Hey all,

I am going to be screening the top 10 horror fest films at an indie movie theater in NYC at the end of Oct.

Watch a trailer: HERE (http://www.desperatecomfort.com/working/horrorfest_trailer.mov)

http://www.dvxuser6.com/uploaded/2939/1161006535.jpg

I chose a bunch of our money-shots for the poster, in the hopes of really grabbing people. This poster will go up at the theater and around the E. Village, so we want it to shout out and really nail people.

Thanks to Jack for kicking out a really bad-assed poster design.

OCT 29TH 9PM
TWO BOOTS PIONEER THEATER
Ave A and E 3rd St.
Details: http://www.twoboots.com/pioneer/

The program is called:

DON'T GO BACK IN THE HOUSE, BITCH!- A collection of 6 minute horror shorts from the DVXUSER.com horror fest 2006.

I am taking the top ten because I only have about enough time for ten. I was originally going to choose shorts I liked, but it didn't really seem fair. So I went with this.

I know most of you are not in NYC and would not be here for it, but even still I thought it would be a nice little treat. I will be promoting it in NYC and trying to get people in to see your work. If you know people in NYC, please send them to the link above for details on the screening.

So the program will contain:

Rekindled
Bloody Mary
Halfway
Meat
The Seeing
Stricken
Dear Jane
Lakeside
Reunion
Welcome

WHAT I NEED FROM YOU

I have contacted some of you through PM, but here are the details for all:

Please send me a MiniDV runoff of your film ASAP. I talked to Edgen about an MPG and he put one up for me, but the rest, please send in MiniDV tapes with the highest quality runoff.

I will PM you all the address to mail to.

Please PM me your real name so that I can send it to the theater to update their website with film and filmmaker names.

Please let me know if you do NOT want to be shown.

This looks like a lot of fun.

Joe and I are toying with the idea of coming to the screening...

Plane tickets are cheap, but does anyone know of a cheap hotel or hostel nearby? Or want to put us up in exchange for liquor?

Rats! Missed it by a couple of notches.

Although, you really should take "REM", because technically, "Stricken" was a non-comp film. That would make "REM" #10.

(And mine, #11. That even makes me feel worse.) :undecided

LMFAO MARK!!!

I was saying that SAME thing last night watching WOLF CREEK.

"Don't go back in there, bitch! SHOOT HIM!"

Let me give this a little thought. We usually start promoting these things WAY before now, but not knowing what the program would be...So I hope we can get a crowd big enough to make it worth your while.

However, the after-party should be very very good times.

I've got a few friends in NYC that are going to make it out. Plus, our producer of Lakeside has a group of friends that will most likely make it out as well. So.. maybe 5-6 on my end?

good luck!

Sweet. I am working a connection I have to a studio here, hoping to get at least a couple of low level execs to come. No promises with those people, but I'll be working it.

Plane tickets are cheap, but does anyone know of a cheap hotel or hostel nearby? Or want to put us up in exchange for liquor? You are welcom to our futon ... if you are Ok with a beagle, a fat mean cat and / or a skinny mean cat as potential snuggle buddies. They usually all sleep with us, but you never know. Futon is available to whomever calls dibs first.

Great idea Mark, thanks for putting it together:beer:

Mark Harris

Yeah, and one or both of you could certainly crash at my place. It's big, but there is the same situation with dog+cat=INSANITY!!!! But you could crash out here as well. It's a big place with a futon all your own.

Jack, Mark, Alex - We may just take you up on the offer of a place to crash. We're thinking of coming in on either Saturday or early Sunday, and staying for a couple few nights. Joe's never been, so it would be fun to do some sightseeing. You know, waving to Al Roker outside the Today Show. Or not...

So who wants us the most? And what kind of liquor do you like?

Animals or no animals, we're happy either way.

