Hi gang,
I read that the A1 doesn't have SDI out, but does it have HDMI out (aka the poor man's sdi)?

Never mind. I just found out there's no hdmi :-( It looks like it's good old mindv tape for me.

I believe you still have the component out on the A1 which you can use if you have the right A/D and capture equipment.
Too bad there is no portable solution. I will have to stick with tape as well. /=

Yes, the A1 does have component out...but you can't capture uncompressed HD via component, can you?

sure you can, if you have a component capture card (aja or blackmagic)...
oh, and a friggin fast computer with fast raid setup to capture the uncompressed signal.
(I personally don't think that capturing uncompressed is rational unless you're a tv station or someone with boucoup bucks)
I would look into cineform's injest software and one of the cards above, it'll capture live uncompressed and compress it realtime into cineform's 'visually lossless' codec taking up way less space and thus requiring less of a computer to do so.

The card+cineform sounds like a good option.

Done this a number of times with the XL-H1, the only problem is analog cable runs tend to be short. SDI can go into hundreds of meters without a repeater so until there's a Firestore-like device mounted to the camera that can do the A/D conversion to a "more robust" codec entirely on-board, it would make sense to get one of those little AJA HD analog to SDI converter boxes and capture via SDI anyway.
I think most of you will find that Canon HDV will more than suffice.

Canon HDV is a beautiful thing but it would be disappointing to be stuck with it one day when HDV has vanished from the face of the earth. I could probably get a new camera by then but it would feel better to know that I could still use the Canon by hooking up some sort of portable storage device to it that could convert the component signal to something a little bit better than HDV, say DVCPro HD or CineForm something. Variable codecs would be nice. :)

I know what you mean, Norbert. SDI was one of the selling points of the XL-H1 for me. However currently inconvenient, it's nice to know that you can get a technically better image acquisition when it's really needed.

I agree with Norbert. Aside the timecode stuff for external audio syncro and considering there is an AJA analog -> HD-SDI converter with audio embedded (isn't it?), will there be any substantial difference* comparing both solutions? Especially in terms of the video signal quality? (A1 analog vs. G1 HD-SDI ports)
* If for a short distance like 1/2 meters away from the camera? (I'm sorry american boys for our metric system standard :))

Hi gang,
I read that the A1 doesn't have SDI out, but does it have HDMI out (aka the poor man's sdi)?Without HDMI out @Canon, there is the new Sony's V1 via, still after the last news if confirmed. Maybe there isn't drop resolution @progressive_mode according the pre-production unit tested theory.
Sony's V1 HDMI portable solution:

This last link can be used with the A1 analog and G1 HD-SDI ports, as well. Anyway, @Cineform or DV 100 or JPEG (available from the Blackmagic offer) route, of course.
