Primarily I would use it to pre organise material for my edit process where I like to stay totally organised. Previously I had the benefit of scene detect. Now I figure I can use shot marks and reels to help manage clips before I take them into the NLE in defined bins.

I often shoot more that one TVC a day but I also figure I would use a function like reels for things such as off speed clips, format changes, break the reels up as Dialogue, packshots,..etc

You still have the DV Start/Stop function with DVCPRO-HD clips.

You can use the function as you outline, that would be helpful.

But I do all that in the P2 Import window, where I can assign clip name, take, notes, etc. I just find it easier. The beauty of having more than on way of doing things, is that it makes it more useful to more people, as we all work differently.

And once you've gone through the FS-100's menu system a couple of times, you find it really easy. I pretty much don't look at it, I can count how many button presses I do to get to a menu or sub-menu, at this point.

Post back and let us know how the reels function in the FS is working out for you in the field. I'd be very interested to hear if it works as you expect it to. Seeing as how it's something I almost never look at.