For anyone who was thinking of traveling to NYC for the screening, there are two inexpensive hostels on the upper Upper West Side, near Columbia University. They are Euro-style, offering a few rooms with private baths but most with a shared bath, and are not bad overall, especially for the price (usually under $100/night with a shared bath). I've had friends stay in them, and no complaints, and they seem to draw a lot of hip young European travelers who hang out on the stoop in the evenings (a great NYC tradition).

Side Note: Anyone who's thinking of traveling to NYC should try to stay thru Tuesday. There's a parade in the village that's quite an experience. Not sure if it's on the weekend or the day of Halloween, but it'd be worth seeing.

How are you doing this? Technically, I mean. What are the requirements for the theater? The reason I ask is, there are a couple of bars here in DC and Baltimore that show films that may be up for showing this. I have contacts through my punk band. Let me know.

Jack Daniel Stanley
10-16-2006, 07:47 PM
Mark knows more but this is actually at movie theatre.
If the Angelica is the hallmark independent movie theatre in Manhattan
THen the Pioneer Theatre is the hallmark underground movie theatre in Manhattan.
http://www.twoboots.com/pioneer
Shows lots of indie stuff and stuff without distrobution.
But long story short - screen, projector, sound systm, etc. all in place.
What you would need is Jarred's permission and then all the physical requirments would be up to you.

Mark Harris
10-16-2006, 07:58 PM
Basically they asked me to screen my comedy series there in August. And I had screened shorts there in the past. So I've been developing a relationship with them, and when the HorrorFest came up, they had a spot for about 10 of them and were happy to give me that spot to program. That's about it.

With the ongoing corporatization of every square inch of NYC, in a time when CB's is moving to Vegas, and Coney Island is about to be paved over for a cineplex and a Gap, The Pioneer truely is a great venue, as they do show stuff you will never see anywhere else, not even in NYC.

Anthology Film Archives is another. They are actually owned by Angelika, and I've screened there before too. But they also screen stuff you won't find anywhere else.

Rock Punk!
10-16-2006, 08:53 PM
JDS Thanks for the link. I guess I can find out how these bars are showing the films. Probably likely they are just running them from DVD not like the Pioneer.

... when CB's is moving to Vegas ...

I know sad, I played there three times - people viewed that place as a hole but it was a dream come true for me.

Mark Harris
10-16-2006, 08:56 PM
I even have a joke about "the throne" in one of my comedy shorts.

It's not even so much depressing as just the most bizarre thing I've ever heard. I mean, WTF???

Oh well. And yeah, I ran it by Jarred and he thought it was a fun idea for the filmmakers to get some screentime. So I proceeded to brand it as a DVXUser event pretty much.

Updated the first post with a trailer I want to send out tomorrow in sort of an e-press release. I want to hit my large mail list, of course, but also some industry to come see everyone's work. Please check out the trailer and make suggestions. I don't know much about making trailers, and mainly copied this from another horror trailer I saw.

My hope is that those who might be on the fence from the poster, would see the trailer and say: "oh yeah, I'll check this out!"

Mark Harris
10-26-2006, 08:43 AM
Should we do any sort of announcements between movies, or just roll them?

Jack Daniel Stanley
10-26-2006, 08:51 AM
I'd ask the projector guy how long it'll take him between each film.

If it's 30 seconds or more then I'd say do a shout out for the filmmakers in attendence or whatever announcement you have.

If it's less than that then just roll em.

But I would try not to take up more time than he needs unless you wanna do one big announcement in the middle or something.

Are you doing prizes or something or just thinking shoutouts for the filmmakers?

Mark Harris
10-26-2006, 08:54 AM
it will take him much less than 30 seconds to change films. I dunno. I agree, I think in this case I would rather let them just roll. Just wondering what people think...

Brandon Rice
10-26-2006, 10:10 AM
Should we do any sort of announcements between movies, or just roll them?

Here's what I'd do. If the filmmaker is in attendance, allow them to do a quick Q&A after the film (like they do in many film festivals) I'd enjoy that a lot myself (if I were there) Just a thought.

