I am just helping as a tecnichal assistant for a documentary and also orgnaizing a little with the post hpuse, as i had some HVX shots already.

The problem is that the posthouse told us that the Avid adrenalin cant handle any spanned clips...!!
Its impossible for us to do it with another posthouse as we ot some contract, and they wount change their editing program.

My question is for hose who work with avid express on their machines or those wo know avid better: how is the workflow with the spanned clips in avid and is there a way to get around this?

I thought about opening it in edius broadcast and connect the spanned clips to make a new one, but this doesnt work anymore when you got cips bigger then 4gb tha are splittet because of the fat32 by the hvx.
Thats just to much work, as we are shooting 5 hours interviews day by day and its not possible to take care of the clips...!

Any hlp or suggestion?
Thanks very much...!

Avid does handle spanned clips. Throw all mxf-files from the first card into the ../MXF/1/-folder. When you scrub in the clip into the second part, Avid should display 'Media Offline', because the second part isn't there yet. When you copy the files from the second clip into the ../MXF/1/-folder, it should all work. Note that Avid shows you only one long master clip( which is the way it should be). So, only one of the two filenames show up in your bin as a master clip, but it contains both files.

If it doesn't work for them, they're either handling it wrong, or they're running outdated versions. Spanned clips are supported from before version 5.2 for XpressProHD, or 2.2 for MCA. Tell them to update their old software, or to get their act together and keep up with evolution.

Hi eLeventy,

thanks for your quick response, the message from the postfactory did sound spooky indeed....and i as able to reach someone from avid this morning too, they said that the avid adrenaline can handle it if both clips are present and you are using adrenaline 2.5 or higher..!(said that even 2.2 could work, but that was not bullet proof)

So they will have to update..thanks!

Spoke to the posthouse, and like always its more complicated like it should be: avid says it works from adrenaline 2.5, they say they got 2.6, the latest one, but had the experience that there seem to be 2 different productions of the hvx (thats what the guy from the poshouse said), and one would name the spanned clips both the same nam, and the latest one would call them different..never heard this before, but of course my clips have the same name....good luck..i will see the posthouse today and test some spanned footage, lets see what happens, but this would be really depressing if the billion dollar adrenaline couldnt handle it, and my small lovely 1000 euro software edius broadcast doe all the p2 stuff lovely...other experiences welcome!!

HEEELP!!

damn, being in pal-land is not easy...so even the latest adrenaline version has no 720 pal support, we shot 720pn, which makes i probably even worse as we cant even open it in a 1080project...i love avid..any suggestions?

-For the 720, I think your out of luck for the moment. 720P25 is scheduled for Q4 '06 or Q1 '07.

-Not sure about the identical names, but I think there is a confusion between the actual file-name, and the filename which is contained in the metadata inside the file. If you do have identical filenames, try throwing the first file in ../MXF/1/ and the second one in ../MXF/2/

Ok, thanks for this eLeventy,
the post house suggests weird ways of converting the whole material (will be about 50 gig) as they just can handle 1080i with the avid right now....the editing wount happen before january, but im not sure if one can count on avid...where did you hear about the 720p-upgrade rumour for the avid?
Actually we would need the 720pn, as we recorded native to handle all the interviews...thanks for your help.
(and we are in pal land of course...so lets hope that they will implement pal 720 pn as well...got a bad feeling..)
