I posted this in Cafe Ala DVX, but thought that it should go here too.

Hey people,

I'm pretty new to the forum, and am starting to get a feel for the major players here. But I haven't seen anyone from Virginia. Just curious if anyone is located in or around the Charlottesville, VA area. I'm looking for some possible collaborators.

Ben

What's up, Ben. I'm down in Va Beach. Good to see another user from VA. Everyone else near us seems to be from NC. Do you have an upcoming project?

in college in Richmond at the moment, but i am from up around DC. Just learned you people call it "Nova." No one up there calls it that...

Anyway, if anyone is doing any projects around the city, hit me up.

I do. In fact, most Richmond-ers call it "occupied" NoVa! :)

Alexandria here.....not close to C-ville, but still Virginia!

Yes. Most immediately I am participating in the Virginia Film Festival's Adrenaline Film Project. I did it last year, and it's a lot of fun, real intense though. I think 11 three person teams got accepted this year. We all have 72 hours (the course of the festival) to write, shoot, and edit a 3-5 minute short film. Each team is assigned a specific genre, and we all have to incorporate the same line of dialogue and prop in our short somehow. We don't get any of that info until the Festival begins, so there is literally no preplanning. The script has to get approved before we can move on to shoot, and so forth. I slept maybe 2 hours last year. Keep an out for me on the boards with questions the 26th-28th.

After that I have a couple of shorts in line, just still dealing with the pre-production logistical/financial concerns. But I'm up for whatever people, just working on my portfolio and saving up some cash before I make a move (I'm a recent grad). What about you guys?

I am in Richmond VA, and go to NOVA, and Virginia beach every week.
Family lives near Charlottesville, so I go there from time to time.

In Richmond we have a film festival once a month called Project resolution.
There are usually a crowd of 100 or so people. It is held at the Fire House theater, across from Virginia Commonwealth University. VCU also has a photography and film degree program so there is often many college kids there looking to network.

Ahoy!

I'm currently residing in Blacksburg, VA. Admittedly, there's not much of a local film scene here. There's some activity due to the University but not much other than that. Pretty small town. Always interested in collaborating with people though.

I'm in Richmond 'doin my thing.

Anyone going to the actors showcase tomorrow?

"There will be an Audition Showcase for independent film actors and directors at VCU's Shafer Street Playhouse (221 N. Shafer Street, 2nd Floor Rooms 201 & 204) on 10/19, 4 - 8 pm. Directors: reserve a spot in advance by emailing here. Actors: have a 1-minute monologue and email photo, resume and phone number to Anne Chapman to reserve a time. Note: one of those studios may be named by someone familiar to all readers of "Tales." Look for it!"

This was taken from tvjerry.com.

Yeah, I've heard about project resolution. Some friends of mine from school have screened stuff there. Sounds really cool. It's pretty much open to anyone, right?

Also curious, but what do you all do? Writers, directors, sound people, visual effects, etc. Hobbyists, professionals, or aspiring pro's? And if so, what kind of kits, equipment do you have?

Hey there,

I'm living in Toronto, Canada right now and my wife and I are considering Charlottesville as a place to move.

Just wondering what the production scene is like there. I know I'm a little spoiled as an indie film and tv guy in Toronto with the abundance of production and available personal, etc... but I also like the idea of a smaller indie scene that supports local talent.

Anyone have any thoughts on casting, equipment rental houses, or just general impressions of the the area? Will I mostly be driving to Richmond to gear up for shoots?

Thanks!

Hey Yogurt,

I'm not sure of the indie film scene in C'ville but moving from the Shenandoah Valley years ago before attending VCU, I highly doubt there are any rental houses in the greater C'ville area. With that being said, Richmond does have several rental houses for most of your equipment needs from 35 to Cinealta, techno cranes, lighting, grip, the works. It is about an hour east of C'ville along the very rural I-64 corridor, but C'ville certainly is a beautiful place and many celebrities have made it their homes, but I don't think anything will compare to what you have available in Toronto.

Ben - I too am a local DP with my own kit and have access to several cameras. My kit also contains several mics, shotgun, wireless, etc. I also have some 1Ks, Kino 4-bank, inkies, Chimers, C-stands, assorted grip gear and I do my cutting on two Apple systems. One uncompressed HD system and one system configured to do mainly SD.

I've worked on promos, music videos, and corporate work in the area.

Just a student (aspiring filmmaker) with a DVX package and a very small light kit (LTM pepper and a Lowel DP w/ a Chimera) Works well for what I do.

Although not doing any filming right now is killing me.

