While not my first time creating an image in Photoshop, this is the first time I've created a true visual effects composite, by painting elements onto an existing picture.

Everything in the pic is from a picture (no 3D). I took the background plate pic and the fire and smoke elements were taken from existing photos and then just using the clone tool I "painted" my own fire and smoke around an asteroid (from a NASA photo). To me it just doesn't feel quite real, but I'm not sure what it is exactly. The smoke maybe? The fire? I would love some feedback.

Thanks for looking.

Hey,

Looks good...the only thing that I can see that might need a little work would be the smoke, it is just to clean on the edges, try adding some trail particals off the sides of the edges...Maybe try to emulate some fumes off the top...and just a little little little LITTLE motion blur! Then that astroid will kick a$$!