Mark Harris
10-26-2006, 10:11 AM
Yeah, that's cool. We may get kicked out of the theater though. But I plan on having a camera, so maybe a Q&A at the bar after?

Brandon Rice
10-26-2006, 10:16 AM
there ya go. that'd work too. You only have the theatre for a brief time?

Mark Harris
10-26-2006, 10:22 AM
Well there are usually other programs playing all around the ones I do. So there might be something scheduled to show next.

Brandon Rice
10-26-2006, 10:26 AM
ah ok, gotcha. Maybe call and see if there are other things scheduled... if not, do the Q&A there :)

Jack Daniel Stanley
10-26-2006, 10:52 AM

You wanna warm that thing up and put some miles on it? Jarred loved the idea when I told him I wanted to get a camera there to film people chatting, Q&A, whatever. I just want some stuff to show it as a rockin' event, as promo material. But it would be cool stuff to put on the site too.

but you want to bring that bad-boy out for that?

Jack Daniel Stanley
10-26-2006, 11:09 AM
Well it would be kind of silly to put hours on that vs. a DVX.
Lemme see if I can get this ipod thing working.

Mostly I would rather enjoy myself and the eveneing then have to worry about taping.
But I would buy a ticket for anyone that wanted to tape and I would assist with the gear if not lend the gear.

...then again it would be fitting to put its first hour on it at the screening.

Hey all,

The HORROR FEST screening can be called a resounding success. We had a good crowd, as you can see from the pic below.

However, we did not take any video, as everyone involved kind of just wanted to relax and have a good time. Maybe for the next fest, we'll start planning earlier, get some more DVXers there, etc. What I would love to do next time is plan a webcast in enough time to pull it off, so that people can tune into the screening Q&A, etc. on the site.

I MC'd, asked some trivia questions about the films and handed out some DVXUser T-shirts and swag, courtesy of Jarred. When it came Q&A time, I took a vote from the audience, and it was pretty clear no one wanted to sit through Q&A. I know I never do. So I didn't make anyone and we by-passed the Q&A. I told people they could come to the bar and talk to us.

That being said, the films all looked really great on the screen, and the audience really had a great, great time. People were telling me on the way out how much they liked the movies.

DVXUsers in attendence:
Me
Jack
JimTheJib - and his mom
TimurCivan - and his mom
Aram
Texture
Lingothree and conrad_johnson, who flew in from Minn.
And someone said KORAVARA was going to be there, as he was in NYC this weekend, but either he could not make it, or did not reveal himself.

Did I miss anyone?

http://www.dvxuser6.com/uploaded/2939/1162225952.jpg

I have some more pics of the crowd, but like I said, when it came to it, we mainly wanted to sit back, have a good time and enjoy the films.

As I said above, they all looked good on screen, which is a testament to the cameras and everyone's skills.

Was it a packed screening?

I did not see any crazy girl named Liz. I think we were pretty packed. The first two rows were empty, and as you can see from the pick there were some scattered empty seats about. But a very good crowd, I thought.

Your joint also got the most laughs during the super long credits which is why the trivia question came up. :)
I thought the image on most of the shorts didn't hold up too well, either adapter problems or plugins being used too much. Halfway, Dear Jane, and Meat were the only ones that didn't have a really soft image I thought. Msconce, your image looked the same both on the web and the screen. Had a feeling like it was hand painted and I thought it was nice. Dear Jane got the biggest applause from everyone. Over all I thought they all had good production value but watching them made me want to really think twice about using any adapters for anything substantial without a lot of testing on bigger screens.

the pachyderm was a nice touch, but jack, it was really overkill when we found out you had rented us the dancing girls, and they showed up with all the white powder. but i must say the hot air balloon ride at the end of the night was really the icing on the cake. thanks again for sending us home in your personal jet - security at the airport would have been a bitch otherwise!
