Can't seem to find the answer, apologies if it's a no brainer....

Will the G1 & A1 be able to shoot & record in standard definition as well as HD?
I'm really thinking about buying an A1, but still have a lot of existing clients with SD projects.

Thanks,
Scott

Yes, 16x9 and 4x3 SD DV too.

That said, you can get a much better SD image by acquiring in HDV and downconverting an HDV project/timeline to SD when needed.

Sweet! Making my next decision all the more easier....

Now another quick question (hopefully): Assuming I don't want to put stress on the heads of the A1, will I need a new HD camcorder to batch capture? In other words, right now I'm using a PV-GS150 with my DVX. But I couldn't use that camera to ingest HD footage into FCP, right?

You are right. You cannot ingest HDV on a DV camera. You would need an HDV camera to ingest footage shot in 60i mode on the canon. If you shoot in 24f or 30f then you will need a Canon HV10 camera to play it back. Other than that you will have to use the H1 to capture. Not a lot of options. However for us H1 users there were no options up until about a month ago.....so the HV10 is at least a step in the right direction.

Peace!

You couldn't ingest HDV footage with it. The new $1299 HV10 from Canon will work as an ingest deck, and makes a pretty good B-camera in 1080i.

There's also the Firestore C option, which should allow you to merely drag and drop recorded files off the hard drive. You can put the tapes on the shelf. :)

Does anyone know if I need the HV10 to play back 25F?

Yes, if you're looking for a playback deck other than your camera.

I think the HV10 is the more practical solution, unless you really really need a hard disk recorder. Personally, I'd rather own an extra camera.

Ah yes, I think I understand why now. I could play back 25p shot on my DVX in any other miniDV camera because it was embedded in a 50i stream. I think Canon does this the other way around so 50i would be embedded in a 25p stream?
The Canon HV10 is more expensive than a Citidisk though so I might consider a hard disk recorder.
