Hi all. I really want to start burning Dual Layer DVD for some of my productions. I have 3 cam shoots that routinely run in excess of 2 hours (one filming of Cats we did was almost three hours long, and we had breaks just for tap swapping). It killed me to have that (along with tons of extras, behind the scenes, slide shows and everything else cool) crammed into a single layer disc. And it showed. That's why I am looking to start buying Dual layer, I dont ever want to lose quality of work because of space constraint.

Problem is, I have heard there can be some truly nasty compatibility issues with the media itself (Manufacturer), the burner, and the even the software.

I noticed the Sci-Fi Fest DVD's were dual layer and ran perfectly on my players. Does anyone know what brand those were, for instance.

Anyone had sucess with say, Verbatim dual layer, a Lite On Burner, and Nero 6?

Any help on what works for you would be appreciated. I've never done them, and was not sure about compatability.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I'll be interested in responses to this as well. Fu_Pow is currently finishing up a 2+ hour live show shoot that we did and we've been talking about whether to put in on dual layer, double sided or just two separate DVDs. My concern is that home burned DVDs in general are a a somewhat iffy proposition in terms of compatability. Seems like dual layer just presents twice the opportunity for something to go wrong.

I use a liteon burner and JVC discs. Havent had more than the odd issue. The mac has pioneer? Cent remember, but using same discs same results basically.

I just covered an event for a friend. Burned a 1:45min project in Encore using a few HP discs from Walmart. No problems in 3 different players. I'm using a Pioneer drive.

sorry to bring this back up....but were you guys using DVD+R DL media or DVD-R DL media?

I've got a wedding that is 1:45 that I want to burn on a DL disc. Thanks!

vcdhelp.com can tell you all about different kinds of burners and media. Just make sure you know the media code of what you are buying.

Also Tayio Yudens are almost always the best you can buy.

(almost always.)

I exclusively buy Taiyo Yuden DVD's for everything, but they do not make one for dual layer, or at least I cannot find any. Seems like the Ritek DVD-R DL's got bad reviews on newegg. DVD+R DL seem much easier to find for sale also, but I'm not sure how compatible they are.

Correct, unfortunately Taiyo Yuden does not make any DL media. For my non-DL projects, I use white inkjet-printable TY exclusively.

For DL disks, the highest-quality media is Memorex DVD+DL:

If your DVD burner has book type/bitsetting support, use DVD+R or DVD+DL media and let the drive flag the disk as a DVD-ROM, this will give you the best compatibility with standalone DVD players.

You meant Verbatim, right? At least that's what you linked to.

I would tend to agree.

Cool, thanks guys! I'm pretty sure my drive has the ability to change the book type and do bitsetting. Right now I'm burning direct from Encore, because if I make an ISO and try to open it in Nero, I get a weird error saying something is not set correctly.

I plan to get a new mac pro soon and switch all my efforts to Final Cut Studio, so hopefully, I can produce some good DL discs with that also!
