Barry S, do the honors.

I first wanna thank all our sponsors, Abel, Zacuto, Varizoom, Sony Media, Kholi And Micheal Long from Glideshot, Brandon, John and Barry S for helping out the logistics, and all you filmmakers for putting out some kick ass films this round.

oh... and I will painfully thank Me and Barry G, who hafta hand over Pete Abel a big ass check tomorrow for a HVX200 for lucky mr.. .....

Let's put things in perspective. Sixty-five of our TWENTY THOUSAND members actually made films. Granted, many of those twenty thousand are dead, living on tiny atolls, or institutionalized, but that's not the point. The point is every one of you that made a film, rocks. So you're all in the *top* 1% of our members. And that's pretty cool.

That cracked me up!

I've got to say I'm surprised by the results too. Don't get me wrong, I'm pleased as punch that we made top 10 (taking STRICKEN out due to Non-Compete), but there were SEVERAL films that I believed out performed ours on a number of levels, which didn't place as well, and one or two that hadn't scored so well on my sheet, yet placed higher than expected.

But, that's the beauty of differing opinions, tastes, thought processes, etc. You just never know how one film will appeal to one market or individual as compared to the next. It's been a fun fest to watch, and to be a part of! :dankk2:

Question, the overall score shows HALFWAY and MEAT tying for 3rd place. Am I reading that correctly? If so, how does HALFWAY get recognized over MEAT for 3rd? Just wondering what the tie breaker is, especially since MEAT rec'd 1st place for Screenplay?

BTW, if the mods are interested for the future contest, I'm sure I could score FINAL DRAFT or MOVIE MAGIC screenwriting software for the best screenplay next time. Just an idea.

yeah, I wondered that too. If you add them all up though and divide by 6, you'll see that HALFWAY was like a 100th higher in its score, although the one decimal point in the "total" of the spreadsheet doesn't show that.

Halfway = 7.283333...
MEAT = 7.26666...

Look at the cell values. The "7.3" is rounded off. Halfway is 7.29, Meat is 7.25.

Just a question I had while trying to look at everything, not really questioning it Jarred. I think EVERYONE is super excited to see the spread sheet, just like good ol' SciFest. Thanks for sharing it Jarred/Barry_S! :thumbups:

Jarred ... remind me when the next fest is announced, and I'll contact those companies. Maybe I'll start a poll about that time to see which software is the more preferred as well.

We were bitching and complaining as usual about stuff, over coffee at Waveryl Diner, when we finished, and went ou side for a smoke, some guy comes up to us (mark Me and JAck)and says, " are you filmamkers? , im Issac brody...." an we all hugged him. hes cool.

Haha I'm glad you posted that pic tonight.

I had to go out (happily) to attend Alex Depew's 30th birthday (he's the director of "memories") where I encountered several DVXusers, including Mark and Timur of 2nd place Bloody Mary.

Mark's 1st words to me were "let me be the 1st to say f@ck you" and then ge bought me a bud and a shot of jack :)

I don't know what to say except I am pleasantly surprised, and those who say I should have moved on long ago please note that I only won by 3/10ths of a point. I definitely felt Mark and Timur breathing down my neck this whole fest and had to pull out all the stops to barely nudge past them in the end. I think if we took another random sampling of DVXusers members it could easily come out with Bloody Mary on top or Broken Circle or Halfway or any other of the many excellent, excellent films this go around.

As such, it's an honor to even be mentioned with the top films here, and I express my deepest gratitude to DVXuser, the film making community that has given me the closest thing to formal training that I've had and a place to learn and grow and make and share movies and so much more than an HVX already. THank you thank you thank you.

Thanks for making it a great fest to all mods and members, you have been an inspiration to me.

I think I'm probably (never say never) going to retirement from DVXuser Fest at this point. It would, however, be my greatest honor to participate by assisting in future fests.

Thanks once again all.

Ha ha, that was awesome to run into Issac!!!!!! Yeah ... here's my account

...Timur and Mark and I standing outside of the Waverly Diner in the West Village at about 330 AM, when up walks a handsome and solidly built young black dood ...
"Excuse me are you filmmakers" asks he.
"uhm ... yes ... uh ... why" sayeth I.
"What's your name?"
"Jack ..."
"I'm Isaac Brody," he replied.
"WHOAAAAAAA!" screamed Timur and Mark and I in unison as I thew my arms around him and exchanged a back slapping guy hug.

We told him that I'd nabbed 1st and that Mark and Timur had garnered 2nd and he gave us hearty congrats. What a thrill to meat such a respected Mod completely randomly out and about in NYC. I've always had such great respect for Isaac and to run into him tonight of all nights and meet him for the first time in person was just effin' great

Hey Hey

Jack - what did I tell you! you worry too much :-)

Mark and Timur! you deserve it! wow - I seriously mean that.

