View Full Version : Congrats to JDS

Let me take a moment to say congrats to Jack Daniel Stanley. He's made four short films in his life, and has quite a track record:

His first film took 2nd place in our ZombieFest.
His second film took 2nd place in our Sci-Fest.
His third film took 1st place in our HeroFest.
And his fourth film took 1st place in our HorrorFest.

Quite a track record. As Hudson and some others have said, he's probably outgrown our six-minute festival.

I agree.

I've had my eye on JDS since "Shed"; for a first-timer to produce something like that was just amazing. To do so in the face of a hurricane that wiped out everything he owned is inspiring. And he hasn't slowed down, hasn't skipped a beat, just gotten better and refined his craft. His understanding of character and art direction and visual storytelling is first-rate. He goes full-bore even with no budget and no funds; the man cannot be stopped.

It's time to see what he can do in a longer form.

Which is why I'm pleased to announce that my company is signing Jack to direct a full-length low-budget feature film that we will be funding.

This contest provided the stiffest competition yet, and in some ways I was hoping someone else would win so it wouldn't be all-Jack all-the-time :) but the guy went and won again... so congratulations Jack, this is a big night, and it just got a bit bigger.

A large part of my relocation to NC was to establish a new business, and we hope to be involving DVXUser members along the way. David Jimerson is my business partner; we've just launched our first product (The HVX BootCamp DVD) and we have more products in development with a select group of DVXUser members. The talent and skill level on this board is amazing, and we're grateful to have a family like this to work with. Thank you all for your participation in the fests, and for the knowledge you all freely share with all of us every day. I've met some amazing people through this board. You never know who is watching, who is listening, and where it might lead. For Jack it just led to him getting his first full-length film project underway.

So, JDS, once again, congrats. Take this night to celebrate, 'cause come Monday we have to get to work! :)

You know ... that is exactly how I feel.

Barry and David thank you so much, it's quite obviously a dream come true. If there's one person who is perhaps more elated than me its my girlfriend who HATES working on movies and producing, but does it anyway just because she's better than any man deserves. But this means, at least for the duration of this project, no more painting our living room or moving all of our stuff to the basement, etc.

So again many thanks Barry and David, but I also have to thank DVXuser. The members and mods here have kept me going and inspired me greatly.

And of course a very big thanks to Jarred as well. Thanks for the backyard and the support and ton more

Cheers all

I think you can easily quibble over the Horrorfest exact rankings, but you have to admit that Jack is very talented, dedicated to his craft and agressively pursuing his career in filmmaking. You can't argue that Jack won't put that HVX to good use and come up with some great stuff. Not to say there aren't some other incredibly talented filmmakers around here.

I'm looking forward to see this JDS/Barry Green joint and look for my cameo as a dismembered rotting corpse. :) My congratulations to Jack and Mark and the rest of his talented cast and crew.

how much money is on the project?

Jack Daniel Stanley
10-18-2006, 08:13 AM
Hard to say as yet since we are still looking at material.
Barry's mantra has been that "everyone is paid" however.

I do know it's a subject of interest since most of us think about budget and wonder what's the bare minimum it would take to self produce or that we would have to convice someone else to cough up. As director for hire, all I know is that it's less than Hellraiser or Reservoir Dogs (a million) and more than El Mariachi or Sex Machine (7k and 10k respectively).

...Sex Machine is another great looking indie feature out of Austin which was shot on the DVX http://www.sexmachinemovie.com/ but I don't think it's had wide festival release yet.

Herman Witkam

Congrats again, Jack!

Btw - IMDb-pro says that the total budget for El Mariachi is estimated $220K, but it also says that's "after post-production".

Jack Daniel Stanley
10-18-2006, 02:16 PM
Yah, after it was acquired for distribution it was blown up to 35mm and the sound was redone.

But film, much as it looks now when you rent it, was shot and completed for $7K and that was what was screened at Sundance that got them the blowup and distribution deal.

Same for Open Water, some recording and whatnot was done after festival release before distribution that would elevate its budget of 100K. Both films wear their low budgets as badges of honor and used them for festival buzz.

asphaltplanet
10-18-2006, 02:58 PM
Hey Congratulations and thanks for the comments about Sex Machine.

We actually made that for $8,016. We were trying to make it for $7K but we went over budget. We had no idea what we were doing, but overall I'm pretty proud of it.

That was quick. Do you have a feature that lets you know when others link to your site?

You should start a thread for your film here
http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/forumdisplay.php?f=96
It's the user's films subforum ... its free until you are selling DVD's and then its $20 per month. Your film helped inspire me to get started with the DVX, and I admire that you went out and just did it for 8K, so I will def. help you pimp it there in the user film section.

Also if you need help in sound or music, you should talk to Herman who scored Rekindled and scored and mixed the second place film Bloody Mary. Herman is the shiznit.

jeremytuttle
10-18-2006, 04:11 PM
Another ultra low-budget movie that I thought was great was one called Primer and was made for 7K. Granted the guy wrote, produced, directed, starred, shot, it and even did the music for it (kinda like TheaterGuy :) ) But it did a good festival run and you can get it on DVD so it was a success and definitely got the guy noticed.

Kholi
10-18-2006, 04:26 PM
Good Festival run?