Hey Yogurt,

Glad to hear you're considering Charlottesville. I've lived here for most of my life and it really is a beautiful town with a lot going on in the arts. As far as the local filmmaking scene, there is a fair amount going on. There are more actors here than you'd think. Paladin Pictures and Cavalier Films are also based out of C'Ville, you might want to check out their websites. And there are a fair amount of amateur filmmakers like myself who help each other out. Right now I'm doing some special effects work and compositing for a guy who just shot a Zombie musical (no joke) with a large cast, all from C'ville. So, there are film/theater people here. And, as has been stated, Richmond is just an hour away and there is a lot going on there too. I just graduated, so I'm still getting a feel for who's who here, but there is a lot of creative energy, lots of artists who love to collaborate. I'm enjoying myself. If you have any other questions about the area, feel free to ask or send me an e-mail. I'd be happy to talk to you more about C'ville.

I was at a Raven's game a few years ago and was impressed with the creativity of the content and very curious as to who created those graphics. I'm sure that was a great gig and congrats on the success.

Where are you guys? I sent out e-mails for 6 months straight looking for folks to help on a project a few years back and got NO response in the greater Richmond area. I'm certainly willing and able to help out like-minded folks as time permits. If you've got something coming up, hit me up.

Maybe we should have a get together like the guys up in NYC.

Tim,

Great to hear from you. I'm loving the response to the thread. Bummer that you got no response a few years back. I'm just out of school (JMU with a major in Media Arts & Design Digital Video Producing and Directing, Minors in Film Studies and Creative Writing) so a few years back I was probably busy working on that. But now I'm back home in C'ville, saving up money, building up my 'kit', and doing stuff locally. I'll definately keep you in mind for some upcoming projects I'm planning on. Since I've been back I've DP'ed one feature length 'super indy' dv film, done audio sweetening on another 'super indy' film, Directed/Wrote/Produced/Edited another 17 minute short, and as you've seen done work on a Zombie Musical. So there are film people around. Stay in touch.

Ben

p.s. I'd be very interested in a meeting.

Hey man,

Good to hear from you. Congratulations on the Horrorfest entry. Just watched it. Good stuff. I joined the forum with 3 weeks to go until the deadline. Was going to try and pump something out, but stuff was just too crazy with work. I had an insane idea too (aren't they all?), still want to do it. Anyway, now you know about us.

All the Best,

Cool, Ben. I graduated JMU way back in '93. I then moved to Boulder, CO for about ten years and got a job in a record store and boarded. What a great way to put that degree to use.

I'm sure you had classes with John Woody. I heard he's still there.

I'm just finishing up a short I did this summer here in Tidewater. Ashley Sawyer, a recent JMU grad, helped me out. You might know her. I think she majored in Creative Writing and minored in film. My movie is about two blue collar dead body transport workers. It's in the hands of the Slamdance committee now. We'll see what happens.

I've got a DVX and lighting gear, jib, etc. We all should get a VA alliance for the next fest.

Later,

Steve

Thanks, but it totally doesn't compare with 'Bloody Mary'. Not even on the same scale. If you want to see what you can do with the DVX you should watch that or any of the other top films. I'm blown away and charged up to put something out that is a lot better than what I did with Mary Mercer.

Yeah, I saw them. They are really good. You get better each time out (most people do at least) so I'm sure whatever you do next will improve upon what you did before. Just keep shooting. Its hard work making a movie, even if its only 5 minutes long.

Thanks for the Charlottesville info. Man it would be nice to live that close to the Blue Ridge. I also wouldn't miss the 6 months of winter here in T.O.

Hope to work with some of you guys. Especially all you horror fans... I can't believe I missed the horror contest! I'll have to get the collection. Some of my ultra short DVX horror flicks are here: www.killercasts.com (http://www.killercasts.com)

Just got through the Virginia Film Festival. I competed in the Adrenaline Film Project, which is a 72 hour short filmmaking competition. We won the Audience Award for Best Film and the Jury Award for Best Film.

Yogurt, I know that you were asking what the local film community was like. Well, this years festival, which is held in C'ville, had Morgan Freeman, Robert Duvall, Liev Schreiber, Tom Shadyac, Brad Silberling, Jeff Wadlow, Beau Bauman, and many other industry professionals in attendance. Brad Silberling, the director of Lemony Snicket: A Series of Unfortunate Events, was in my basement critiquing and giving me advice while I edited my short for the film festival. Just an example of some of the oppurtunities you can find in Charlottesville with filmmaking. Thought you might find it interesting.

I'm from Richmond too. I went to JMU and yes, I had classes with John Woody. Sounds like we all have a lot in common.

I've got tons of broadcast experience, but I am rather new to indie film. If you guys are thinking about meeting, definitely count me in.
