Hey peoples. I broke my leg.
Just kidding.
I think I reviewed every entry in the contest and I have to say that everyone put forth a great effort. So great that I regret to tell you all that I didn't vote for a single person. I think everyone deserves a prize for getting out there and doing what I wish I could do, and to that effect I have not cast a vote for any placement. This is my way of levelling the field.
I'd also like to add something about the reviews this fest around: seems as though the community is becoming a lot more accepting of honest reviews and opinions. Being open to honest criticism also opened my eyes, as a wanna-be, to things that I didn't notice. While I was concerned with one thing, another reviewer would chime in and show me something that I missed that could be improved upon. So, the effort as a whole offers great advice for creating a better product. I didn't see a lot of defensive stands from people, and I actually expected it. That shows a lot of maturity from the content creators on the boards and you all should be congratulated on that. So congrats!
Fest entries took, as a whole, a large step forward in content quality. I saw a lot of visual excellence in the majority of the entries. This fest's sound quality was actually pretty impressive. I remember not being able to really get into the earlier fest entries because of poor sound issues. But we had composers, foley artists, great mic's. It REALLY punched through on how the information floating around on DVXuser about getting the best image and sound has improved upon everyone.
I think the next step is to start collaborating with writers, as well. Just like we've gone and hunted for composers and VFX artists, I think that the next step is pairing up with awesome content writers so that the stories fit the visuals. Six minutes is a whole hell-of-a lot of time to slam the audience through the concrete, and the majority lacked in this department. I think that was an overall consensus with the reviewers. It's proof, by the reviewers and creators alike, that content is really king at a point where the DVX and HVX allows us to create great and totally acceptable visuals.
Overall, though, I'm mirroring what a lot of people have said already: they just keep getting better and better. I'm totally jealous of all of you!
If I didn't review your short, let me know how bad I suck for not doing so.
This has been my sort-of "how to create a great short" fest. I got to pluck goods, bads, and uglies (urinal cakes) from each short and really dig into why this worked and why that didn't work. Thanks a lot to everyone who exhibited.
Sorry I didn't vote!
P.S. Thanks to all the shout-outs from people about my reviews. I didn't do it because I wanted acknowledgement. I did it because you all deserved the review. And thanks to the SNEAK team for the 20.00 Amazon Gift Certificate. I had no idea I won it. =P You just bought my PRINCE OF DARKNESS DVD. Muahaha.