Over the course of this Fest I feel like some people have really included me in the group. Jack, Mark and Timur are a few of those. 2 weeks ago I didn't know who Jack or any of these people were, and I've been welcomed with open arms - very sweet!

I really mean it when I say Im thrilled for you Jack. Ive got to know you a little over the last few days and you come across as a very genuine and kind man, who absoutely loves the work he does. Mark and Timur, you've been far too complementary about my film and are a right good laf too.

On top of that it's an honour to be placed along side your films in this festival, you all know how highly I thought of them.

Thanks to Barry, Jarred, and all the moderators for putting on what I believe to be the most exciting festival I've entered. Ive said it before but without this fest my film would not have been made.... A big thankyou also to the support of everyone in this community. (well, most of you....lol).

Jack, the film contract Im sure is just the start for you. I hope you keep us all informed of it's progress. Timur, I'll make a special plate of milk for you, Mark - shut your (man)hole.

congrats once again!.... let me just say if I see any of you in public I will kill you all.

Thanks Norm.

Im thrilled with our placing. There really isnt much in it. We came second in VFX and second in editing 7.9 v 7.8..... so Im thrilled. ( and second in sound Ive just noticed!)....wow. But the top 2 winners deserved it. The right films came 1st and second.

The amount of detail in both Re-kindled and Bloody Mary was way ahead of my submission. My intent was just to make something atmospheric and to make something you guys would find scary. It looks like we succeeded on some of those accounts, so I couldnt be happier.

thanks to everyone for their support and for voting!

Jarred - I think with the removal of special effects you will see a plethora of
stories coming out of the whazoo. Story driven films will be fun to watch, looking
forward to it.

Mark Johnson

Jarred - I think with the removal of special effects

Hey! Let's not ban VFX!!! (the VFX guys whines) Good effects are those that both advance the story and which don't call attention to themselves. I think what Jarred is saying is that the "offbeat" themes (zombies, sci-fi, horror) are what have suppressed the attention to story. Frankly, I am hoping the next fest will be simply DRAMA so the writers here can show their stuff.

Inexistence
10-15-2006, 09:40 AM
First, Congrats to everyone! It's been an exciting first time experience here and I
can't wait for the next one! I'm with Mark on the effects cat. Stealth effects are
the best and since the ballot is already skewed towards skillset why remove it?

Just add an Overall and Originality slot to even out the ballot.

Congratulations everyone, and thank you for a wonderful fest. Looking forward to the next one.

Barry_Green

Nobody's saying you can't use VFX, just that we've had ZombieFest, Sci-Fest, Hero-Fest and HorrorFest, all heavily dependent on VFX. So opening it up to stories that don't necessarily rely on someone's VFX skills will help us do two things:
1) brings in more potential films from filmmakers who aren't VFX wizards, and
2) focuses more on story than effects, so hopefully all the entrants can grow their storytelling skills too.

VersuS
10-15-2006, 01:20 PM
IMHO storytelling is not something that you do only in drama or comedy coz I think this is where we're headed. I think that there's been some misunderstanding between screenplay and story in this fest ( i dont know about the previous, wasnt there).

I think almost all of the entries had a story to tell. But some failed to do so properly in various ways. But a story was there.

So I guess that you could put the same people, rewrite their shorts and that would help them improve their screenplay skills. Its not a matter of vfx-based themes or not. And if some people can't cope with screenplay then having them to make a drama or a comedy wont mean they ll be able to do so just because its a comedy or a drama. They ll still have a story to tell but the point is to learn how to tell the story and that is screenplay since we re talking about movies not books.

I know for example where both my entries lacked in terms of screenplay but they both had a story to tell. Some got it, others missed it, and that's where I must focus.

Dont get me wrong, I love the drama/comedy challenge, but lets not make this a 'improve your writing skills' fest.

Jack Daniel Stanley
10-15-2006, 01:47 PM

Nobody's saying you can't use VFX, just that we've had ZombieFest, Sci-Fest, Hero-Fest and HorrorFest, all heavily dependent on VFX. So opening it up to stories that don't necessarily rely on someone's VFX skills will help us do two things:
1) brings in more potential films from filmmakers who aren't VFX wizards, and
2) focuses more on story than effects, so hopefully all the entrants can grow their storytelling skills too.

Agree 100%.

As an observer of these fests, there has been a useful improvement in certain areas - cinematography, sound, editing (through sharing info. and communication) IMHO. However, there hasn't been anywhere near that same improvement in storytelling, or freshness and originality. In other words, it's time the focus is brought back to the building blocks of storytelling.

