I have an A1 on the way and i understand I can get 1440x1080 video out of it.
When testing with Adobe Encore and some other apps i noticed that i could only put on videos which were 720x480 which is standard definition.
I understand that they are coming out with blu-ray... etc..
I was just wondering if there were any programs that are capable of creating a high definition DVD. Do all DVD players only play at that resolution? Cuz ive heard somewhere that there is a way of getting past this.

You heard correctly.
JVC partnered with I/O Data and created the ProHD DVD player that can play WM9HD, H264, and m2t files at any resolution up to 1920x1080.
Depending on the application this works very well. I have produces several 20 minute programs for fine art galleries that are displayed on 42" plasma displays. The JVC [JD100U I think] or the AVeLink player from I/O Data plays 1920x1080 m2t files that look incredible. The only downside is that you can only hold about 21 minutes of HD on a single layer DVD.
Anyway check it out for yourself -- http://pro.jvc.com/prof/attributes/features.jsp?model_id=MDL101546

DVD SP4 can create actual HD DVD's that will playback in the new Toshiba players (and soon, the XBOX 360 too)
I've created a few with simple DVD-R's and HDV material.

Again, for the right application this DVD player is amazing. It can also be networked and you can attach an external hard drive.
The fact that a standard DVD only holds 20 minutes of HD works out great for me. :) If it could hold more I'm sure my customers would expect more, so I haven't actually tried the external drive, if I "knew" it worked for sure I would be compelled to use it.

I'm confused: does this play HD-DVD and WMV9/HD, H.264 files from a standard DVD or is it just the latter, playing back files from the DVD or 2.0 Usb port?

I have a Buffalo Link Theater that is based off the same chipset as the Avel and JVC units. It plays HD windows media files, HD mpg files as well as divx and xvid.
You can play them from a DVD in the player, from a USB device hooked up to the USB port or even across a home network/wired or wireless. In addition it upscales SD DVDs to near HD quality. It really is quite the device.....and a great intermediate solution to watch your HD content with until Blue-ray and HD-DVD slug it out to a winner. Oh...amd when I said mpgs I meant all mpgs based clips....M2v .M2t .mpg .vob. This is a real jack of all trades. The only thing it doesn't do is Quicktime.
Check out the Market Place at DVinfo or DVXuser as I am selling one of these for $150. It is a great device. I am only selling it as I have an Xbox360 and a Media Center PC and can Stream my HD to that instead. So the Link Theater is unneccesary now.
Peace!
