A situation:

My partner is using an older version of FCP, I believe it's 3 or 4. I know that this version can't open and convert the MXF files, but could his older version of FCP work if I converted the files to QT files in 5.1 and gave him the files on a hard drive to import to his system ?

Or... does he need to upgrade to the newest version of FCP to work with HVX files ?

Second question: I've got FCP studio on my desktop and would like ot use it on my powerbook for ingesting cards. On how many machines does Apple let one install FCP ?

Once the files are quicktime, they can be used on any version of FCP as long as he has the DVCpro codecs installed. They should be there if FCP was installed anyway. Also there is really no way of Apple knowing if you installed your own copy of FCP on several machines.

Thanks bgundu. My business partner will have to be dragged kicking and screaming into the P2/ non tape world. Maybe he's just irked that he won't be able to charge for digitizing tape... ;-). I'm trying to eliminate any snafus in our workflow before I start handing him drives with HVX files on them.

On a side note, I'm surprised at how much resistance/ fear there is to tape-free aquisition in the video world. CF cards have long proven their validity, and yet you'd never know it when talking to many video folks.
Rant over .