Look at the DVD cover... It had the kind of Sundance run indie's dream of, and this guy comes out of nowhere.

Purchase the soundtrack on iTunes for 8.00. Shane Carruth did, in fact, compose it and it's got a real Jon Brion thick over it's tones: hauntingly optimistic, if I had to describe it.

Interesting tidbit: They had no room/time/money for reshooting scenes so most of those are one-takes on 16mm.

Obviously doesn't take a rocket scientist to make a good movie, but maybe a great engineer out of the mid-west?

Err... back on topic--

GO JACK!!! When do you guys tell us about the project?

asphaltplanet

Hey Jack - Thanks for the tips and I started a thread here, so as not to derail this one with my rambling...
http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?p=737853#post737853

I actually used to be really involved in these forums... a long time ago, probably up until we started making the movie and then I got so busy, my forum surfing time got cut way down. It's very cool to see how DVXUSER has expanded and evolved.

And yeah, i was checking my stats and noticed a bunch of visits from this thread so I decided to drop by and see what people were saying... hoping it wasn't anything too bad.

But yeah, we just decided it was now or never. We HAD to make it and we did.

Taubkin ... it's great to hear from you. I hope you enter Drama fest!

Brandon, We are just trying to nail down what we wanna shoot right now.

I don't wanna say what we have cooking yet because it might fall through.

We both wanna get through this stage and get into pre-production and production as soon as possible, but we both feel strongly that the script is probably our most important element.

We are trying a variety of approaches to get there though.

Thanks for the interest and I wish I had more exciting news for you.

Once we have the material locked down then we can start one of those user film threads I guess, like with a name and a log line and all! Woohoo! But that's a bit down the road for now

Will this be an hvx shoot, or a film shoot, or...

Jason

Jack Daniel Stanley
11-02-2006, 09:22 PM
Most likely HVX. Barry mentioned at some point that it could even be film if it had to be film, i.e., that would clearly serve the story better than H.D. or the concept was somehow wrapped up in film.

But 99.9% probably HVX unless Barry wants to step in and correct me on that.

But that is something I'm considering with the material, what media its best suited for / what media serves it (the story) best.

Jason Ramsey
11-02-2006, 09:36 PM
Cool. It'd be great if it was the HVX, just for... well obvious reasons, but your line after the / says it best.

it should only be shot with HVX if not RED because you need to make a statement about the indie spirit. how could most of us relate or support if it was shot on film? then it'd be like any other movie.... not that it should matter...

We're progressing ok. The finding a script / script development stage can be slow and methodical and directly relates to when you see a UserFilm thread for us.

Basically when we have a script that we are sure we are taking to production, then you will see a UserFilm thread from us. No guarantee, but could be by the New Year.

Hey Jack... where are you planning on shooting the film? In New York or where Barry is (North Carolina, correct?) - or ? Let me know if you're going to be auditioning actors in the Los Angeles area. I'd love to come audition! :)

Jack Daniel Stanley
12-16-2006, 10:02 PM
We were just discussing that today.

N.C. is a strong possibility but it could be anywhere.

If there's auditions in your area then you're on. But follow what we are up to and remind us you're interested if it turns out we are gonna be out there. I'll probably forget to follow up on my end, since that'll be a ways away and my brain is the size of a peanut.

Thanks for the interest

In dream world we'd be wrapped and shopping it in six months.

I think that's about as fast as it could happen.

Right now we are in a valuable but painstaking development process.

Once we get over that hurdle things can run on a set schedule (or so it seems to me) until we get to casting, and then again things may slow while we get it "just right".

As the experience producer Barry might know better, but it seems like the picking and developing the script takes as long as it takes, but then you hire technical and creative personnel based on their body of work for the work you want them to do, we're talking DP, Art Director, etc. But then once you get to casting again you have to take as long as it takes (within reason of course)

So we are couple of stages more away from setting a shooting date I think.

Casting is, arguably, the most important aspect of having a good finished product. I learned this the hard way with the short that I did (which was meant to compete in Horrorfest.) It was hard to direct because of the cast. But you have to learn that lesson somehow, I suppose...

Puh... I just clicked JDS's banner in his signature and after browsing his website I ended up here reading the 10 pages of this thread.

Holy cow. O_o

First of all: Congratulations JDS. Probably a little bit late :D

So I reached the end of this thread and found a situation where somebody ripped out the last bages of a good book. Obviously not satisfying :P

What happend to the project? This thread just died before Christmas last year. Is there a new thread? A thread about that project?

Best wishes
Simon

SCRIPT DEVELOPMENT.

That's what we've been up to. On one hand somewhat intensely, and on the other hand somewhat sporadicly as we have various other projects on the burner - projects that we like a great deal and that pay the rent, but I think for both of us, our hearts are very much in this thing ... even as slowly as it's coming along :)

Lemme check with Barry on something and maybe your post will be the impetus for a big update.

And thanks for the interest Simon.

So, any chance for the 'big update'?
I know I'm curious to hear how things are going ... and I'm sure I'm not the only one.

We are loving life here in our own little development hell. See, this happens when you get a producer involved who wants to make the project "better" (but seriously, I think it's getting lots better!) :)

There are lots of rumors, and some are more accurate than others. :) There will be announcements on this, but this may not be the first announcement in that thread.
