Check out this movie I made with the xl2. It was filmed in 5 hours. There is much grain is some parts, probably due to the fact that I raised the gain up quite a bit.
Anyways...just check it out.

Good job, Steve - you've obviously put a lot of love into the production (agreed, the lighting must have been a challenge). Hope you enjoyed it. and thanks for sharing. Regards, Michael

Hey thanks for the replys! I will actually be changing the ending scene, some people told me that it was too quick and didn't really make scense. So 5 minutes extra will be added on to the ending which will also involve an Alien Queen! Check back in about a couple weeks (hopefully it will be done by then) for the updated version! Thanks!!

I watched it.
Well, it was just for fun I guess?
The CGI was good, as far as I´m concerned - I only missed the slime dripping from the aliens mouth and maybe some steam from his nostrils, but I guess that would be really hard to animate...
For the XL2 stuff: no offence, but next time get a DP, you still could shoot this in 5 hours, but it would turn out so much better...
Since I know how time consuming and difficult animation is, I think its better to fully concentrate on it.
You could have shot this with a one chip handycam - it would´t look much different.
Having a XL2DVXHVXwhatever won´t magically produce "cinelike" images.
Further your knowledge in compositing, CG lighting and colorcorrection - this will make your movies shine!

Spartacus, what do you mean DP? and would you suggest any books or internet sites to help further our knowledge in compositing, CGI lighting and colorcorrection. This movie was good, but minor details would've made a big difference.

DP, director of photography
or at least get someone experienced with shooting stuff...
for the filming: stick around here and read a lot, watch A LOT of movies and write down what you liked about their cinematography, as a primer on shooting read "the 5 Cs of cinematography"
for postwork: check creativecow.net
good luck!

can you tell us more about how you did the alien in post.

The alien was done in 3ds max which involved a process of converting a blender file to a max file, (the alien model was originally blender). Once I figured that out, I had to create an entire bone system for it. For the animation, I was able to use a preset motion capture file, but ended up having to animate some of the scenes by hand. (which for me being a beginner, was very tedious). I wish I could of added slime dripping off the aliens mouth and body, but knew there was no way in the world I would be able to pull that off.

you can find the model at scifi3d.com under the aliens tab on the left. It is free. You may also be able to get in a 3ds format too. You can find hundreds of free high quality models from scifi3d.