Perhaps, Drama will accomplish this, primarily because it demands that focus.

Congrats to everyone who entered a film. It's been a cool fest...

Just my 3 pence.

Jack, what I meant with my last post was that I dont think a drama/comedy will make people improve theirs (mine as well) screenplay skills just because it's a comedy or drama. Because it's like we re not addressing the problem the right way. Its not the vfx or the horror/zombies/hero/sci-fi themes that work as a containment environment for people to sharpen their pencils. They could have done great screenplays with those (as IMHO you did, bloody mary did and so on...).

I just objected to the whole 'ok you need to grow as screenwriters, so do a drama' idea. Coz if people think that just by doing drama they improve their skills in screenplay writing is just wrong and that will lead to lots of drama or comedy entries that again have a story but most wont be able to follow it and depending on the genre laugh or cry.

Story is something people seem to struggle with, you guys are getting the actual production values pretty high. Next fest I think we are going to push it towards a story driven contest.. enough with the offbeat themes for a change.
Yes, yes, yes. Please pick drama. Give us effects challenged filmmakers a chance.

the VFX rating is kinda strange to me. Does this mean a film that doesnt have special effect will automatically be handicapped?

Jack Daniel Stanley
10-15-2006, 07:19 PM
No sir. For films without VFX you leave that column blank and that column is not averaged.

Now what's this I hear about a comedy fest?

Here's an idea... instead of giving the award that was suggested a few pages back for the best screenplay for the next fest, shouldn't it go to the worst screenplay?? That would be the one who benefits from it. :)

Software wouldn't help that...

Haha, well if you don't understand the elements of a screenplay (Microsoft Word) then you certainly won't know what it takes to put together a complete, whole, good screenplay. (Final Draft) -- A bad screenwriter learning a good program will surely benefit. However it's not like a beginner artist can create a Davinci as soon as he switches from pens and napkins to paintbrushes and canvases.

Congratulations J Dan !

Well deserved, in my not so humble opinion. All those nights working in the 70 year old dust and strawberry syrup were well spent indeed. The film was great and shows how much you have grown as a film maker and artist (because for most folks those are two totally different things).

I 've got your back on whatever you decide to do next. Thai food and beer is on me!

JDS,

You may want to look at IMDb, which lists all the festivals they recognize, with their end dates and website links.

Have you found anything that just lists horror film fests?the book Chris Gore's Ultimate Film Festival Survival Guide lists festivals by prestige, and then categories such as doc, short, student, digital, animation, international, underground,, sports, family, music, sci fi, fantasy, and more including horror.

he started filmthreat.com and I think some of that information is on there, but I haven't checked.

I obviously haven't battle tested this book, but it seems very good. I was however able to apply some of his festival survival tips even to Horror Fest and it made a huge difference in my experience even vs. Hero Fest.

Jack, Mark, Ted and everyone else with a finished project. In case you are not aware the most up to date, most legitimate festivals can be found on withoutabox.com (http://www.withoutabox.com/v2/). They update almost every day, and they do electronic submission for your paperwork and other materials. Plus you can filter down to find festivals that might fit your project.

Yeah, I've been to WAB, but I don't recall it being very easy to filter by festival type. Doing a search on Horror gives you...well, just about everything. And I know there are many Horror-specific fests out there....and the Withoutabox submission interface is a convoluted disaster, I think...

Sorry about that. I meant search more as in film lengths, submission cost, formats etc. Has been a while since I actually did any searches on there though.

I submitted my other short via withoutabox....

it has LOADS of horror only fests on there.

Mine was screened at :

chicago Horror film festival
Salem Horror film festival
Rhode Island horror film festival
Eerie Horror Film festival
Horror Fest UK
NYC Horror film festival
Shockerfest

some deadlines I missed were Shriekfest, Screamfest, Dead by Dawn (Uk)....

that was just the horror ones - there are more fests that will look at horror too. I had my film shown at a few that were more fantasy/sci-fi related.

hope that helps

Karl.

Hey guys! I know it's been a while since we've touched this thread, but I thought I'd tell you about a horror film fest up at Big Bear lake in Cali.

http://www.bigbearhorrorfilmfest.com/index.html

And.. since this thread is chalked full of horror fest entries, I thought it would be a great opportunity to showcase some of you guys' horror films. Entry fee is $20.00 for shorts, $50.0 for features. Deadline is Oct 1st.

Unfortunately, we can't submit the new "Darkness" dvxfest films. (no prior screening)

If this post is out of line or in the wrong place, I apologize. Just trying to get your films some more exposure.

Cheers and good luck!
