Iīm shooting a musicvideo with hvx next month. I havenīt used the camera before. I have three options:
1. to shoot with two 8gb p2 and tranfer the material to laptop pc after cards are full.

2. to shoot with two 8gb p2 and tranfer the material to external hdd after cards are full.

3. to shoot with some else system, that Iīm not familiar with...

Which option is the best?? Is it even possible to transfer the material directly from the camera to hdd via firewire in the location?? If it is, do I have to format it with mac, cause weīre going to edit with fcp. Can I transfer files from pc laptop to mac to edit with fcp??

Is it very slow to transfer material from cards to for example to hdd??

Sorry for so many(propably stupid) questions. But Iīm confused with this system...

You can transfer files via firewire to external hdd, but you are limited to the 60 cap.

You can also transfer to a usb on the go drive (is that what it's called)

You're camera will not supply power to either of these devices. They have to have their own camera source

If you have a 32 bit type II PCMCIA slot in a laptop, you can transfer to the laptop. You can transfer the footage from pc laptop to mac, people do it often. I don't know the exact workflow for that though.

That's the best I can tell you at the moment

Your best workflow would be to use two cards, and when one of them is full (don't wait for both to be full) pull out the full card and plug it into a PC laptop's PCMCIA slot, and copy the contents of the card onto an external FAT32 hard disk.

It should take somewhere around 6 to 7 minutes to copy a card onto an external hard disk.

You can then take that FAT32 hard disk and plug it right into a Mac, and FCP can import the data right off the drive, no problem.

Thanks for anwers guys!!

I tried the solution to use laptops PCMCIA slot, but it doesnīt recognize the p2. What is the problem?? Do I need some special program to get my pc laptop to recognize p2?? I installed p2 drivers and viewer but it was no help... Does anyone know a solution??

You need to install a driver for the P2 card.
Get it here: http://p2.andersholck.com

Click download in the upper left. Then It's "Go" button number 4.

Did you have a P2 card in the slot while installing the driver?

No. Is it supposed to be inside while installing??

Yes. It is. You should have a p2 card in all slots you have available (if you have more than one) when installing the p2 driver

No. Is it supposed to be inside while installing??Absolutely, the installer tells you to put cards in all of the slots that you wish to install drivers for. If you are installing the USB drivers needed to access the HVX, it will need to be connected during the installation as well.

when I installed drivers it only asked about usb drivers and nothing about PCMCIA. I tried to install drivers again with p2 in the slot, but that didnīt help either!!! What is the problem??

I have another question referring to this project.... If we have one MAC laptop where we can download the P2 files without FCP and then an iMac (powerpc 2,1ghz, 1.5gb ram 800gb hard drive) with FCP 5.04 is it possible to transfer the files to the iMac from the laptop (without any problems)?

What do you think about the techical side of the iMac? Is it fast enough for editing DVCPROHD?

The Mac setup on our two-day shoot:

We had a 4GB and an 8GB P2 card. Mac Powerbook 1.67ghz with all P2 drivers and FCP 5.1.1 installed and a FW400 external drive. When one card got full we would pull it and immediately transfer the CONTENTS and LASTCLIP.TXT files to the external drive; I made a folder for each card and kept them organized like reels. The 8GB took about 18-20 minutes to copy, the 4GB only half that. Probably would have been faster with a FW800 external drive, but it didn't really affect us. There were enough pauses and breaks in between shots that we never found ourselves waiting on a card to finish in order to keep shooting.

After transferring the raw P2 files I would go back and import them into FCP, saving the resulting Quicktimes to a different folder on the drive -- but mirroring my reel structure in the FCP bins (all separated by card number). Once I was assured that all the clips had come across, I gave my cameraman the go ahead to erase the card and keep going. Sometimes I skipped this step if things got busy, but I made sure I always had the original P2 media. Note that it was just the two of us, and although we were moving very fast the workflow held up very well and we had few delays due to file transfer; the one time we had both cards full we just broke for lunch while they transferred.

I'm going to archive all the original P2 files on an external drive and just transfer the Quicktimes to my tower to edit. Has anybody come up with a better system for archiving the source material?

Okay,

We are shooting with hvx and transform material to pc laptop and external hard drive with PCMCIA. Then we are going to edit with fcp 5.1.2

What do I need to know?? Is there something special I need to do, or will this system work with out problems??

Just make sure the external hard drive is formatted FAT32. And if Windows won't let you format larger than 32GB, don't sweat it -- get Partition Magic or Swiss Knife; those utilities will let you format a drive as FAT32 at up to 4 terabytes. And you'll want the drive to be Firewire (or both Firewire and USB); Macs don't really work all that well with USB, they work much better with firewire, so make sure the drive you use can be connected via firewire.
